Background

“What are the main reasons you support or oppose the introduction of the new emissions

standards?”

In December 2012, ACA Research undertook a study among decision makers in the

Australian Road Freight Transport sector to ascertain what level of support exists for adopting new emission standards.

The following details were provided;

The question was then asked;

“I would like to understand your view in regard to emissions standards and the proposal for Australia to

adopt more stringent standards in line with new international standards

that have been adopted. If adopted, the Euro 6 standards would reduce the

maximum allowable emissions from new vehicles of Oxides of nitrogen by up to 80% and particulates by up

to 66% relative to Euro 5”.

“Do you support the introduction of the new emissions standards?”

Stance on new emissions standards

Support for the introduction of the new emission standards is

somewhat weak.

Further details concerning costs and

the impact of the standards may impact the stance of one third in the sector who have

a neutral position.

Smaller operators are more resistant

to the introduction of new emission

standards possibly as a reflection of a lower capacity to absorb or pass on the expected

costs. Larger operators are more likely to support new emission standards to be

introduced.

n = 205Q1. Do you support the introduction of the new emissions standards?

Reasons to Support

In their own words

Reasons to Oppose

Reasons for being Neutral

“The truck manufacturers cannot keep up with the changes that leads to a shorter engine life and a higher cost to transport.”

“I'm concerned about air pollution and its effect on

the environment. I've seen the benefits of

Adblue such as better fuel economy.”

“Something has to be done to reduce these

emissions to allow us all to lead healthier lifestyles.”

“We have to consider the environment that we are in and if we continue like this

future generations of children will suffer. There will be

additional costs but we will have to wear this”

“Less emissions means less fuel use. I think it is good that

everyone in the industry should clean their act and get

equipment that uses less fuel and produces less emissions.

The newer the truck, the more efficient it is.”

“The extra technology is always subject to

extra cost, in addition, does it really work by reducing strength of carbon emissions.”

“I think Euro 5 is a disaster, it makes everything more

expensive and higher fuel consumption which

again costs more.”

“It would increase fuel consumption because of high

operating temperatures, engine wear, complications for servicing and more chances for

problems. Greener not really leaner.”

“There are reasons for and against. I don’t

know how much it will achieve and how much

it will cost.”

“I don't know enough information about the new emissions standards. I also question the reliability of

the information I hear about this topic.”

“I am concerned about the effects on

reliability and additional

maintenance costs.”

“I was quite in favour, but now that it seems like we will receive no

compensation, my stance has moved to

the middle.”
