What is sustainability?

Sustainability can sometimes seem like an intimidating, insurmountable and maybe even idyllic goal at the on-set. However, when examined a little closer, corporate sustainability encompasses the entire social, cultural, and economic environment for consumers and employees. Although “green” strategies are an extremely important aspect of a corporate sustainability initiative, from both an environmental and financial responsibility standpoint, it’s the overall impact to our corporate family and community that are really at the heart of a sustainability initiative.

As usual, the telecom industry is leading the charge and making significant sustainability contributions. Strategies to actively engage manufacturers in efforts to displace replacement products with energy efficient options, com-bined with the environmental impacts of launching oper-ation-level plans to reduce energy consumption and Green House Gas emissions, has caused a ripple effect that can be felt by the largest to the smallest service provider. As you will read throughout this spring issue of ACCESS magazine, the partnerships between community, service provider, manufacturers and supply chain partners is producing more possibilities for the future of telecom.

Changing the playbook to find a new and better way to operate is the key element to determining the sustain-ability program for any organization. Several key service providers are an inspiration to how this can be done well. Sprint Nextel is listed as one of the Top Technology & Tele-com Partners by the EPA for their use of solar and wind technology which represents 5% of their total electricity usage with plans to also reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions 20% by 2017. In addition, both AT&T and Verizon have communicated unparalleled sustainability programs by engaging the supply chain partners and manufactur-ers in their individual pursuits to change the landscape of sustainability. In 2012, Newsweek announced the top 28 Green Leaders in Supply Chain Emissions. Telecom manu-facturers and service providers represented a substantial portion of those topping the list and, as I anticipate; more will likely be added to the list for 2013.

In the end, the importance of sustainability is a proven entity. According to Accenture’s study of 275 global For-tune 1,000 companies, the top 50 companies for perfor-mance in sustainability also outperformed the bottom 50 by 16% for shareholder returns over a three-year period. But moreover, the availability of equipment that provides high quality performance while reducing energy con-sumption allows service providers, even those not yet fully committed to sustainability programs, new solutions to realize power and GHG savings as a byproduct of de-ploying a quality network.

The KGP Companies sustainability program is in the in-fancy stage of collecting and measuring baselines to stra-tegically target key areas to impact ongoing sustainability performance. Current efforts to support sustainability ef-forts include ensuring that, as new operation centers are opened, the infrastructure is energy efficient. In addition, an overall focus on corporate responsibility has included ensuring a comprehensive business continuity plan is in place for KGP operations and our customers for many years. In the end, the center of our approach is to ‘leave the world and our industry better than we found it each and every day.’ As additional elements of our business are added to the KGP Companies Sustainability Program an inclusive approach will be developed to insure we give back to our community, take care of our employees and reduce the impact to our environment.

“Changing the playbook to find a new and better way to operate is the key element to determining the sustainability program for any organization.”

ERICO® CADWELD® welded electrical connections are used to connect the grounding and bonding conductors to the telecommunications ground electrode system, including ground rod electrodes, ground conductors, fences and reinforcement steel. ERICO CADWELD connections provide a permanent, low resistance connection needed to create a long-lasting, reliable bonding network with long service life. ERICO CADWELD con-nections will not deteriorate or loosen with time. Connections are made with affordable, lightweight and portable equipment consisting of weld metal, graphite molds, electronic control unit and accessories.

ERICO CADWELD continues to be the favorite choice for the formation of ground electrode systems at telecommunications wireless and wire-line sites. ERICO CADWELD Connections will withstand lightning fault cur-rents without failing during operation both in test conditions and in real life applications. The current carrying capacity of the connection is equal to or greater than that of the conductor. ERICO CADWELD connections remain low in impedance for the lifetime of the telecommunication site. This attribute contributes towards keep-ing noise levels down and hence increases the effectiveness of the data transmission.

Users of ERICO CADWELD can take confidence in the fact that standards and guidelines like Motorola R56, Verizon NSTD 46 and AT&T TP 76416 recommend exothermic connections and in particular refer to ERICO CADWELD.

The ERICO® CADWELD® PLUS System features an improved, easy-to-use electronic control unit to help simplify the welded connection process. A small, hand-held, battery-powered ignition tool eliminates the need for starting material and flint igniters. The improved design is available with two field-replaceable leads in lengths of 6 ft (1.8 m) or 15 ft (4.6 m) for increased flexibility and versatility in the field.

To initiate the reaction, the high-temperature control unit lead is attached to the ignition strip on the ERICO CADWELD PLUS welding material cup using a custom, purpose-designed termination clip. The charging and dis-charging sequence is started by simply pushing and holding the ignition button. Within a few seconds, the control unit sends a predetermined voltage to the ignition strip and the reaction is initiated. As the “ready” light is flashing during the first few seconds, the installer can release the button to prevent the ignition.

This CE/UL® Recognized battery-powered ignition system is designed for 600 connections with one set of eight standard AA batteries (included) and requires no special batteries or chargers.

In a recent study of its customer base, a national provider of security and premise automation services found that customers using automation had a significantly higher retention rate than those that were simply security customers. This Over-the-Top (OTT) service provider has come to realize something that has been well known in the telecommunications industry for a very long time – a close and well-maintained relationship that provides services integral to daily life and operation is the best path to keeping customers happy and on board.

Smart premise automation services have been getting a lot of attention from local service providers as a new, and potentially robust, recurring revenue stream that leverages the deployed broadband infrastructure. While this is absolutely the case, the delivery of connected home services is a crowded market, with national wireless carriers and other OTT competitors working to woo subscribers, so it is crucial to approach the market with differenti-ated services. The good news for the local provider is that they not only have the infrastructure and relationship in place, but also that a one-size offering from a national provider definitely does not fit all local needs. Leveraging the existing trust relationship between the local provider and the customer is key to building a successful smart premise service.

With the understanding that smart premise services which are deeply ingrained in day-to-day operations will absolutely help to keep customers under subscription, service providers should groom service offerings to maximize integration. In the business sector, offering combined service packages that incorporate automation in security, power use and HVAC management, employee access and logging, and even time-card management, using a unified management platform can accomplish two goals: Enhance operational efficiency for the business, and instantiate a more complex and deeper relationship with the service provider.

In the area of home automation, there are several different applications that have proven to increase customer stickiness. Simple integration of multiple sensors and controls in a single portal that enables complex control operations is a key application. An example of this could be the use an “at home” profile that sets a thermostat, turns on specific lights, and sends notifications, when a smart door lock is opened. The engagement of multiple devices that are activated in response to a single event provides convenience for the subscriber, and this added convenience will make it more difficult for the subscriber to switch. Localization of features to address severe weather conditions using temperature and moisture sensors, or providing vacation monitoring services for snow-birds heading south for the winter months, can also provide differentiation at a level not offered by outside competitors.

Another important service that is getting a lot of attention is in the area of home healthcare and aging-in-place services. For the comfort and peace of mind of the person wishing to live independently and their families or caretakers, automa-tion services using simple rules can be invaluable. For example, setting time parameters associated with motion sensors placed throughout the home can provide caretakers with early notifications of unusual or unanticipated activity – or

inactivity – without relying on the person to take any specific action. And, when appropriate an emergency alert pendant or button can be included as an additional service to enhance safety and security.

With growing competition from OTT offerings and the financial pressures being faced by many local service providers, new revenue streams are invaluable. However, new revenue that also brings along a strong element of customer retention is a bonus that definitely warrants a closer look. The proven increase in customer loyalty when smart premise automation services become deeply ingrained in daily life and business operations is one such service that can make an impact on the operating company’s bottom line.

In the midst of Telect’s bold gray and yellow branding, customers are starting to see some serious green. The green’s coming from Telect’s nrgSMART™ technology, the new hardware-software duo currently deployed in na-tional field trials and providing actionable, circuit-level network data. From immediate opportunities to slash OPEX and CAPEX, to the future— which includes analyzing alternative energy payback— nrgSMART monitors and generates the data for network power provisioning, remote site management, and circuit threshold moni-toring. nrgSMART’s patented circuit-level monitoring delivers a cost-effective solution to obtain accurate data without complex calibration issues. Real-time data collection opens the door to energy savings, equipment pro-tection, and proactive outage prevention.

Today’s nrgSMART product line provides monitoring for secondary power distribution through the nrg100GMT10-M low-current GMT panel and the nrg600BT08-M 600-amp load center. The panels utilize low-current sensor modules with the GMT fuses, and high-current sensor modules with the BT breakers and TFD fuses. Each panel also provides A and B feed voltage measurements and two independent temperature measurements for hot and cold aisle monitoring.

Primary power distribution monitoring capabilities will be available soon with the release of the 800-amp BDFB. “The BDFB is going to address a lot of central office, primary power distribution scenarios,” Ryan Hendrickson, nrgSMART Program Manager, said. “Being able to measure each circuit individually at the BDFB is a great way to provide primary power monitoring as well as feed-level monitoring for secondary distribution.”

Telect’s nrgSMART development began several years ago, when Telect’s R&D team recognized the need for effi-cient monitoring in the DC market. The result? Another Telect solution. “This is a completely novel concept,” Rich-ard Denenny, Telect Vice President of Product and New Market Development, said. “Nobody else is providing this level of insight, and this technical feat speaks to the engineering expertise at Telect. nrgSMART is where software and hardware come together to win the day,” Denenny said.

Telect rolled out the first field trial in March 2013The first trials were set up to assist in the product development process and fine-tune the nrgSMART solutions in an actual network scenario. Currently, there are seven active field trials, focused on colocation (colo) facilities in cable TV and telecom, with data centers on the immediate horizon. Customers in enterprise and utility networks have also shown interest.

Field trial participants, and colos in particular, are focused on three immediate benefits: Energy savings, threshold monitoring, and reduced truck rolls. “For busi-nesses in colo or shared-use facility offerings, there’s an immediate, hard ROI,” Denenny said. “You can see real, immediate energy savings. When you add in the value of risk mitigation – both avoiding cascading breaker failures and outages – and being able to take preventative actions to keep the network up, you an-swer customer demand and regulatory demand for uninterrupted service.” Colos could realize savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, with the ROI measured in months. A customer occupying a smaller colo footprint could save thousands of dollars each month, and a customer occupying a larger colo foot-print could save tens of thousands of dollars each month.

“We can help customers lower costs, especially in the colocation space, where customers are paying for bulk-rate energy. If they were able to actually determine how much they need or how much they’re actively using, they could better adjust their feeds and energy costs,” Hendrickson added. “This energy reduction – and the resulting cost reduction – stems directly from being able to identify and use the bulk feed level that you actually need,” Hendrickson explained. “It’s estimated that many colos are only using one-third of what they’re paying for.”

“This is a completely novel concept,” Richard Denenny, Telect Vice President of Product and New Market Development

Page 12: ACCESS - Trusted Solutions for Your NetworkThe improved design is available with two field-replaceable leads in lengths of 6 ft (1.8 m) or 15 ft (4.6 m) for increased flexibility and

The immediate green impact is clear“Whenever you’re helping businesses make informed decisions about natural resources and facilitating a reduction in power consumption, you’re pushing a green solution,” Denenny said. “This is absolutely a green solution.” Denenny continued, “nrgSMART provides that key factor in decision-making: The data. Using the colo or shared facility as an example, the ability to understand and expose actual power consumption allows you to effectively scale your power consumption up or down. Scale it up to protect equipment, or scale it down to save money on the power that you’ve been paying for but not actually consuming.”

Threshold management is also a major concern. “With nrgSMART, a colo or shared facility can monitor primary power distribution for each colocation customer. The data helps the facility avoid crossing critical threshold levels,” Hendrickson said. “The facility operators can look at each individual customer’s circuit(s), or they can get a view of the total load from all of the customers in the facility.” There are clear benefits for the colo’s customer as well, Hen-drickson said. “With nrgSMART, the colo’s customer can measure their equipment performance over seasonality, and put thresholds in place to say, ‘Okay. I’m only using 50 amps, not the 200 amps I’m paying for.’ The customer could then go to a 60- or 70-amp circuit and save money. Now, if that same customer grows, and the power starts to go up, they could have a threshold alert sent that says, ‘Hey, you’re close to your 60 amps.’ Then the customer could bump up to 100 amps. The bottom line is that nrgSMART provides a proactive measurement method to ensure that you’re within bounds.”

With modern customer demands and regulatory network requirements, network downtime is unacceptable. “nrgSMART provides that measurement tool for real-time insight,” Hendrickson said. “Up until now, customers have been unable to measure thresholds at the circuit level. Most customers only see their feed-level circuit measured through resistive shunts, but you simply can’t manage redundant circuit thresholds this way. You have to see the equipment feeds,” Hendrickson said. “With nrgSMART,” Hendrickson continued, “you can get the data to reduce your risk of having critical equipment, like quality-of-life services, go out. There are huge fines, into the hundreds

of thousands of dollars, associated with 911 service outages. You want to reduce the potential of that ever happening. You want to guard against cascaded breaker failures due to routine maintenance or environmental interruptions. You need to know that you have enough room in the breaker to handle your equipment’s re-dundant power feeds,” Hendrickson explained. “Imagine that you have two glasses of water. Picture both glasses 90% full. If I take one of those glasses and pour it into the other, that second glass will not hold all the water. To avoid spillover, you have to ensure that both of the glasses are no more than 45% full. Then, when you pour the first glass of water into your second glass, you’ll have room to fit all of the water into that second glass. That’s managing your thresholds. That’s avoiding a cascaded breaker failure.

“Cascaded breakers could be caused by the environment— or the equipment, but customers often tell me about technicians bringing down equipment. A technician will often intentionally bring down a feed so that they can work on it; the techni-cian is assuming that “B” is going to take over. In actuality, if you’re operating above those thresholds, and you don’t realize it, a technician can take down your equip-ment and generate a cascaded failure. Being able to monitor equipment feeds, to check your equipment’s status before you send out a truck, is a huge advantage. When a piece of equipment does go down, you could remotely check the equip-ment status and analyze what triggered the event. Reducing truck rolls could save thousands of dollars each month.”

These benefits are only the beginning of the product line’s potential“Through the advanced development of our hardware and analytics engine,” Hendrickson explained, “nrgSMART will move deeper into the alternative energy space and help customers make the best choices for solar, wind, and generator power deployment strategies. We also envision developing hardware to manage charge and discharge cycles’ various battery chemistries. I think the overall vision really turns more into data analytics,” Hendrickson said. “We can see that anywhere that we can take performance data is incredibly valuable.”

ACCESS | Spring Issue 2014 17

The National Broadband Plan brought energy efficiency to the forefront of the telecommunications industry by nam-ing it as one of the top six goals for broadband consumers. In response, carriers have launched comprehensive sustain-ability programs and recycling efforts to help reduce their global carbon footprint. Carriers are now taking the initia-tive to migrate their networks to greener architectures. These include Passive Optical Networks (PONs), collapsed networks and automated provisioning.

Carriers are putting pressure on network equipment ven-dors to develop ways to network more equipment energy efficiently. The push for reduced power in telecommuni-cations networks has resulted in most broadband equip-ment suppliers providing DSL variants with power back off modes with a variety of ways to reduce power by using lower power spectral density (PSD) masks and functioning in a reduced power mode. However, much of the activity in the Broadband Forum indicates that there that power con-sumption can still be improved.

PONs are now the preferred access network of choice for most major worldwide carriers. Regardless of the FTTx vari-ant, all carriers recognize the green savings associated with PONs. PONs have no electronics in the field, which reduces not only energy consumption, but also real estate, cooling, and maintenance costs.

Advanced power management schemes support a “sleep mode” that enables a reduced power state when consumers are not actively transmitting information. The challenge to equipment suppliers is to make “sleep modes” as seamless as possible by activating a fast restart that ensures a con-sumer does not experience any perceptible lag in service.

In North America, the primary ANSI standards development body for Telecommunications service providers is the Alli-ance for Telecommunications Industry Standards (ATIS). In 2009, ATIS adopted three standards to address energy ef-ficiency. These standards provide a comprehensive meth-odology (TEER Rating) for measuring and reporting energy consumption, and uniformly quantifying a network compo-nent’s ratio of “work performed” to energy consumed.

The efficiency standards are specific to equipment type, network location and classification. Normalizing these rat-ings by functionality enables “apples-to-apples” equipment comparison. This systemized assessment results in repeat-able and comparable energy consumption measurements.

Let’s look at some examples of how this applies to the dif-ferent technologies generally utilized in the North Ameri-can environment.

ADSL2+ADSL2+ provides rates of 6 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream on the longest loops of a Carrier Serving Area (3.7 km of 24 AWG twisted pair copper loop), with much higher rates attainable on shorter loops. Using the standard 6 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream at 12 kft. of 24 AWG copper, the aggregate throughput is 7 Mbps with a TEER of 44.8.

VDSL2VDSL2 provides 25 Mbps downstream and 4 Mbps up-stream over 1.2 km loops at 24 AWG, with rates as high as 80 Mbps on shorter loops. Using the standard 25 Mbps down-stream and 4 Mbps upstream over 4 kft. loops at 24 AWG the aggregate throughput is 29 Mbps with a TEER of 43.7.

FTTH (GPON)The access node in a GPON network is the Optical Line Ter-minal (OLT), which is typically located in the CO although it may also be placed in the outside plant. OLTs are frequently implemented as modules within a large chassis which sup-ports over 1,000 subscribers.

At a split ratio of 1:32 the typical reach is 20 km. Data in a GPON network is provided by separate downstream and up-stream wavelengths. The total downstream capacity is 2.5 Gbps, which is shared between the Optical Network Units. Total capacity is 1.25 Gbps upstream. With combined up-stream and downstream capacity, the aggregate throughput is 117 Mbps per subscriber with a TEER rating of 8,849.

FTTH (Active Ethernet)In an Active Ethernet network, there is no split ratio and subscriber capacity is based on the network feed. The maximum reach can be up to 80 km using high-powered transceivers. Using a distance of 40 km, the Active Ether-net service is defined as 100 Mbps upstream and 100 Mbps downstream. In this instance, the aggregate subscriber throughput is 200 Mbps with a TEER of 7,800.

ConclusionsThe move away from arbitrary power limits on devices to a more comprehensive focus on innovative design measured by efficiency is not only good for the environment but is good for the telecommunications industry. The TEER metric adds an efficiency dimension to energy consumption that did not exist in the past. This is expected to drive innovation in the equipment supplier market.
