GM 1999-2007 Full-Size Trucks: Underbody Inspection and Brake Pipe Assembly Kits

While underbody inspections for rust and

corrosion should be a part of every vehicles

    regular maintenance schedule, these

inspections are absolutely essential to help

enable continued safe mechanical operation of

the vehicles braking system. In the winter, salt

and other chemicals used on road surfaces can

accumulate on the underbody, particularly on

brake pipes near the ABS modulator valve and

high-splash areas behind the wheels. These

chemicals can cause or accelerate corrosion on

the brake lines. Significant corrosion to brake lines may result in brake fluid leakage and reduced braking power.

All vehicles should undergo a thorough underbody inspection

after winter exposure to salt and other deicing chemicals. The

inspection should completely examine the vehicles brake lines

for any signs of corrosion, wear, or damageeven in difficult-to-inspect areas like around line hangars and clips, along the frame

rail behind the fuel tanks, and under the radiator. In addition

to a visual inspection, the technician should apply maximum

brake pedal pad force with the engine running, which can help

determine if a hydraulic line is weak or about to leak before a

    failure occurs on the road.

New Brake Pipe Assembly Kits Available For GM 1999-2007 GM Trucks And SuvsACDelco has complete brake pipe lines for 1999-

2007 full-size pickup trucks and SUVs, including

    Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban, Avalanche and

Tahoe; GMC Sierra and Yukon/Yukon Denali,

and Cadillac Escalade models. The kits can be

used any time the replacement of the entire

brake pipe assembly is required. All kits are pre-

formed and pre-flared for quicker installation.

The brake pipe kits have a nylon coating that

provides better corrosion protection, and they

are a lower-cost alternative to pipe replacement.

They are not intended for the repair of a single

damaged brake pipe, but the replacement of the

entire brake pipe assembly due to corrosion or

    wear.

Each kit is sold with all of the pipes needed to

replace the entire brake pipe system for the

vehicle except the rear axle crossover pipe. The

suggested time for this repair is 4.5-6.0 hours,

    depending on the vehicles configuration.

Before installation, be sure to identify the correct

port locations on the master cylinder, ABS

modulator valve, and brake pressure proportioning

valve, where equipped, to ensure proper operation.

Once the new brake pipes are installed, inspect the

routing of the new pipes to ensure that the pipes

do not contact any part of the frame, body or any

    chassis components.

Use existing clips (old and new lines shown).

    Kit Installation Procedure

    Technical Service Bulletin

    #13-05-22-001D details

    the procedures for installing

    these kits. ACDelco Bulletin

    #14D-101 includes a part

    number listing for each

    application. TSB 13-05-22-

    001D is available at

    www.acdelcotechconnect.

com in the Brakes area of the

    Product Support tab at the

    top of the home page.

When removing the old brake pipes, be sure to clean all dirt, rust or other

contaminants from the areas adjacent to each brake pipe tube nut so that no

contaminants enter any hydraulic fittings or openings of the brake pipes.

Also carefully remove the existing brake pipes from the routing clips to avoid

damaging the clips. The new brake pipes will be installed into the existing clips.

Be sure to identify the correct port locations on the brake pressure modulator valve.

    PRODUCTS

ACDelco Provides Limited Lifetime Warranty for Radiators

ACDelco will provide a Limited Lifetime Warranty on

radiators sold to the original retail purchaser (WD Bulletin

14D-130). The policy went into effect on Jan. 1, 2015. This

is a great competitive advantage for ACDelco, because many

competitors only offer a one- or two-year warranty.

Advise your customers to retain their receipt

during the warranty period and return to

your shop if they have a problem with the

    radiator. Your ACDelco representative or

distributor will have more details. Ask them!

    ACDelco decades later.

    THE PART THAT BUILT ME

    Mbies Story

    Mbie Carroll found her dream

job and the key to her future

    working as an automotive

    service advisor at Caseys Tire

    and Auto in Greensboro, N.C.

    Getting there was another story,

    what with school, work and

raising a child. At some point,

said Carroll, I decided I needed

to be my own role model.

ACDelco Quick Reference Guide For GDS2 Diagnostics

Take a Shot Promotion Kicks off Feb. 2

    A single-page, quick reference has

    been published to support technicians

running diagnostics on GM vehicles. It

    is available at www.gmgds2.com.

The guide can be used to determine

when to use the Tech2 diagnostic

scan tool (for older GM vehicles) and

when to use the Global Diagnostic

    System 2 (GDS2) the latest PC-based

    diagnostic software and an MDI/VCI

tool. Technicians should feel free to bookmark

this link or print the guide and keep it as a quick

    reference.

The transition of diagnostic scan tools from

the Tech2 to GDS2 requires technicians to

    understand which technology and device

to connect to each GM vehicle. This may be

especially tricky during the transition model

years between 2010 and 2013, when some

vehicles required the Tech2 diagnostic scan

tool and others required GDS2 and an MDI/

VCI tool. GM North American Tech2 software

updates concluded in the 2013 model year.

For 2014, all North American vehicles are

    supported with GDS2.

If a technician uses the wrong tool on a vehicle,

it could result in a no communication error

message, an inaccurate reading or the device

may not return any useful data, so knowing the

correct software and device to use will save

    time.

Squeak, Squeal and Moan Brake Noise Seminar Noise is the most common answer from customers when asked

today about their top brake issues. That wasnt always the case,

but these days all parts require correct lubrication prior to

installation, while lighter vehicle designs can reveal audible and

physical symptoms that are heard or felt on new vehicles.

The new ACDelco brake system seminar Brake Service Tips:

Squeak, Squeal, Moan, Give Me a Brake (S-BK05-07.01SEM)

covers the top brake issues seen in many aftermarket shops.

The seminar offers technical solutions and covers the latest

    technology and service procedures.

    Topics include:

    Brake system technology

Causes and corrections of brake noise

Causes and correction/prevention of brake pulsations

Causes of brake dust and excessive wear and the prevention

of excessive wear and reduction in brake dust

Causes and corrections of poor stopping performance

Benefits of Original Equipment, DuraStop and Advantage brake components

Anti-lock brake system operation and diagnosis

    Trailer brake operation and diagnosis.

The seminar presents several case studies that provide a descriptive investigation of several issues,

along with the details needed to determine the fundamental reasons for a cause and correction.

    Brake Noise

The many causes of brake noise friction, poor wear, interior

replacement parts, improper lubrication and the related

components are highlighted in the seminar.

Proper lubrication of the metal-to-metal contact points and the

caliper slides or pins is crucial to noise-free performance. The

lubricant helps prevent corrosion of the metal surfaces that could

prevent the brake pad or caliper from moving when the brakes

are applied and released and it acts as a dampening material

absorbing vibrations in the brake pad and caliper hardware. Only

use silicone or synthetic brake lubricant, such as ACDelco Silicone

    Brake Lubricant.

    Another feature many

    manufacturers are

    beginning to use to

    address brake noise is

    is low-frequency

    dampeners. They

    help overcome low-

    frequency noise such as

    moans and squeals from

    rear calipers. They are

    attached to the ends of

the caliper bolt. Lubricate the pad abutment and clips.

  • 7Jan - Feb 2015

    Brake Performance

Thickness variation in the rotor is the most common reason

for brake pulsations. Lateral run out (LRO) or warping

causes the rotor to contact the pads when the brakes are

released, which wears the rotors at the high spots and

    results in thinning the rotor.

In the seminar, the causes of lateral run out the side-

to-side motion of the rotor as it turns on the hub are

reviewed. They include improper wheel nut torqueing,

excessive hub run out and improper repair and refinishing procedures.

When refinishing brake rotors, first verify that the minimum thickness specification on the rotor meets the spec in the appropriate Service Information. Replace the rotors if they

do not meet the minimum thickness specification. Also verify the lathe equipment is properly calibrated.

After completing the refinishing, make sure the brake rotors are thoroughly cleaned. Brake squeal or other noises

may occur if residual iron particles are present on the brake

    rotor.

The seminar also covers the operation of many brake

systems and components, such as anti-lock brakes and

electronic stability control, and how to diagnosis concerns

    with these systems.

In diagnosing active wheel speed sensors, for example, the

amperage output of the wheel speed sensor is measured

using a fused jumper between the harness and the sensor.

With a Digital Multimeter (DMM) installed between the

low reference circuit of the harness and the sensor, a

measurement can be taken while turning the wheel and

comparing it to the manufacturers specifications.

Use a DMM to measure wheel speed sensor amperage output.

    PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

GM OE Fuel Pumps: Imitated, But Never EqualedNot all aftermarket parts are created equal, and ACDelco has the video to

prove it. We recently compared a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche fuel pump (part

number MU1738) to a known aftermarket competitors fuel pump and the

results underscore the superior performance of the ACDelco fuel pump.

Go to acdelcotechconnect.com to see the video. Click on the Product Support

button and scroll down to the Product Videos section. Youll find it in the A8-Engine Performance section along with other great, informative videos.

Heres how the ACDelco GM OE fuel pump stacks up against the aftermarket

    competition:

Armature: The ACDelco fuel pump has 10 motor contact points; the com-petitors has eight. Also, the ACDelco armature has witness marks from full

end-of-line testing vs. none on the competitors armature.

Fuel level sensor: The ACDelco fuel level sensor wiper contacts and wear pads are much thicker than the competitors. Thick wiper contacts and wear

pads improve durability, especially with todays ethanol fuels.

    Fuel reservoir: ACDelcos fuel

    reservoir is

    shorter than

    the competi-

    tors, and con-

    tains internal

    springs vs. the

    competitors ex-

    ternal springs. A

    shorter reser-

    voir reduces the

    risk of pinched

    fuel lines, and

    internal springs

    eliminate the

    risk of pinching

    wires and re-

    duce potential

    rub-through of

    the fuel line.

    Theyre all great

    reasons you

    should choose

    OE parts from

    ACDelco and

    recommend

    them to your

    customers.

    TECH TIPS

The vehicle may have reduced acceleration at low speed and/or the

transmission may be slipping from a launch. DTC P0751 (Shift Solenoid

Valve 1 Performance) may be set or stored in history. The reduced

acceleration or slipping condition may be caused by the Clutch

Select Solenoid Valve 2, located in the lower valve body, sticking

in its bore, which results in a 4th gear start. This condition may be

    difficult to duplicate.

The vehicle may not crank intermittently due to a dead battery. There is the potential for the HVAC

afterblow function to cause an intermittent battery draw. In addition, there may also be an HVAC odor.

If all other vehicle systems and components cannot be identified as the cause for the battery drain, check if the afterblow function is enabled. If it is, reprogram the HVAC control module with the latest

    calibration available in TIS2Web.

A battery draw that results in a no start condition may be caused

by an aftermarket product or improperly installed accessories

wired into circuit 1732 for the courtesy lamps.

If the Service Engine Soon lamp is on, or the battery is going dead

overnight, check for a 4.1 amp draw on the electrical system. The

draw may be steady or may drop to a low milliamp reading for a

second or two and then rise back to near 4.1 amps.

If any aftermarket accessories are installed into the courtesy

lamp circuit, the inadvertent power timer in the BCM may

continuously reset. If this occurs, the BCM may remain awake,

    causing an excessive battery drain.

If this condition is found, back out pin 1 of connector 2 at the

BCM. If the draw goes away with the pin out, check for an

aftermarket accessory, such as an alarm or non-factory DVD

system, that is improperly wired into circuit 1732.

Verify the transmission fluid level and condition are correct. Follow the appropriate Service Information diagnostics for DTC P0751:

When performing the solenoid performance test only PC Solenoid 2 will cause this condition

the recommended shop air pressure is 620.5690.4 Kpa (90100 psi). Higher pressure will give

    inaccurate results.

During inspection of the Clutch Select Solenoid Valve 2, the valve may or may not be stuck in the

bore due to the valve body bolts being loosened. Remove the valve and inspect it for any scratches.

If the valve is stuck in the bore or shows signs of scratching or damage, the lower valve body should

    be replaced.

In another effort to support the aftermarket service professionals

who diagnose and program GM vehicles, ACDelco has updated

several technical user guides. They have been significantly revamped to align with independent aftermarket repair shops.

The new user guides are highly recommended for service

professionals who use the Web-based Techline Information

System (TIS) and GM Service Information (GMSi). The guides

offer the most relevant information and cover key areas critical to

    an efficient, successful vehicle repair.

From essential system requirements (necessary for successfully

using ACDelco software applications) to important navigation

and procedure information, the user guides are an important

resource for service technicians. The documents are easy to

follow, feature key screen prints, and provide helpful images and

illustrations. Each guide also offers important tips and areas of

    caution to assist subscribers.

ACDelco customers using TIS2Web and GMSi software

applications can increase their productivity and gain a

competitive edge over those that outsource the work and

technicians who didnt think they had the time to program control

modules will realize the simplicity and value in the investment.

    GMSi subscriptions include:

GM Vehicle Diagnostic, Service (1998 present)

    Collision Repair Manuals (1998 present)

Campaigns, service bulletins and preliminary information for

    GM (1980 present)

GM Owners Manuals and glove box supplements (2003

    present)

    Easy-to-use keyword/document/number search

TIS2Web Subscriptions may include (depending on subscription

    level):

    GM Service Information (GMSi)

    Tech2 Diagnostic Software

    Global Diagnostic System 2 (GDS2)*

OnStar Gen 10 Hits The Hotspot Faster service and an available Wi-Fi hotspot

are just two of the advantages of the new

OnStar Generation 10 system available in

many 2015 GM cars and light-duty trucks. The

OnStar Gen 10 system uses Global System for

    Mobile Communication (GSM) to communicate

data and voice signals over the national cellular

    network. The Telematics Communication and

Interface Control Module in the vehicle also

has the ability to act as a Wireless Local Area

Network (WLAN) Wi-Fi hotspot similar to a

    household wireless router.

    The Telematics Communication and Interface

Control Module houses an internal WLAN

    antenna enabling hotspot connectivity

and streaming of high-speed media to the

entertainment system. The module is capable

of up to 4G LTE speeds (4G is the fourth

    generation of mobile telecommunications

technology, and LTE, or Long-Term Evolution,

is a standard for wireless communication of

high-speed data) and houses two technology

systems: one to process Global Positioning

System (GPS) data and another for cellular

information. The module sends and receives

all cellular communications over two cellular

antennas and cellular antenna coax cables.

    Wi-Fi Hotspot

    The Telematics Communication Interface

Control Module acts as a Wi-Fi hotspot router

and provides direct 4G LTE connectivity to

the Internet. It has the ability to connect up to

    seven compatible mobile devices (smartphones,

tablets and laptops) at one time. Devices

must be WPA2 compliant. Consult the device

    manufacturer for information regarding the

WPA2 security protocol and Wi-Fi device

    compatibility.

An OnStar data plan is required to use the

vehicles Wi-Fi hotspot. Initially, new vehicle

    customers receive a three-month or 3GB

(whichever comes first) trial data plan with the purchase of an eligible 2015 vehicle.

The system uses a secure auto connect feature

    between the Telematics Communication

Interface Control Module and the radio/Human

Machine Interface (HMI). It is always available

and ready to connect to a dedicated in-vehicle

device. The ignition must be in Run, Accessory

or Retained Accessory Power for Wi-Fi to

operate. Outside the vehicle, the Wi-Fi hotspot

has a range of 50 feet (15 meters).

The coverage for the in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot

depends on the wireless carrier network

coverage. When driving in areas where

coverage fluctuates, performance may be impacted. In a 2G-coverage area, the Wi-Fi

hotspot will not work. In a 3G-coverage area,

streaming data or video to mobile devices may

result in the degradation of service. Coverage

    maps are available at onstar.com.

    CONNECTING TO WI-FI

When the OnStar data plan is

    activated, a security default

    password is established for the

    Wi-Fi connection. There are

several ways to change the SSID

    or password, including by placing

a call to the OnStar Call Center,

using the Gen 10 mobile app or

    through a scan tool.

    To connect to the Wi-Fi

hotspot, users need to start a

    Wi-Fi network search on the

    mobile device, select the vehicle

    hotspot listed, and then enter

    the password when prompted.

The SSID is the name of the Wi-

Fi hotspot for the vehicle, which

is used to identify which Wi-Fi

    hotspot a user connects to.

To retrieve the SSID and pass-

word for the hotspot, press the

    OnStar Voice Command button

on the overhead console or rear-

view mirror, wait for the prompt,

    and then say Wi-Fi settings.

    The information will be displayed

    on the infotainment screen.

    Users who need assistance to

    change the SSID and password

can press the blue OnStar but-

    ton or call 888-4-ONSTAR to

    connect to an OnStar Advisor.

    FAST FACT

    ACDelco AGM (Absorbed Glass

    Mat) batteries are virtually spill-

    proof and leak-proof. They also

    require fewer charges and last

    longer. In fact, ACDelco AGM

    batteries hold their charge up

    to 3X longer than conventional

    batteries.

    CONNECTION Enhancements Improve Usability

At ACDelco, we want to be your first choice when you order auto parts. Thats why, when we heard from CONNECTION users that

the new flyout navigation style was not user-friendly, we acted immediately.

Thanks to the Feedback button, users notified us that the flyout navigation intended to save clicks was causing challenges. We

also heard similar comments from the ACDelco PSC Committee

members. To fix the issue, a user focus group met with our vendor and the issues were resolved.

CONNECTION now has the traditional dropdown style menu

that users find easier to use. Another improvement is access to three types of training: Technical Training, Product Videos, and

CONNECTION Training. You can find all of the training under Tools>ACDelco Support and Help.

CONNECTION Training provides you access to new videos on

the new features and benefits of the tool, as well as the Quick Reference Guides. ACDelco Product Videos highlight the

attributes of ACDelco parts, and Technical Training link directly
