Accounting Elective Track Opus College of Business, University of St. Thomas
Discover the skill set of responsibility. As the common language of business, accounting is
invaluable. Companies use it to track financial history, stay fiscally healthy and plan growth. From
Wall Street to the banking industry to corporate offices and nonprofit sector, accounting empowers
decision makers to understand both the performance and the potential of organizations.
The UST MBA accounting track can prepare you to work for a public accounting firm, private
business or public corporation, government or nonprofit organization. You will have the skills to:
prepare financial statements
conduct audits and other assurance work
design accounting systems and budgets
prepare tax work for individuals or companies
analyze and interpret financial information reflecting an organization's performance
participate in the management of an organization
Common positions in accounting include accountant (financial, tax, corporate, or investment),
controller, auditor, assurance/compliance manager, business/systems analyst, operations manager,
and revenue administrator.
Interested in becoming a Certified Public Accountant?
While not mandatory for many accounting jobs, the certified public accountant (CPA) credential
may be valuable in certain career paths and industries. The UST MBA program curriculum can help
meet the CPA education requirements for both undergraduate accounting majors and non-accounting
majors. The Minnesota Society of CPAs website is an excellent resource to learn more about the
CPA profession and certification process. Students interested in completing the education
requirements to be eligible to sit for the CPA exam must complete certain elective topics and a
minimum number of accounting-specific credit hours, per the Minnesota Board of Accountancy
rules and statutes.
Proper planning and course sequencing is critical, as some accounting elective courses are only
offered once per academic year. Consult your program adviser and the accounting department chair
early to review your previous credits and build the best plan for your goals and background.
For more information about the accounting electives and/or the CPA education requirements
and certification process, please contact Dr. Jane Saly, Chair of the OCB accounting
department. She can be reached at [email protected].
