next-generation IP/Ethernet services and a large, incumbent

SONET/SDH service network.

Over a decade ago, TDM and PDH service expansion led to the deployment of SONET/SDH networks to support the ramp-up of new residential, commercial and mobile backhaul services. This expansion required circuit-based PDH/TDM access, such as T1, E1 and J1 services. This resulted in the deployment of many SONET/SDH networks to aggregate and transport these growing, circuit-based services, many of which continue to deliver significant, though declining, revenue streams. However, new next-generation services based on Ethernet are rapidly expanding as demand is increasing among almost every enterprise vertical ranging from healthcare and finance to education and are scaling to near gigabit per second levels. Many analysts forecast Ethernet service revenue will grow to $40 billion (USD) by 2015. However, it is not just enterprise verticals that are driving the demand for packet-based service and transport architectures. 1 Mbps DSL residential services are being replaced by 100 Mbps or more Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) deployment models. Businesses are no longer satisfied with sub-10 Mbps TDM/PDH-based access services and are demanding 100 Mbps and greater Ethernet LAN extension services to support cloud computing initiatives on a global level. Rich 4G mobile broadband applications are driving the need for bandwidth connections of 100 Mbps and beyond resulting in the need for gigabit Ethernet services at the cell site. With all of this service expansion, fibre infrastructure is being stressed. Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) based on fixed optics has provided relief, allowing multiple virtual paths per fiber facility. However, the effort to change these predetermined virtual paths is operationally expensive and new service architectures demand services access and aggregation flexibility.

ADTRAN developed the Optical Networking Edge (ONE) solution based on the latest packet optical technologies to enable service providers to dramatically simplify service delivery and network operation, while accelerating time to revenue. ONE provides agile photonics and enhanced multi-service delivery with the introduction of a right-sized, compact Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (mini-ROADM) system-on-a-blade. This is complemented by multi-service Optical Transport Network (OTN, ITU-T G.709) Switchponder, scalable Carrier Ethernet delivery with subtended networking and tunable/pluggable optics. This solution provide operators with flexible and efficient network architectures improving their market responsiveness to ever-changing service and network requirements driven by traffic growth and the transition from circuit to packet services.

ADTRAN’s OTN Switchponder is a multi-service unit that integrates an OTN switch with a DWDM transponder within a single module. It provides remotely configurable any-service to any-port operation. It delivers OTN mapping, switching, aggregation and transport capabilities, allowing operators to simultaneously transport SONET/SDH, Ethernet or other services such as Fibre Channel.

ADTRAN’s mini-ROADM delivers a system-on-a-blade including Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS), EDFA amplifiers, optical monitoring and auto power balancing all on a single module.
