ACCESSIBILITY STANDARDS IN
EMERGINGTECHNOLOGIES
• Emerging technologies take into consideration accessibility from the beginning. They include accessibility requirements especially total conversion.
• Examples: of emerging technologies: – IPTV
– NGN
– Home Networking
USEFUL ITU TOOLKITS

IMPROVING PARTICIPATION IN
STANDARD DEVELOPMENT
PROCESSES• Include PWDs in the standards
development process – ITU Accessibility work:
• Raise awareness among disability• Raise awareness among disabilityorganizations and standards bodies, about which are the relevant standards, what categories, and who are the people involved
IMPROVING PARTICIPATION IN
STANDARD DEVELOPMENT
PROCESSES• Introduce standards into the education
system, in particular train PWDs
• Funding: Raise resources, both human and financial and financial
ITU GUIDINGTEXTS ON
ACCESSIBILITY• PP -10 Resolution 175 (Plenipotentiary 2010, Guadalajara,
Mexico)WTDC -10 Resolution 58 (Access to information and communication technology for persons with disabilities, including persons with age-related disabilities)

CONCLUDING REMARKS
• Accessibility standards are available, lots
of work still ongoing to improve them
• Implementation and enforcement of such
standards is weak – need to improvestandards is weak – need to improve
• PWDs have the opportunity to take part
in ICT standards development process –
consult CCK and KEBS
CONCLUDING REMARKS
• Internship programmes can enhance participation and inclusion
• Special accessibility requirements can be included in standards making process (ITU) – directly or through CCK(ITU) – directly or through CCK
• Accessibility standards ecosystem requires involvement of all stakeholders
• Standards are available online for free at ITU website: www.itu.int
