Jackson’s Military Career Battle of New Orleans

• Fought with a hodgepodge of soldiers including loafers & pirates

• Pirate Jean Lafitte supplied gunpowder and flints for the muskets

Campaign Against the Seminoles

• President Monroe ordered Jackson to Florida because of many Seminole attacks

• Jackson disobeyed Monroe by following the Seminoles over the Florida border

• Jackson was made military governor of the Florida Territory

• Many of Jackson’s friends from Tennessee followed him to Washington to beg for jobs

• Jackson fired government employees and gave his friends their jobs

• The Spoils System is a bad way to operate government

goods helped Northern factories

• Hurt Southern farms by raising prices on goods

• Tariff became national law, but South Carolina passed state law overriding it
