A Brief History and Introduction . . . North Dakota State University offered its first business course in 1891. Business-related courses and majors were listed under various academic departments until 1975 when the University created the Department of Business Administration and Economics. In 1987, NDSU established the College of Business Administration, which subsequently shortened its name to the College of Business in 2006. The College of Business is committed to providing students with a quality education in the functional areas of business, a systematic exposure to the global business issues they will face in their careers, and an introduction to the technologies that will be a part of their work life. The College is guided by its mission statement “to develop professionally competent organizational citizens in a learning environment centered on creating and sharing knowledge,” and by the principle held by the University that students are paramount. The College is accredited by AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Accreditation confirms an institution’s commitment to quality and continuous improvement through a rigorous and comprehensive peer review process. NDSU is one of only three schools in North Dakota and western Minnesota with AACSB International accreditation. The College is located in Richard H. Barry Hall. Business classes were first held there in August 2009. Richard H. Barry Hall is one of three facilities at the NDSU Downtown campus. It is home to more than 1,400 students, faculty, and staff. This wireless complex consists of 135,000 square feet and includes a six-story building with faculty and administrative offices, a three-story wing featuring 14 high-technology classrooms including a financial management center, and a 284-seat auditorium. GENERAL COLLEGE POLICIES

1. The College of Business may consider granting transfer credit for upper level business courses from colleges that are accredited by AACSB International. Business courses from programs that do not hold AACSB International accreditation cannot be used for a major or a minor in the College of Business; such courses may be eligible for use as a free elective. The College of Business accepts a maximum of nine credits of non-NDSU 300 and 400-level business courses from AACSB International programs with the approval of the department.

2. Pre-approval from the department head or chair is required to enroll in 300 and 400-level business courses at another university or Tri-College University. Transfer courses with grades of D are not accepted for Acct 200, Acct 201, and 300 and 400-level major requirements.

3. Only juniors or seniors meeting the grade point requirement (i.e., 2.50) will be allowed to enroll in 300-400 level courses in the College of Business.

4. Students are required to earn a minimum grade of ‘B’ in ACCT 200 and 201, or the equivalent transfer courses to enroll in 300 and 400-level accounting courses.

5. College of Business courses completed in previous semester are considered valid for degree requirements if taken within the previous five years. College of Business coursework taken before the five-year limit may be reviewed by the College of Business Student Progress Committee to determine its appropriateness to the major requirements.

6. Students majoring in the College of Business cannot minor in business administration.

GENERAL DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

1. Admission to the major program requires the successful completion of the pre-major and college courses with a grade of ‘C’ or higher, a 2.50 institutional grade point average, and a minimum of 60 credits.

2. Students must be accepted into the major prior to the completion of the last 30 credits in required 300-400 level College of Business courses.

3. Students must earn a grade of ‘C’ or higher in all courses included in the professional program, a 2.50 cumulative grade point average, and the minimum number of credits for the major.

Students in the College of Business are responsible for reviewing the requirements of their chosen major, and for monitoring their individual progress toward degree completion.

CODE OF ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY AND CONDUCT The College of Business emphasizes the importance of adhering to ethical business practices. We expect our students to abide by the principles of honesty and integrity in fulfilling the requirements of their degree. Students who violate these principles by cheating or plagiarizing another person's work will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the University. (Refer to the NDSU University Senate Policy, Sec. 335- Code of Academic Responsibility and Conduct, http//www.ndsu.nodak.edu/policy/335.htm.)

GLOBAL BUSINESS SECOND MAJOR 2015-2016

Overview This major combines global business courses with language training and an in-depth study abroad experience to qualify students for management positions in the diverse, multicultural, and global environment they will encounter in the future. It is not enough to simply learn about global business: students must be well-positioned for careers of trust and leadership in the global economy. They will be, as the COB slogan states, “Globally Prepared, Ready to Lead.” Requirements for a Second Major in Global Business I. First Major Requirement. Students must have a first major in Accounting, Business

1 The intent of this core requirement is to ensure that the study abroad experience includes an academic component related to the country where the experience takes place. In addition to BUSN 341 (business environment, institutions, history, and cultures of the European Union), BUSN 394 (business environment, institutions, history, and cultures of China) will fulfill this requirement. 379 courses from across campus (faculty directed field experience in a foreign country), and other study abroad transfer courses approved by the department chair will also fulfill this requirement. While these courses will fulfill the academic requirement portion of the study abroad experience, the student must study abroad for at least three weeks as described in requirement IV.

IV. Study Abroad Requirement

Each student must complete an approved study abroad experience. Although the core requirement of BUSN 341 or equivalent already encompasses a study abroad experience, students earning a major in global business must study abroad for at least three weeks.

In some cases, the study abroad requirement is fulfilled by one study abroad experience – e.g. a five week program in Europe or a full semester abroad. However, two shorter programs may be substituted for a longer program (e.g., the ten-day COB spring break experience in Eastern Europe and the twelve-day COB summer trip to China).

Foreign students who are enrolled at NDSU will not be required to complete a study abroad experience. Instead, they must complete one of the following North American history courses: HIST 382, 421, 422, 423, 424, 425, 429, 431, 434, 436, 437, or 476. This history course will substitute for the “European Business Environment or equivalent study abroad course” mentioned in Group A above.

Pre-Business Core Recommendations

While not required, students are encouraged to take either ANTH 111 (Introduction to Anthropology) or

COMM 216 (Intercultural Communications) to fill the Cultural Diversity requirement.
