L’EPEE 1839 – the premier clock manufacture in Switzerland For over 175 years, L'Epée has been at the forefront of watch and clock making. Today, it is the only specialised manufacture in Switzerland dedicated to making high-end clocks. L'Epée was founded in 1839, initially to make music box and watch components, by Auguste L’Epée who set up the business near Besançon, France. The L’Epée hallmark was that all parts were made entirely by hand. From 1850 onwards, the manufacture became a leading light in the production of ‘platform’ escapements, creating regulators especially for alarm clocks, table clocks and musical watches. By 1877, it was making 24,000 platform escapements annually. The manufacture became a well-known specialist owning a large number of patents on special escapements such as anti-knocking, auto-starting and constant-force escapements and the chief supplier of escapements to several celebrated watchmakers of the day. L'Epée has won a number of gold awards at International Exhibitions. During the 20th century, L'Epée owed much of its reputation to its superlative carriage clocks and, for many, L'Epée was the clock of the influential and powerful; it was also the gift of choice by French government officials to elite guests. In 1976 when the Concorde supersonic aircraft entered commercial service, L'Epée wall clocks were chosen to furnish the cabins, providing passengers with visual feedback of the time. In 1994, L'Epée showed its thirst for a challenge when it built the world's biggest clock with compensated pendulum, the Giant Regulator. At 2.2m high, it weighs 1.2 tons – the mechanical movement alone weighs 120kg – and required 2,800 man-hours of work. L'Epée is now based in Delémont in the Swiss Jura Mountains. Under the guidance of CEO Arnaud Nicolas, L’Epée 1839 has developed an exceptional table clock collection, encompassing a range of sophisticated classic carriage clocks, contemporary design clocks (Le Duel), avant-garde, minimalist clocks (La Tour) and futuristic technical high end design clock (Starfleet). L’Epée clocks feature complications including retrograde seconds, power reserve indicators, perpetual calendars, tourbillons and striking mechanisms – all designed and manufactured in-house. Ultra-long power reserves have become a signature of the brand as well as superlative fine finishing.

In 2014, to celebrate its 175th anniversary the brand has developed a timepiece that suggests many interrogations. It was time for the manufacture to come back to its history and origins by redeveloping an extraordinary escapement: A Tourbillon. A special Tourbillon had to be made and what a better collaboration than with Vincent Calabrese, a well known figure of the Horology world. The challenge for the teams was to create an exceptional timepiece. Thanks to the dimension, to the design, to the material, to the ideas of Vincent Calabrese and to the dexterity of L’Epée 1839 team, Two Hands was born. The most surprising complication, the tourbillon comes and takes place in the middle of this piece of art. It becomes flying, and stands proudly on the middle of the Turbine shape inspired design. The movement, designed by Vincent Calabrese, includes a double tourbillon. As the movement is rotating on the single axis carrying a fixed center-wheel, the movement is embedded on top of the minute hand, it fulfill the full definition of Abraham Louis Breguet’s Tourbillion. The escapement, fitted on the exterior part of the minute hand upon the extension of the escapement wheel pinion, operates in tourbillon with a period of 60 seconds. The tourbillon is flying as its mobile parts are fitted on bearing without upper-bridge. All of this to make Two Hands fly over gravity and explore the basics of the tourbillon. Say good bye to the biggest force applied on earth, and welcome perfection, a movement that cancels gravity effect. Two hands was fully crafted by L’Epée 1839, Switzerland's only remaining specialised high-end clock manufacture, founded in 1839. The highly visible, superlatively finished in-house movement boasts an exceptional power reserve of 40 days with only one small barrel.

Hours and minutes hands are as usual used to indicate time but here it is also the main plate for the Tourbillon. The details of the finishing parts of the movement can be fully appreciated by the naked eye. The Full concept of a Flying Tourbillion can be admire and also easily understood by everyone as none of the subtle parts are hidden. This clock therefore threats observers to a fascinating visual full animation display. Almost every component of the superlatively finished palladium (or gold, depending on the chosen configuration) treated brass movement is designed and manufactured at L’Epée’s Swiss manufacture. The gears and mainspring barrels are on full display thanks to the skeletonised “Aerospace Turbine” inspired design dial and to the minute’s hands showing all the parts of the regulation of the clocks. When conceiving The “Two hands” housing, CEO Arnaud Nicolas and Designer Christian Chabloz set out a new reference to where no clock manufacturer had gone before, manufacturing an exceptional timepiece with 35 Kg of titanium. And as this was not enough, the shape is round and enamel! Two hands is limited to 2 unique pieces ; one in massive Titanium Grade 5 and one in massive brass gold plated.

The Sphere “When KnowHow becomes art”: No better motto will fit what had been realized by the L’Epée team. With this housing, L’Epée’s team pushes forward the limit of a masterpiece. Several challenges had been solve to manufacture this exceptional housing. The First but not the least was, for the black and white configuration, to be able to manufacture a sphere resulting of 35 kg of massive Titanium. To push to the extreme the link between design and material, the raw material used to manufacture the housing is identical to the one used in Aerospace industry: Titanium Grade 5. A unique dressing was also designed and, to be able to machining it on top of the sphere, not less than 2 millions of computer lines made by a specialist, resulting in more than 50 hours of grounding on a 5 axes CNC machine, was required. As it is an anniversary piece, the link with the past had to be visible in the movement but also in the housing, so the choice of enamel was taken. This was the biggest challenges for the l’Epée team. The design of the housing is composed of 212 leaves and 167 characters. So, 379 pockets of different size, going form 0.38 mm2 for the smaller one to 780 mm2 for the biggest one, had to be enamel on a unique round surface. The sphere shape was a huge constrains but it was one of the key code for this anniversary piece. History is always a cycle and what a better representation than a perfect sphere! The base is also in Titanium and had to be as simple as possible. Everything is in top of it! The L’Epée team wanted to have a clock that the owner can enjoy and despite the weight it had to be easily handled. To ease the discovery, to align the dial opening to its desk or to enjoy it from its sofa, the owner can easily turn it; thanks to the free rotation on its pedestal.

The Dial A Contemporary guilloché dial plated with All -Black associated with curved arms reveals the back side of the movement. Nothing is hidden, everything is shown in this turbine like dial. 3 main-plates composed the movement. The first one and the second one have this wave shape that gives a sensation of movement to the clock. The last one is placed on the back of the movement to add some kind of deepness of infinity. The deepness of the space into which the movement is flying. The Vincent Calabrese and L’Epée 1839 Signatures are engraved respectively at 3h00 and 9h00 to underline the 3 and 9 of 1939, date of foundation of L’Epée. The 12 numbers are sun satined finish to highlight the dial contrast and to re-enforced the turning effect. Like in a vortex, everything seems to come out from the center.

The Flying Tourbillion A new generation of Tourbillion have been developed. This flying Tourbillon lays on top of the minute hand doing a revolution in 1 hour. The influences of gravity on the accuracy of the 40-days movement disappear over the continuous and mastered rotation of the escapement. This Tourbillon, signed by Vincent Calabrese, is a revolving system as the movement is rotating on the single axis carrying a fixed center wheel. The movement is a Double Tourbillon as the escapement is rotating within the minute hand, itself rotating in 60 minutes. The escapement, fitted on the exterior part of the minute hand upon the extension of the escape wheel pinion, operates in Tourbillon with a period of 60 seconds. This Tourbillon is flying as its mobile parts are fitted on bearing without upperbridge. To enhance the visibility and so the fascination of a Flying tourbillion, the team has decided to make the cage turning anti-clockwise in an atmosphere where everything is turning clockwise.

Vincent Calabrese Vincent Calabrese is recognized worldwide as a prodigious watchmaker. His original creations, from very different nature, are still more and more surprising. This is a man who loves to create, to assemble and overcome the challenges that comes to him with a touch of poesy and philosophy.

He is the famous guy that, in 1990, at the 62th Congress of the Swiss Chronomeric Society, shake the watch industry by stating and proving (with the first realization of Two hands) the difference between a Tourbillon and a Caroussel, between Breguet and Bonniksen realizations. Vincent Calabrese had expressed his wish to surprise again the watch industry . Through the L’Epée 1839 partnership, he has revisited his first idea of creating an exceptional timepiece visually aesthetic and mechanically interesting.

With over 35 years of experience, his Horological prowess creations are countless . Not to mention the Corum T-Bridge, the new extra flat tourbillon from Blancpain….and now this new flying tourbillon with L’Epée 1839. This is a man who loves transparency, beauty and purity of the mechanical movement.

L’Epée 1839 40-days Movement L’Epée 1839 has a long experience in 40 days movement. Nevertheless, this new movement has the particularity to only bear one Barrel and to place most of its wheels on top of the minute Hand. The wheels are driven in a continuous motion by the minute hand, while the barrel is attached to the dial of this masterpiece. “Developing a 40 days movement, with only one unique barrel, was the only way to reach the flying effect we wanted for the movement here” says Arnaud Nicolas.

It’s nothing new to see one of L’Epée 1839’s high-end, Swiss-made timepieces flying over the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound: L’Epée’s beautifully-crafted wall clocks were chosen to furnish Concorde cabins when the supersonic aircraft entered commercial service in 1976. Unfortunately Concorde is no more. However, thanks to the aero-horological design team at MB&F, there is now another supersonically-themed L’Epée clock, which will not only traverse the stratosphere, but explore deep space and beyond: Starfleet Machine! Starfleet Machine is engineered and crafted by L’Epée 1839, Switzerland's only remaining specialised high-end clock manufacture, founded in 1839. Starfleet Machine is an intergalactic spaceship-cum-table clock, featuring hours and minutes, double retrograde seconds and power reserve indicator. The highly visible, superlatively finished in-house movement boasts an exceptional power reserve of 40 days (you need a large fuel tank for long space voyages). Starfleet Machine has been designed by MB&F, the award-winning artistic and micro-engineering laboratory. Hours and minutes are indicated on the central black dome by hand-painted hands that follow the dome’s curved contours. Behind that, a smaller rotating dome, accompanied by a revolving radar dish, provides an intuitive view of remaining energy: five bars indicates the movement is fully wound (40 days of power); one bar means Starfleet Machine is running low on propellant (eight days of remaining power) – it’s all relative – most table clocks have a maximum power reserve of only eight days. Below 12 o’clock on the central hour-minute dome are the double retrograde seconds in the form of turret-mounted laser cannons. The cannons start in parallel and cross over one another before rapidly flying out again, an action marking off 20-second intervals. The red-tipped cannons provide eye-catching visual animation, and perhaps just as importantly, fend off enemy attacks against the core of the craft just underneath: the regulator, which has deliberately been placed in full view for all to admire.

One of the biggest challenges for L’Epée was respecting the movement configuration required by MB&F’s spacecraft design. L’Epée’s calibre – featuring five main spring barrels (in series for optimal performance) – usually equips vertically standing clocks, but here it is laid flat. The escapement platform also had to be set horizontally to be protected by the turret-mounted laser cannons. Naturally, the movement beats with a precision that Starfleet would be proud of, for an impressive accuracy of -2 to +2 minutes over 40 days! Every component (except the 48 jewels) of the superlatively finished palladium-treated brass movement is designed and manufactured at L’Epée’s Swiss atelier. The gears and mainspring barrels are on full display thanks to the skeletonised mainplate and concentric C-shaped external structure in stainless steel. Starfleet Machine can rest on both ends of its vertical landing gear; useful for when you turn it over to wind the mainspring and set the time. When conceiving Starfleet Machine, MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser set out to boldly go where no clock designer had gone before, and L’Epée has enthusiastically enjoyed the ride. CEO Arnaud Nicolas says: “MB&F’s idea for Starfleet Machine blew my mind. Like Max, I am a big sci-fi fan so when MB&F came to us with the design, we had to accept the challenge. Our team has been really inspired by this piece, and we think others will be too.” Transparent ‘biosphere' dome Starfleet Machine comes with its own transparent biosphere dome of blown mineral glass, fitting over the top and following the contours of the vessel’s three graceful arcs. In intergalactic missions, the dome creates a life-supporting habitat for the vessel and its crew on inhospitable planets. Here on earth, it protects Starfleet Machine from potential environmental hazards incompatible with high-end clocks: dust and curious fingers! The dome is made in glass which, given its smooth profile and handle-free form, makes it light and easily removable when turning the clock over for time setting and winding. 22

Le Duel Perpetuel Tourbillon combines the most beautiful horological complications in one clock. L’Epée 1839 has personalized the Duel collection by creating and developing a special Theme : fencing display of two swords crossing representing L’Epée’s logo. These animations are the guideline of the entire collection called Le Duel. This masterpiece, emblem of L’Epée’s know how, includes a Perpetual Calendar, a Tourbillon, a Double Retrograde Second, and a Double Power Reserve animation. L’Epée 1839 has developed these complication in-house with its dynamic designers and engineers. The verticality of the Duel Perpetuel Tourbillon permits to admire the first animation : A Tourbillon, on top of the clock, placed horizontally, fixed on the two swords, with a 60-seconds revolution. Just next to this first complication, placed vertically, at 12., the Double Retrograde Seconds jumping every 20 seconds. At 6, you will find two symmetric swords going from 1 to 0, showing the Power Reserve of the 40-day movement. Placed at the bottom, this clock integrates an inline Perpetual Calendar including Day, Date, Month and Year on jumping discs. Classic theme to be used as the L’Epée brand signature, the animated logo is in fact a power-reserve indicator. The Power-Reserve Indicator can be seen at 6 o’clock. It is at its maximum when the two swords cross to create the logo of the brand. When they separate, the angle between the swords opens gradually and after 40 days of autonomy, it is time to wind up the movement : The logo has been reversed and the 2 swords are pointing down.

To go even further in the horological art, this clock includes an in line Perpetual Calendar that indicates the Day, Date, Month and Year. The display of the Julian calendar is done through jumping discs. The energy is accumulated by a mechanical system throughout the day and then this energy is released at midnight allowing discs to jump from one indication to another instantly. When the clock is stopped for some reason, setting the calendar is done at the same time as the time setting. If it is necessary to go back, there is no need to stop the clock, the adjustment in reverse is possible and the discs are sliding backwards. The system Day, Date, Month and Year does not get out of sync even when going into reverse from January 1 to December 31 or in leap years. This is particularly rare and unusual for this type of complication. Le Duel Perpetuel with its limited edition of 88 pieces, is the living proof that l’Epée has been pursuing since 1839 its long tradition of horological innovations.

Based on the emblematic collection of the brand, the name “BlackPearl” is inspired by the well-known vessel where many duels took place. This amazing mechanical movement offers the striking contrast between intense black plates and the gold-plated (or palladium) wheels, pinions and barrels. The play of color between black plates, with Cote de Genève finishing, and the movement either palladium-plated or gold-plated allow to highlight the fabulous spectacle of two swords following the rhythm of the second and clashing every 20 second. L’Epée 1839 and Reuge have joined forces to come up with yet another unique creation. L’Epée and Reuge have a true experience in mastering their own art. The accomplishment is an astounding new clock masterpiece featuring a music box that the owner is able to enjoy every hour or on demand. The Duet timepiece presents a Swiss Made 40-day mechanical movement with a 12-melodie music box. L’Epée 1839 and Reuge are respectively the master creator of clocks with undeniable know-how in the development of prestigious mechanical movements and the master of bespoke music boxes with unique know-how in the development of unsurpassed mechanical music. The duet is available in two different configuration either classic or soul with associated music. The name Duet comes from the representation of 2 people playing at the same time which is fully represented here by Reuge & L’Epée 1839 working together to create the Duet with 2 configurations (Classic or Soul).

The Musical Clock This true accomplishment goes back to the origins of both companies. An inspired collaboration of commune musical work has been carried out with this exceptional “Duet” musical clock. The hour-strike complication has been upgraded with a mechanical musical movement. These melodies are now available in either the classic or soul family. World famous 12 tunes can be heard for 8 seconds on each hour or on demand. The Mechanical Movement The caliber 2012, an adaptation of the L’Epée 1839 well-known caliber 2010, has a strong personality with a 40-day power reserve animated by five barrels. The mechanical movement is paired to the amazing musical movement from Reuge with an in-house mechanism. The Music Box A specific melody is played for 8 seconds on each new hour. The musical movement has an autonomy of 40 days. Two repertoires are presently available with either classical or soul music.

The clocks’ aficionados will appreciate this skeleton clock staging a spectacular Tourbillon. The “ La Tour ” collection adopts the “ Less is more” motto of the famous Bauhaus Director Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe. On that minimalist and pure design, a very sophisticated Tourbillon device replaces the standard escapement. A closer look of that most sought Tourbillon complication is quite fascinating and displays its beauty : the “two swords” bridge reminding us of the great history of L’Epée 1839. This special La Tour-Billon highlights the mechanical movement whose elegance is revealed through the cover glass.

L’Epée 1839 has decided to offer to watchmaking passionate the possibility to acquire a 8-day movement clock of a new style, where every parts of the movement can be admired very easily. The beauty of the movement is highlighted here by a quite simple dressing where lighting effects give it all its magnificence. The piece of Art incorporates 18 jewels of a majestic brightness. Two housing configurations have been developed, one plated with gold or palladium and associated to the various finishing of the movement. The Second one covered with black lacquer contrasts with the movement. All of this to enhance the sophisticated soul of the clock.

Carriage Clock Carriage clocks used to be one of the most useful accessoire for business people and for militaries.

According to a legend, Napoleon decided to give to every officer a carriage clock to be able to organize his strategies better.

The first authentic carriage clock was made in Paris at the start of the 19th Century under the auspices of the great Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823), the most inspired of all watchmakers.

Carriage clocks are also known in France as “Officer’s clocks” and the name is based on an historical anecdote. It is said that Napoleon, having

almost lost a major battle because one of his officers was late, ordered his military chiefs to carry a carriage clock with them at all times. Orders placed with master clockmakers always included the reference “a clock for an officer” and this brought the name into common parlance.

Anglaise Carriage Clocks created by L’Epée are symbolizing decades of know-how and expertise from passionate clockmakers. Four Clocks representing the excellence of the powerful, these Anglaise are usually placed on a desk, for example on The Pope’s Desk. This collection is available in various versions : timepiece, strike and repeat, alarm, and even a complication : the moon phase, all swiss made 8-day mechanical movement. There are all made of fine quality polished brass and feature a white dial with black roman numerals. On top, there is a bowed design carrying handle to respect the traditional design of Anglaise Clocks.

By designing a Carriage Clock with a surprising approach, L’Epée temperes the tradition with a bold skeletonized dial usually used with contemporary clocks and watches, and creates the Anglaise Squelette. This design is used to highlight the beautiful mechanic of this Carriage Clock, that can be admired from all side thanks to the housing made of mineral glass. The transparency and the art inside plays with lights and eyes to bring the admiration of the connoisseurs. This gorgeous carriage clock is gold plated with a traditional platform-mounted jeweled escapement place on top and visible through the beveled glass. Each carriage clock comes with an upholstered-interior presentation box and gold-plated winding key. This Corniche includes an 8day swiss made movement with Alarm. L’Epée 1839 is proud to keep alive the tradition of Carriage clocks by developing and creating the collection Ovale. This specific shape was introduced during the second half of the XIXth century. Oval cases were found in a considerable variety, often engraved, with enamel sides or porcelain panels. Variety that L’Epée 1839, faithfull to its history, can realize on special request. This complete collection of Ovale is traditionally made in house in Switzerland with massive brass, gold-plated finishing, and white dial. Available either with or without alarm, strike, moonphase and calendar.

L’Epée’s Giant Ovale timepiece has been created accordingly to L'Epée's rich history of designing and developing incredible carriage clocks. A mechanical heart beats in this carriage clock, A “movement de Paris” is placed on the top of a pendulum enveloped in a Polished brass cabinet closed by mineral glasses to protect its heart. The entire movement can be admired through the transversal glasses from all sides. The set of wheels comes alive each half-hour and hour to activate the subtle bell ringing. The owner’s daily time is somehow regulated by the clock’s pendulum and its permanent oscillations.
