Message from the CEO of Think Brick Australia

In2005,ThinkBrickdecidedtoembarkonasmallprojecttoengagesevenarchitectstodelivertheirvisionsofwhatabrickhomeofthefuturemightlooklike.

SincetheHorburyHuntcompetitionbegan,theAustraliandreamofbuildingasolid,maintenance-freehomehasflourishedwiththisaward,andarchitectshavecontinuedtohighlighttoconsumersandbuilderstheunlimitedpossibilitiesofbrickwhendesigningthefamilyhome.

Thewinnerofthiscategorywillreceivea$10,000cashprize.

In2016,wereceivedover300nominationsacrossallawardcategories.Wecontinuetobeinspiredbythebrickdesignsenteredintheawardseachyear.

Welookforwardtoseeinghowyourprojectshavetranscendedtheirclaybeginningstobecomeinspiredcreations.

Who is Think Brick Australia?

ThinkBrickAustraliarepresentsAustralia’sclaybrickandpavermanufacturers.Ourpurposeistoensureclaybrickisrecognisedasapre-eminentbuildingmaterialbyleadingarchitects,developers,buildersandpropertyowners.Wearecommittedtopromotingexemplarybuildingandlandscapedesignusingclaybrickandpavers.

Wecreatenationalcampaignstoinspiredesigners,buildersandconsumerstouseclaybrickasacontemporary,versatileandinspiringbuildingmaterial.

Weprovidetechnicalsupporttoarchitects,engineers,builders,developersandpropertyowners.

Weundertakeresearchtoimproveandpromotetheusabilityandenvironmentalcredentialsofourproductsandworkwithgovernmentandregulatorsclosely.Wealsosetandmonitorstandardsforourmembersandusersofourproducts.

Weprovideresourcesfortheindustryandassistwiththedevelopmentoftraininginitiativesforassociatedtrades.

The Australian Face Brick Market

Thebrickindustryisworth$2billionperannumtotheAustralianeconomyandemploysapproximately30,000peopleinthemanufactureandinstallationofitsproducts.

Annually,1.6billionbricksaremanufacturednationally.

Brickmanufacturerscontinuetoinvestinresearchanddevelopmenttoproduceproductsthathavewiderappealtodesignerswhilepromotingitsstatusasa“self-finishing”,long-lasting,andmaterialthatsatisfiesmanyenvironmentalconcernsinboththeshorttermandoverthelifeofthebuilding.

Competition overview

ThisawardwasinitiatedbytheHorburyHuntClubandbyrequestfromarchitectsanddesigners.Itspurposeistorewardinnovationandcraftsmanshipinbrickworkandrecognisesthecontributionofarchitects,builders,bricklayersandmanufacturersinthatprocess.

TheHorburyHuntAwardcategoriesincludecommercialandresidentialbuiltprojectsthatexemplifyoutstandingcraftsmanshipandinnovationthroughtheuseofclayfacebrickandpavers.

TheawardisnamedafterJohnHorburyHunt,arenownedarchitectwhocametoAustraliafromAmericain1863.HuntwasknownforintroducinghisdistinctiveandradicalarchitecturetoSydneyandruralNewSouthWales,includingStPeter’sCathedralinArmidale,andConventoftheSacredHeartandTivoliinRoseBay.

Nominatedprojectmustmeetthefollowingcriteria:

• CompletedsinceJanuary2015andlocatedinAustralia.

• Recycledandreusedbrickscanbeincludedinthiscategory.

• NotenteredintopreviousThinkBrickawards.

• Mustbeconstructedwith75%inclayfacebrickwork,oruseclaypavers.

• Mustexemplifyarchitecturalinnovation,collaborationbetweenprojectteam,andshowahighlevelofskillandcraftsmanship.

• Entrymustbesubmittedbytheclosingdateof28th April, 2017.

• Onlyentriesthataresubmittedinfullandonline through our websitewillbeaccepted.

• Aprojectmaybeenteredinmultiplecategories,providingthatprojectmeetsthecriteriaofthespecificcategoryasoutlinedbelow.EachprojectmayonlybeenteredonceinthesameHorburyHuntResidentialcategory.

Residential Category

ThefinalistsandwinnersoftheHorburyHuntResidentialcategory2017willbeannouncedandpresentedattheAwardsGalaDinner,whichwillbeheldinMelbourneonThursday, 10th August 2017.Allsubmissionswillreceiveaninvitationfortwoforeachpartyinvolvedinthesubmission.Additionalticketstoattendtheeventareavailableforpurchase.

TheAwardsGalaDinnerincorporatestheHorburyHuntResidential,HorburyHuntCommercial,KevinBorlandMasonry-CommercialandResidential,BruceMackenzieLandscape,andRobinDodsRoofTileExcellencecategories.

Post Competition Promotion

TheprojectswillbefeaturedontheThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliawebsites,socialmedia,publications,industrypresentations,roadshowsandTBA/CMAA/RTAAevents.

Media Demands

Participantsshouldbepreparedtomakethemselvesavailableforallmediaandpublicityrequestsontheirsubmittedprojects,includingbutnotlimitedtophone,emailorface-to-faceinterviewsforbroadcast,online,socialmedia,orprintpublication.

Terms and conditions Photographssubmittedaspartofthisnominationmaybeexhibited,publishedandusedinavarietyofmarketingactivitiesandplatforms,inthepromotionoftheAwardsandotherrelatedinitiatives.Andalso,asacasestudyontheThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliawebsites,socialmediachannelsandotherthirdpartymedia.

ThewinningprojectandanyreceivingcommendationswillalsobepublishedinThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustralia’spublications.

AllbuildingproductsusedinthesubmittedentriesmustcomplywiththeBuildingCodeofAustraliaandrelevantAustralianstandardsasmandatedbylegislation.Ifnecessary,participantswillbeaskedtodemonstrateproofofcompliance.

ThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliarespectyourprivacyandwillnotshareyourcontactinformationwithanythirdparty.

Assessment

Jury

AjuryconsistingofeminentarchitectsandindustryprofessionalswillbeappointedbyThinkBrickAustraliatojudgethesubmissionsandannounceawinner.The2017jurywillbeannouncedontheThinkBrickAustraliawebsite.

Eachjurorwillberequiredtoacknowledgepersonalorprofessionalconnectionswithanyoftheparticipantsortheiremployees.Inthecaseofsuchconflicts,theCompetitionAdvisorwilloverseeatransparentprocesswherebytheseconflictsarealleviated.AtthediscretionoftheCompetitionAdvisor,jurorswillbeaskedtotakenopartintheassessmentofaffectedentries.Aphotographerwillalsobepresentduringthejudgingtodocumenttheevent.
