About ACADAlberta College of Art + Design students explore
their passion for creative thinking with an undergraduate
degree in Design or Fine Art. With a comprehensive
curriculum filled with a range of programs sure to
inspire, challenge and stimulate emerging artists and
designers, ACAD is the leading choice for students
who go on to work in a spectrum of creative industries
– doing what they love while building impressive
careers that impact the world of art and design.
ACAD has been a leading centre for education
and research, and a catalyst for creative inquiry and
cultural development for over 85 years. Located in
Calgary, Canada and overlooking the downtown core,
ACAD provides a unique undergraduate experience
for students in fine art, design and new media – an
experience set in the context of relevant, complementary
liberal studies and practical theory. Our Photography
and Visual Communications Design majors prepare
students for successful careers as professionals
in the discipline, practice and culture of photography
and design. And our Bachelor of Fine Arts program
is one of Canada’s most prestigious studio-based
fine art programs.
ACAD degree programs are studio-based, which
means hands-on. In our studios students explore
multiple media, applying new techniques and immersing
themselves in the practice and culture of art and
design. Our students have access to a wide range of
unique opportunities, including a strong international
exchange program and a robust scholarship and
awards offering for incoming students. Most importantly,
with a 1:9 faculty-to-student ratio, our average studio
class is kept to 15 students so students receive
individual, personal attention from a faculty made up
of a diverse group of over 115 professional practicing
artists, designers and scholars.

The Drawing major offers experience
and opportunities for personal exploration
in the visual language of drawing.
Studio research ranges from work
that is traditional in its approach to that
which challenges the very notion of drawing
while it embraces other areas of expression.
Students are introduced to a broad
spectrum of traditional and contemporary
media, techniques, subject matter, and
theory that will assist them in developing
a personal definition of drawing as well
as critical and conceptual approaches
to their work. The breadth of expertise
provided by the faculty in this program
offers students valuable insight into
the historical and contemporary practice
of drawing.
