Introduction
The goal of the UW Potato Breeding Program is
to develop potato cultivars that are genetically superior and that satisfy or exceed the standard for yield and grade in the fresh market and processing market
Short Storage Chipping Lines (An option to replace
Atlantic) Atlantic (Webb, 1978) has been an excellent off-
the field variety due to its high yield and specific gravity and general adaptation. Main defects are internal defects i.e. internal heat necrosis and hollow heart and black spot bruise and common scab susceptibility. No able to store as chip-stock
Short Storage Chipping Breeding
Objectives
Reliable Short Storage
High tuber yield ≥ Atlantic
High adaptation across potato regions
Consistent specific gravity similar to Atlantic
or in the acceptable range.
Size grade
Reduced Internal Defects (i.e. HH, IHN-
South)
Disease Resistance Atlantic has some tolerates Verticillium
wilt, early blight, and it is moderately susceptible to common scab.
Challenges in Finding a Short Storage variety to replace Atlantic
Accumulator (W2324-1) Pedigree: Snowden x S438
Yield potential > Atlantic and gravity is between Atlantic and Snowden
Produces good chip quality off the field and in short storage (0-3 months)
Low glycoalkaloid content, much lower than Snowden
Accumulator (W2324-1) Pedigree: Snowden x S438
Yield potential: Accumulator has scored record yields in experiments and on-farm trials in WI and Southern states, usually ≥20% over Atlantic

• High yield of Accumulator can be explained by the large number of tubers per plant • This larger number of tubers just like Snowden can use additional time for bulking late in the season
WI Specific Gravity: Accumulator (W2324-1) vs.
Atlantic (8 years)
Specific Gravity (8 WI trials): Atlantic>Accumulator> Snowden
Tuber Yield in the US-Northern States
North Central 2006 Yield (cwt/a) Accumulator (W2324-1) vs.
Atlantic
North Central 2007 Yield (cwt/a) Accumulator (W2324-1) vs.
Snowden
USPB/SFA Trial: Yield (cwt/a) Accumulator (W2324-1) vs.
Atlantic and SnowdenUS-North
Accumulator: Ability of chips to have good color after short storage better than Atlantic
Is Accumulator (W2324-1) an Option for the US South?
• Yield• Specific Gravity• Internal Heat Necrosis• Chip color
USPB/SFA Trial: Yield (cwt/a) Accumulator (W2324-1) vs.
SnowdenUS-South
USPB/SFA Trial: Yield (cwt/a) Accumulator (W2324-1) vs.
SnowdenUS-South
Accumulator tolerates IHN much better than Atlantic but can be affected under
extreme heat stress (i.e. NC 2010)
2011
Fry Color off the Field (1-5 Scale, 1 best): Accumulator vs. Atlantic
Fry Color off the Field (Agtron values, larger is better): Accumulator vs.
Atlantic
SFA Missouri
Limitations of Accumulator:
• Deep eyes• More susceptible to common scab• Manage (Avoid) risk High reward
Accumulator
Atlantic
Trait Accumulator (W2324-1)
Yield Higher than Atlantic (≥20%)
Specific Gravity Atlantic>Accumulator>Snowden
Tuber Internal Quality
HH: very low to 0%, IHN: Much better
Tuber Development Continues to bulk after Atlantic is done bulking
Short Storage Ability Accumulator stored for three months may fey similar to Atlantic off the field
Vine Vigor Strong
Verticillium wilt Tolerant
Early Blight Some tolerance
Overall Benefits of Accumulator vs Atlantic
