This popular French fighter was first flown in 1 9 5 6 a n d b e c a m e operationafwHh^the French Armee de I'Air in the e a r l y ' 6 0 ' s . The Mirage's f i r s t c o m b a t experience came during the Middle E a s t w a r of 1 9 6 7 , w h e r e t h e Israeli pilots demonstrated t h e i r s u p e r b flying skill in maneuvering the Mirages t o a high-scoring victory. The proven combat ability of the Mirage quickly l e d t o foreign sales a n d t he French f i g h t e r s o o n f o u n d itself in the markings of ten countries. As popular as i t i s from a commercial point of view, the Mirage does suffer from some rather severe limitations. The design was developed during a n e r a when the highest speed a t t a i n a b l e w a s t h e m a i n o b j e c t i v e , to the detriment of maneuverability. T h e M i r a g e I I I C is fast, b u t i t requires a rather long runway, especially if a h e a v y w e a p o n s l o a d is aboard. In a t i g h t t u r n t h e d e l t a w i n g c a u s e s t h e s p e e d to drop severely, b u t a n experienced pilot can use this to h i s a d v a n t a g e a n d f o r c e his enemy to overshoot. The Mirage IIIC is powered b y a n afterburning SNECMA Atar 9 engine giving a maximum thrust of 13,225 lbs and a top speed of 1,460 mphat 39,375 feet.
