ACHIEVEMENT NIGHT PROGRAM – 2010
“Community Spirit”
4-H ALUMNI
The 4-H Alumni Award is designed to recognize past 4-H
members who have returned to the program as a volunteer leader
to share the knowledge and experiences they received in the
program. This years’ recipient is Angelina Gonzalez, of the
Sherwood Forest 4-H Club.
FRIEND OF 4-H
The Friend of 4-H Award is given in recognition of support for the
youth and projects of the Solano County 4-H Youth Development
Program. This year’s recipient is characterized by a commitment
to patients, a dedication to excellent science, and a respect for
everyone’s individuality. This recipient has been making history
since its founding in 1976 with its work in biotechnology. Since
that time—over 34 years—many new pharmaceuticals have been
created and approved by the FDA for use in improving the health
and well being of people. This recipient calls Vacaville home and
its name is Genentech.
Why do we recognize Genentech as this year’s Friend? Because
they were at the forefront of supporting our new science initiative,
SET—which stands for SCIENCE-ENGINEERING AND
TECHNOLOGY. Genentech personnel volunteered to work along
side our new SET Teens at the opening event of the program at the
Vacaville Library last June. They encouraged our youth and
provided an opportunity to learn about the work of Genentech. So
in appreciation for their support we would like to recognize
Genentech as this year’s Friend of Solano County 4-H.
LEADER OF THE YEAR
The Leader of the Year Award honors a leader who exemplifies
what a good 4-H Leader is. The recipient will have his or her
name engraved on a perpetual plaque that is on display at the
UCCE office.
The Leader of the Year Award honors a 4-H leader who
exemplifies the qualities expected of an outstanding leader.
2
Those individuals who draw out the best in 4-H members through
their patience, project preparedness and dependability as well as
their capacity to engage older youth who serve as Jr. or Teen
Leaders—providing them a youth/adult relationship experience
built on equity and trust. This year’s recipient is highly regarded
for her teaching skills and has a thriving sheep project. She has
been a leader for 6 years and is very deserving of this award.
Please join me in recognizing Jill Simmons of Dixon Ridge 4-H
Club as Leader of the Year.
SET RECOGNITION
The 4-H Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) initiative for
youth brings science education to elementary school children
through trained teen educators, using curriculum developed by the
University of California.
We would like to honor the SET Teen TEAM members for their
active participation and leadership over the Summer of 2010 in the
Solano County 4-H SET Program, delivering science education to
children in Solano County.

STAR RANK AWARDS
Star rank awards are achieved through a 4-H member’s
involvement is club and county activities. To qualify for any of
the star ranks a member must attend at least 80% of both club and
project meetings held during the year. A member makes a plan of
the type of activities that he or she wants to be involved in and then
earns points for the activities in which he or she participates.
Some activities are mandatory for certain ranks. A Bronze Star
requires the completion of 5 items from the personal development
form, the Silver Star 6, and the Gold and Platinum Star 7.
Participation items range from attending 4-H events, to giving
prepared talks or serving on a club committee.

EMERALD STAR
The Emerald Star is an advanced leadership opportunity for 4-H
members 13 years or older, who already hold a Silver or Gold star
rank. It was established to provide the opportunity and the
initiative for members to serve their community or county. This
award helps teach leadership skills, extends knowledge of 4-H and
introduces new or expanded programs or projects into Solano
County 4-H.
Interested candidates must submit a plan of their project to be
carried out during the year. For example, Emerald Star candidates
can put on an original event or activity, produce a book or
6
pamphlet written and published by the member for a particular
group or the general public, and make a slide set or video on 4-H
related ideas, or another original idea.
This year we have one Emerald Star Recipient: Kristin Clark-
Webb of the Vaca Valley 4-H Club. Kristin developed a
PowerPoint presentation for Meat Goat Project members and

leaders.
CALIFORNIA STATE AMBASSADOR AWARD
Each year, outstanding 4-H youth members and adult volunteer
leaders of the California 4-H Youth Development Program are
selected to the statewide 4-H State Ambassador Program.
Selection is awarded based on demonstrated ability in citizenship,

CLUB CHARTER SEALS
Each year 4-H clubs are required to submit a club program
planning guide, which they plan to achieve throughout the year.
These goals are kept on file, and at the end of the year the club
evaluates the goals they set for themselves and what they were able
to achieve. These year-end results are submitted and reviewed by
the Incentive & Recognition Committee. The club is then scored
points for the number of goals, which they were able to complete
and are awarded seals of achievement.
This year we had five clubs in Solano County complete a 4-H plan
and submit required records by the county due date. Receiving
gold seals are the Sherwood Forest, Suisun Valley, Tremont, Vaca
Valley, and Westwind 4-H Clubs.

ALAN HAMEL CITIZENSHIP AWARD:
Citizenship is an important part of 4-H. This award is presented annually in memory of
Alan Hamel, a Dixon 4-H’er who died of Leukemia. Alan was a 4-H’er in the mid 50’s
and was selected an All Star in 1956. In order to receive this award, the member must
submit an original essay on what citizenship means to them.
This year’s winner has the following to say about citizenship…
The dictionary defines “citizenship” as “The position of being a citizen of a
country with all the rights, duties, and privileges that come with it.”
As an American I should be aware of, and fight for, my rights. One right I have is
freedom of speech and press. 4-H gives us opportunities to write news articles, and to
organize speeches based on what we believe. Another right is freedom of religion.
Through 4-H, we learn to accept and appreciate all people. You also have the right to
band together with others to petition for change. For instance, Solano County 4-H
lobbied to keep UCCE in the Solano County Budget.
Americans also have duties. You have the duty to care for your planet, help and
respect others, and perform community service based on your community’s needs. In
Solano County I began “Operation 4-HEROES”, based on a need for recognition of those
who serve our country. In doing service projects, I notice the butterfly effect. I not only
help someone directly, but have a positive affect on the people surrounding that
someone and myself. You have the duty to vote. You can ready yourself to vote by
learning about political issues, and practicing during Club Officer Elections.
Being an American is a privilege. It is important for citizens to use their rights to
change what they think is wrong and to follow through on their duties. 4-H teaches us
about our rights and duties, and how to become better citizens.
The recipient of the 2010 Alan Hamel Citizenship Award, Colleen Bohannan, Westwind
4-H Club.

PRESENTATION PROFICIENCY AWARD: This award is presented to 4-H members who give a presentation to five
different audiences in addition to entering their presentation at County
Presentation Day. The presentation project is an excellent program that

speaking to groups. It is also a requirement for the star ranks. This year’s
award winners are:
Elmira Caitlin Miller Roving Clovers Anna Moore Sherwood Forest Julianna Payne Suisun Valley Jessie Bast Preston Clayland Duke Delorefice Drake Delorefice Aubree Ellison Caitlin Estes Christin Estes Juliet Gemmell Meredith Gemmell Jacob Hall Isaac Hall Tiffany Lum Matt Rowland Emma Vogliano Anthony Vogliano Thomas Weisz Vaca Valley Isabella Berkheimer Elizabeth Bowen Lauren Bowen Kristin Clark-Webb Samantha DeOsuna Bryanna DeTomasi Hannah DeTomasi

LYNNE BURNS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Lynne Burns was the long time 4-H Club Program Representative
for Solano County in the mid 1980’s and early 1990’s. Lynne
developed cancer and after a long, hard fight she succumbed to the
disease. In honor of her memory Solano County 4-H Leaders
Council developed a scholarship in her name. This is the Tenth
year this scholarship has been offered to high school seniors.
Candidates must submit a completed application, their high school
transcripts with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and are
interviewed by a selection committee. This year there were four
recipients of the Lynne Burns Memorial 4-H Scholarship. Each
recipient was presented with a certificate at 4-H Senior
Recognition Night. We are very proud to have awarded four
scholarships. The recipients were Will Simmons, Dixon Ridge
4-H Club, Brady Baldwin, Molly Carlson & Jaime Picano,
Suisun Valley 4-H Club.
INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE RECOGNITION
4-H has been involved with international exchange programs since
1948. After World War II, the United States began many
exchange programs to create mutual understanding between people
of different cultures. This summer a Solano County 4-H member
participated in the outbound program and lived with a host family
in Costa Rica for several weeks. He was able to polish his Spanish
skills as his host family did not speak English. Tonight we
recognize Carson Wignall, Suisun Valley 4-H Club.
GOLDEN CLOVER
The Golden Clover Awards recognize outstanding achievement of
4-H Members, Volunteers, and Groups within the 4-H Youth
Development Program. 4-H members, volunteers, and groups may
be nominated or self-nominated in any applicable category.
23
Categories recognize 4-H work in multiple areas including
innovative ideas, outreach, fundraising, leadership, and lifetime
service. This year a Solano County 4-H member received this
prestigious award, William Simmons, Dixon Ridge 4-H Club,
for his contributions to Solano County Fair Ag Day.
LEADER YEAR AWARDS
There is no way to estimate the benefit boys and girls receive from
the volunteers in the 4-H program. As they grow into adults,
young people need models to imitate. Volunteers fill this need, as
well as contributing to young people in many other ways. Tonight
we give tenure awards to adult volunteers who have given so
selflessly of their time.
