Dear Fans, On behalf of our respective conferences, we would like to extend a warm welcome to this year’s ACC/Big Ten Women’s Basketball Challenge. Over the past year our offices, in conjunction with our member schools, have worked hard to make this a special and exciting event for the student-athletes, coaches and fans. We think that matching our two conferences’ teams together on the hardwood continues to be a great showcase for both ACC and Big Ten women’s basketball. As dedicated and loyal fans, we sincerely hope you enjoy tonight’s game. There is certainly a rich women’s basketball tradition in both conferences. The 22 teams that are participating in the Challenge have collectively combined for three National Championships, 267 NCAA Tournament appearances, 20 Final Four ap-pearances and 12 National Player of the Year awards. The ACC and Big Ten institutions have a tremendous history of academic and ath-letic balance, and we are extremely excited to shine the spotlight on what has made both leagues so strong – the student-athletes, coaches and fans. Sincerely,

John D. Swofford James E. Delany ACC Commissioner Big Ten Commissioner

Mike Petersen enters the season only 10 wins away from his 100th career victory as the head coach of Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons went 7-7 in the ACC in 2009-10, the second-best league record in school-history, and advanced to the ACC Quarterfinals for the second-straight year. Wake also earned an invitation to the Women’s NIT for the second-consecutive year.

Wake Forest returns four of its five starters from last season and 90.1 percent of the scoring from a year ago.

Senior Brittany Waters, the school’s leading returning scorer, is just 122 points shy of becoming the 17th Demon Deacon to record 1,000 career points. Waters scored 33 points vs. Miami (OH) last year, tied for the eighth-most points in a single game in school-history.

Sandra Garcia, who played with the Columbian National team this summer, was named to last year’s All-Freshman Team and was tied for the most double-doubles by a freshman in the league (7).

Michigan head coach Kevin Borseth will earn his 500th NCAA victory this season. He will join three other Big Ten coaches to cross the 500-win mark.

The Wolverines are the lone Big Ten school to remain unbeaten in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Michigan has a 3-0 record in the Challenge.

Michigan will continue to be a three-point shooting threat this season and in each of the last three seasons has finished at the top of the Big Ten in three-point field goals made.

U-M will make at least 10 national television appearances this season, including at least nine games on the Big Ten Network and one game on ESPN2.

Michigan will continue its stifling defense this season. In each of the last three years the Wolverines have limited their opponents to less than 60 points.

The Spartans have qualified for nine consecutive postseasons, winning 19 postseason games during that span.

MSU is one of only 14 teams in the country with seven-straight 20-win seasons.

Reigning Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year Kalisha Keane was the 21st Spartan to top 1,000 career points.

The Spartans have finished second in the Big Ten the last two seasons; the first time in program history that they finished among the top-2 in back-to-back seasons.

Seniors Kalisha Keane and Brittney Thomas, and junior Lykendra Johnson have earned All-Big Ten honors in each of their seasons with MSU.

The Seminoles are coming off one of the best seasons in program history, which featured a first-ever trip to the Elite Eight as well as the second consecutive regular-season co-ACC Championship and the most wins in a season ever (29-6 overall).

Florida State has built itself into a consistently strong defensive-minded team as FSU set the school record in 2009-10 for fewest points allowed per game (60.8) – a record that they had previously broken the year before also.

The Noles will feature a completely new look offensively with the addition of arguably the greatest recruiting class in program history; featuring the nation’s No. 2 prospect in Natasha Howard as well as fellow ESPNU 100 prospects Tay’ler Mingo and Olivia Bresnahan as well as Lauren Coleman.

Courtney Ward returns for her fourth and final season running the point position after breaking the school record for most assists in a season in 2009-10 with 198; in doing so, she became FSU’s all-time assists leader with 469 dimes in just 101 games.

The 2009-10 season marked FSU’s sixth-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament; a streak that is the best in school history.

After turning in its best record in 16 years and orchestrating one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation last season, Northwestern is poised to turn back-to-back winning campaigns for the first time since 1995.

Already the Wildcats’ career blocks leader, senior Amy Jaeschke will look to crack the NCAA records book to rank in the top 25 all-time in Division I

Spearheaded by her eight three-pointers against Arkansas last season, senior long-range specialist Beth Marshall returns to the court looking to climb NU’s career three-pointers made list.

Head coach Joe McKeown celebrates his 25th year of coaching in 2010-11, which is also the 35th year of basketball at Northwestern.

Sophomore Kendall Hackney is looking to build on a successful first-year campaign, earning Big Ten All-Freshmen honors and finishing second on the team in scoring and rebounding with 9.2 ppg and 5.2 rpg, respectively.

The team has also earned an unprecedented four consecutive NCAA Tournament bids.

Georgia Tech returns a very experienced roster in 2010-11, including seven upperclassmen, the most since head coach MaChelle Joseph’s 2005-06 roster, which also featured seven upperclassmen. The 10 total returning players have combined to play in 23 NCAA Tournament games.

Tech also returns 74 percent of its scoring from a year ago when it recorded 65.8 points a contest. Alex Montgomery is the team returning scorer at 11.9 points a game after returning from an ACL tear and was named to the All-ACC third team and the 2010 ACC Sixth Player of the Year.

Though the Yellow Jackets lost Brigitte Ardossi, who started all 33 games as a senior and played in a school record 130 games over her career, Tech returns seven players that started at least one game and six that started at least 10.

Head coach Kellie Harper begins her second season at NC State. Harper has four straight 20-win seasons and has made three NCAA appearances in six seasons as a head coach.

NC State returns three starters off last year’s squad that finished with a 20-14 record and made an NCAA appearance. The Wolfpack has won 20 or more games three of the last four seasons and 22 times overall.

Headlining the returnees is Marissa Kastanek, who was named the 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year.

NC State made 164 3-pointers last year and this season could break the school record of 194 set in 1995. Senior Brittany Strachan led the ACC in 3-point shooting last year at 41.9 percent, and Kastanek made a team-leading 65 3-pointers as a freshman.

Junior Bonae Holston became the first sophomore to lead NC State in both scoring (12.1) and rebounding (6.3) since the 2001 season. She enters the season one point shy of her career 700th point.

Third-year head coach Jolette Law guided the 2009-10 Fighting Illini to a 19-15 overall record. Illinois fell to top-seeded Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament and then advanced to the quarterfinals of Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).

Illinois is one of just seven Division I teams in the country without a senior on its roster heading into the 2010-11 season, joining Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Murray State, Oral Roberts, Purdue and Rutgers.

The Illini return three starters from last year’s squad in junior Lydia McCully, sophomore Karisma Penn and sophomore Kersten Magrum. Penn averaged 10.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and was a Big Ten All-Freshman team selection last year. A pair of top-100 recruits join the Fighting Illini this year as Alexis Burke and Centrese McGee will both don the Orange and Blue. Burke is a 5-11 small forward from Bainbridge, Ga., who was ranked No. 50 by HoopGurlz and No. 56 by Blue Star. McGee is a 5-8 guard from Calumet City, Ill., who was ranked No. 86 by Blue Star and No. 126 by HoopGurlz.

Coach Law welcomes Michael Peck and Usha Gilmore to the staff this year as assistant coaches, joining second-year assistant Lisa Cermignano.

The Badgers won 21 games in 2009-10, the eighth 20-plus win season in program history and the second under Coach Lisa Stone.

Alyssa Karel became the 20th UW player to record 1,000 career points at the end of the 2010 season. The 5-7 guard has been the Badgers’ leading scorer the last two seasons.

Wisconsin tied for third in the 2010 Big Ten regular season standings with a 10-8 record, its best finish under Stone. The Badgers also advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament.

The Badgers ranked 24th nationally in scoring defense last season, allowing just 56.2 points per game.

Head coach Joanne P. McCallie enters her fourth year at Duke. She became the first NCAA Division I Head Coach to be named conference coach of the year in four different leagues and the first coach to lead teams to conference championships in four different leagues.

Duke is coming off winning its first ACC Championship under McCallie and the sixth ACC title in school history. Duke claimed the 2010 ACC Tournament title with a 70-60 victory over NC State in the Greensboro Coliseum. It was the sixth ACC championship for the Blue Devil women, but their first since winning five straight from 2000-04.

The Blue Devils posted an 8-4 record against ranked opponents in 2009-10, and were listed in the top 25 of the AP poll for 206-straight weeks, which marks the longest current streak in the ACC and is third nationally.

The combination of Carolyn Swords and Stefanie Murphy are back to compete in their final season at BC. The 6-foot-6 center and 6-foot-4 forward are the most prolific frontcourt players in program history. They have combined for over 2,000 points and just over 1,500 rebounds.

Senior Carolyn Swords returns after being named All-ACC first team last season. She is a preseason Wade Trophy candidate and on the verge of breaking a number of records at Boston College. The senior has led the country in field goal percentage the last two seasons.

The Eagles six freshmen includes highly regarded guard Kristen Doherty, forward Katie Zenevitch and point guard Tiffany Ruffin, along with Korina Chapman and Shayra Brown. The class was ranked No. 12 by ESPN HoopGurlz and No. 14 by Blue Star Basketball.

Coach Sylvia Crawley is entering her third season at Boston College and has a 30-27 record. Crawley has also led the Eagles to win over ranked teams such as No. 6 Duke, No. 8 FSU and No. 21 UNC.

The Lady Lions returned to the postseason for the first time in five years with a WNIT berth last season.

Sophomore guard Alex Bentley was an All-Big Ten third team selection and unanimous Big Ten All-Freshman team choice last season after finishing in the Top 10 in the Big Ten in assists, assist-to-turnover ratio and field goal percentage.

The Lady Lions’ 17 overall wins and eight conference wins last year are the most by a Penn State team since the 2004-05 campaign. The 2004-05 squad was 19-11 overall and 13-3 in Big Ten play.

Senior guard Julia Trogele enters her final season in the blue and white ranked fifth in school history in career free throw percentage with an 81.3% mark.

Center Nikki Greene became just the second freshman in school history to register 50 or more blocks. The sophomore’s 55 rejections last season are also ninth on Penn State’s single-season list.

Virginia is coming off of its third-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, a 21-10 overall record and a third-place finish in the ACC in 2009-10.

Head coach Debbie Ryan enters her 34th season on the Virginia sidelines. The 2008 Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee owns 720 victories and last year registered her 23rd career 20-win season.

P U R D U E B O I L E R M A K E R SM A R Y L A N D T E R R A P I N SThe Boilermakers rank sixth nationally in total wins in the last 15 seasons behind Connecticut, Tennessee, Duke, Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion.

Coach Sharon Versyp has led Purdue to two NCAA Elite Eight appearances (2007, 2009) and two Big Ten Tournament championships (2007, 2008) in her four years at her alma mater.

The Boilermakers have four players who were named Miss Basketball as seniors in high school: Brittany Rayburn (Indiana), KK Houser (Nebraska), Sam Ostarello (South Dakota) and Courtney Moses (Indiana). Additionally, coach Versyp was Indiana Miss Basketball in 1984 and assistant coach Ukari Figgs was Kentucky Miss Basketball in 1995.

Purdue does not have a senior on this year’s roster, but the junior class boasts six members: Alex Guyton, Antionette Howard, Chelsea Jones, Drey Mingo, Brittany Rayburn and Samantha Woods.

Two players on Purdue’s roster used to play in the ACC. Redshirt juniors Antionette Howard transferred to Purdue from Florida State and Drey Mingo played two seasons at Maryland.

Head coach Brenda Frese is quickly approaching her 200th win as a Maryland Terrapin, with just three wins separating her from the milestone (197-73). She will have reached the milestone faster than any other women’s basketball coach in the school’s history.

Maryland earned its sixth straight 20-plus win season, helping to continue the longest streak in program history. The run also includes two 30-plus win seasons.

Maryland extended the school’s home court winning streak to 48, a record that spans the books of both men’s and women’s basketball.

The Terrapins boast the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation, bringing in top talent in Whitney Bays, Natasha Cloud, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas.

Junior Lynetta Kizer is on pace to hit 1,000 points after averaging 419 points the last two years. She currently has 838.

Maryland continues to hold all top nine of the top 10 ACC game attendance records. In 2009-10 they led in home attendance numbers for the fourth straight year with another 100,000-plus number.

2Jori Davis will end her career at Indiana University as one of the Hoosiers’ all-time leading scorers.

The Hoosiers return seven veterans and welcome seven newcomers.

Jori Davis was one of the top-five scorers in the Big Ten as a junior.

Seniors Jori Davis, Whitney Lindsay and Andrea McGuirt serve as the 2010-11 IU Women’s Basketball team captains.

IU head coach Felisha Legette-Jack is in her fifth year at the helm of the Hoosier program.

Itoro Coleman became Clemson’s fifth head coach in program history, succeeding Cristy McKinney, who coached the Tigers for five seasons. Coleman, a 2000 graduate of Clemson, was on two ACC Championship teams as a player during her career. She spent the past three seasons at Penn State.

The Tigers will have to replace 44 percent of their scoring from a season ago, including the loss of second-team All-ACC guard Lele Hardy. However, the team returns four of their top five scorers, led by Shaniqua Pauldo and Sthefany Thomas.

Sthefany Thomas, the returning career leader in points, will take aim at the 1,000 point plateau as she needs 267 to reach the milestone.

Lele Hardy finished her career with 398 steals, which ranks her 21st on the all-time NCAA Division-I list. In her career, she recorded more than 1,500 points and 900 rebounds despite her 5-11 frame.

Coleman will have at least five new players on the roster to start the season - four freshmen and one transfer student-athlete.

M I N N E S O T A G O L D E N G O P H E R SV I R G I N I A T E C H H O K I E SMinnesota has averaged 20.6 wins per season over head coach Pam Borton’s first eight years with the Golden Gophers. Borton entered the 2010-11 season just eight wins shy of becoming Minnesota’s all-time winningest women’s basketball coach.

The Gophers are 1-2 in ACC/Big Ten Challenge games, having lost at Virginia Tech (68-62) in 2007, defeated Boston College (80-60) in 2008, and lost at Maryland (66-45) last season.

Minnesota is 1-1 in its history versus Virginia Tech, losing to the Hokies as part of the inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge, and posting a 70-56 win at Williams Arena during 2004-05.

Senior captain Kristen Dockery is the lone Minnesota player who was on the Gophers’ roster for the 2007 ACC/Big Ten Challenge game versus Virginia Tech, but she did not play in that game.

The Gophers are 9-12 all-time against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
