Unique Self-Adjusting DesignSLIPFREE connectors offer a rugged and easyway to ensure good column connections. TheSLIPFREE connector design provides a void-free connection because it actually pushesthe tubing and ferrule into the end-fitting.The separate tube holding and connection-sealing functions provide a better connectionand better hardware lifetime. Because pres-sure is applied to the tubing rather than theferrule, when the SLIPFREE connector isremoved, the ferrule will not become lodgedin the end-fitting. The movable Vespel™ frontferrule allows the SLIPFREE connector toeasily adjust to any commercially availableHPLC or SFC column end-fitting. Used overand over again, the SLIPFREE connectorreadjusts to fit each new column connection.Even when different column brands are usedon a single HPLC system, SLIPRFREE connec-tors provide all the same benefits.

Choice of ConfigurationsThe SLIPFREE connector is available in bothsingle and double configurations. The doubleSLIPFREE is useful when frequent connec-tions and disconnections will be madebetween HPLC columns and injectors ordetectors. The single SLIPFREE connector isuseful when only the column is changed.SLIPFREE connectors are available in flexible1/32" OD tubing as well as standard 1/16"OD tubing, in various lengths. SLIPFREE connectors come in 0.010" ID for routinework, 0.005" ID for use with small-bore andmicrobore columns, and 0.020" ID for semipreparative and preparative connections, orfor connections ahead of the injector. PEEK-collared SLIPFREE connectors are ideal forhigher temperature applications such as SFC.Long-neck SLIPFREE connectors have anextra long nut on the end which allowsimproved reach into tight spaces. SLIPFREEconnectors come standard with Vespel ferrules.SLIPFREE sample loops are compatible withRheodyne™ and Valco™ injectors. Thermo offers stainless steel solvent inletfilters that have a large surface area for along lifetime.

These filters are easy to change with no tools required. Inlet solvent filters areavailable with stems to slip into the inlettubing, or with a fingertight nut. Bottom-of-the-Bottle inlet filters are made from 100%PEEK™ polymer, including two 2 µm frits. Theflat design draws virtually all the solventfrom the reservoir. A helium sparge port andfrit is built in for optional use. The press-fitdesign accepts 1/8" OD tubing. Nuts are alsoavailable for convenient fingertight fittings,complete with a replaceable PEEK ferrule.

PEEK™ tubing is designed to work in mostHPLC applications, particularly reversedphase with aqueous mobile phases. It is supplied in pre-cut lengths, but is easily cutto a desired length. PEEK tubing is availablein a range of internal diameters and can beused with standard fingertight fittings.

PEEK tubing is resistant to most organicsolvents. However, nitric acid, sulfuric acid,dichloromethane, THF and DMSO are not recommended.

PEEKsil™ fused silica lined PEEK™ tubing is manufactured using precision bore fused silica tubing coated with a 1/16" OD PEEK covering.The tubing can withstand high pressures,which makes it an ideal choice for capillaryHPLC and LC/MS. The tubing has a verysmooth internal surface for excellent flowcharacteristics, which leads to improvedreproducibility and resolution, and higherefficiency.

PEEKsil tubing is quite stiff and is difficult to bend without damaging the fusedsilica core. As such, it is not recommendedfor sections of the system where tubingbends are required. The tubing cannot be cutin the laboratory and is therefore limited topre-cut lengths only.

Stainless steel tubing is available in a rangeof precut lengths and ID’s. Each length oftubing has pre-finished, square, burr-freeends and interiors to ensure minimum dead volume connections. It is cleaned andpassivated and ready for immediate installa-tion. Stainless steel tubing is required forultra high pressure applications where plastic or hybrid tubing will not work.

Stainless steel tubing is reasonably flexible, but is best when bends are kept to a minimum. The tubing also has a roughinternal surface, which could lead to samplecarry-over. Stainless steel tubing is not recommended for biological samples .

The injection liners from Thermo are highlydeactivated, and produced to exacting toler-ances to ensure the high level of reproducibilityrequired in today’s separation laboratory. Afull range of liners is available for Thermoand other manufacturers’ instruments.

Thermo FocusLiner GC Injection LinerThe Thermo FocusLiner Injection liners contain a quartz wool filter that improves therate of vaporization, reducing the discrimina-tion of high boiling analytes in the sample. It also prevents non-volatile components fromentering the column, improving sensitivityand extending column lifetimes. The positionof this quartz wool is critical to obtain these

improvements. The FocusLiner secures the quartz wool between two restrictionspreventing movement during syringe needleinjection. The quartz wool consistently wipesthe dispensed liquid away from the end of

the syringe needle during the injectionprocess, resulting in less carryover andgreatly improved precision. With these liners, a Relative Standard Deviation (RSD)of less than 1% can be achieved.Please also see septa on page 154.

100% Graphite FerrulesThermo’s 100%graphite ferrules area soft material thatis porous to oxygen,making them suitablefor most applications

except GC/MS. These easy-to-use ferrulesform a soft grip with the column and providea stable seal.

15% Graphite/85% Vespel FerrulesThe mechanicallyrobust 15%Graphite /85%Vespel ferrules havea long lifetime andare compatible with

GC/MS. These ferrules form a strong gripwith the column and cannot be reused asthey form a permanent seal with the column.They have a temperature limit of 350 °C, but must be re-tightened after initial temperature cycles.

SilTite Metal FerrulesSilTite™ metal ferrulesand nuts are madefrom the same material and havethe same thermalexpansion coefficient.

The SilTite ferrule forms a strong, permanent,airtight seal around the capillary column,eliminating leaks. The base of the ferrule isflat and forms a perfect seal with the MSinterface. The ferrule’s temperature toleranceis well above the limit of the injector, MSinterface or GC oven. Unlike other ferrules,SilTite Ferrules do not need re-tighteningafter installation.Please also see syringes on page 158.

The accuracy and precision of the GC samplesyringe is critical to your GC results. Thermo’ssyringes are designed, manufactured andinspected to ensure the expected volume is transferred every time. Our syringes aremade by chromatographers who are familiarwith the requirements of the entire GC system, not just syringe manufacturing.

All Thermo syringes use borosilicateglass with metal flanges of either stainlesssteel or nickel-plated brass. Your syringechoices include fixed and removable needlesas well as standard and gas-tight plungersfor convenience. The needles and plungersare stainless steel; gas-tight plunger tips arePTFE. The table summarizes the specificationsof all available syringes.

Autosampler SyringesThermo is the source for all your GCautosampler syringes, no matter what GCyou use. Thermo offers a wide variety ofneedle tips including cone point which canhelp prevent the plunger binding with dirtysamples. The field proven syringe designsare optimized for septum piercing, and comein a range of volumes.

Manual SyringesThermo manual syringes come in industrystandard sizes, ensuring you of a consistentfit with your GC. The white scale backingmakes markings easy-to-read, improvingreproducibility, and the markings are resistantto solvents.
