Tourism In The Leisure Of People With

    Disability

Leisure and tourism arekey aspects of manysocieties in which peoplewith or without disabilitiesshould have the freedom

to participate. Clearly it isnot only environmentalfactors or the person'simpairment that affect theexperience.

    Attitudes, sense and

feelings are intangiblefactors that neverthelesscan have a tangibleinfluence or significant rolein the constant interplaybetween the inner and

outer world of the tourist 3/4-5/2013

    Case Study-Heritage Sites

The polemic context focuses onconservation within heritage settingsas well as adopting an inclusive

disability centered approach. Notions of authenticity form the

conservational parameters, in termsof recommending caution to heritagebodies as to potential irreversibleinfringements on historic settingswhen considering improving disabledaccess to sites.

Prior to investigating the ideologicalclash between disability andconservation, it is important to offeran explanation of what constitutesdisability and how it is regarded byvarious quarters.

The Authenticity Of The Location And

    Eligibility For Disabled Facilities

The essence is investigates how aconsensus may be reached betweenconservational ideologies and theemancipation of disabled people.

The formulation of a paradigm istherefore proposed whereby the

interests of both conservational andinclusive ideologies are carefullyconsidered.

This paradigmatic intervention wouldensure a compromise is reachedand, in the context of disability-

orientated changes to heritage sites, would ensure a level of acceptabilityin terms of associated conflictsbetween societal inclusion ideologiesand conservation.

    Conclusion

Travel as narrative of escapefrom gendered expectationsof home, travel as apleasurable form of risktaking and travel as quest fora purposeful identity beyond

deficit and depression. However, the specifics ofuniversal design withintourism require quite detailedapproaches to understand theway spaces and places areused. An understanding of thenuances of universalapproaches for accessibletourism is a necessaryprecursor to any move tooperationalise the concept forthe tourism industry.

    Conclusion

Any work that seeks toestablish the nuances ofuniversal design in relationto tourism is importantbecause of the conceptualstate of the currentliterature. Yet in relatedfields such as architecture, universal design is a welldeveloped body ofknowledge, which is usedto create enablingenvironments for all typesof embodiments. (Baucom& Grosch, 1996)
