Sustainable Lighting Strategy The Key Factors

• Reduce all Roadway and Pavement lighting levels and ensure more targeted design

for both Roadway and Pavement lighting

• Ensure Parks and Public Realm projects are designed with suitable lighting for long-term

efficiency and quality for the environment and people

• Specify energy and optical efficient quality LED and other new low-energy technology

and appropriate controls for all uses

• Introduce Emirate-specific Performance Benchmarking system for and LED and new

technologies for external lighting

• Mandate Policy to include statutory brightness hierarchy and design guidance for all

external public lighting. Align with other AD documents e.g. Estidama

• Return maintenance of all road lighting back to asset owners (Municipalities, and DoT)

• Explore energy-saving and step-dimming systems for traditional technology high-mast road lighting. Maintain ongoing research analysis

How to specify LEDs for the Extreme Environment of the Middle East

What are the issues with LEDs for use in the Middle East?

• Temperature? Humidity? Dust? Sand? Corrosion? Performance? Drivers?

Answer is: QUALITY fixtures & lighting design address all the above

There are no issues in specifying LEDs for Middle East external use...if

• Correct technical LED Specifications are written and enforced • Correct lighting design criteria/standards/brief are issued • Consultant/Designers are required to Specify and Design correctly • Specifications and Standards are enforced through all project stages • Any ‘Equal & Approved’ submissions and/or value engineering is

monitored and controlled

LED Fixture efficacy

Whole Luminaire Efficacy: The optimum efficiency of the luminaire shall be confirmed as follows: Minimum luminaire efficacy shall be: ≥ 75llm/cctW (@min50-degC, min95%RH Which is given as Total Luminaire Design(Deliver) Lumen Output (llm) over Total Luminaire Circuit Watts(cctW) at minimum 50-degrees Centigrade Operating Outside Ambient Temperature and minimum 95% Relative Humidity. The efficacy being stated at minimum 50 Deg C (Greater than or equal to 75 llm/cctW) should be supported by a thermal test report for the luminaire. This report should provide percentage depreciation of light output at 50 Deg C from testing value of 25degreeC or 35degreeC. This can be compared with LM-79 efficacy at lab temperature from photometric report and de-rated. The effect on the driver case temperature at minimum 50degreeC should also be shown.

The Policy is being implemented by DMA/ADM through new stringent Lighting Specifications and tables of lighting design criteria have been written and being applied on all current and future projects. The Policy will be expanded into a comprehensive Abu Dhabi Sustainable Public Lighting CODE document to offer best practice design advice as well as standards and statutory criteria.




The Tables of New Lighting Strategy Reduced Roadway Illuminances

has been now issued under DMA Decree-39



All new Public Realm projects are being designed fully in accordance with the Lighting Strategy requirements on both ensuring balanced illumination levels and lighting quality of the designs



The Specifications have now become DMA Specifications and

officially issued under the DMA Decree-39 to cover the whole Emirate: All Municipalities, DoT and Developers have to adhere.

Al Salam Street Sustainable LED Lighting Installation

The roadway, tunnel and traffic signal lighting for the Salam Street project is all undertaken for the first time in the region utilizing LED technology throughout. This was undertaken as part of the DMA/ADM Sustainable Lighting Strategy to provide the best possible long-term sustainable lighting solution



The new roadway and tunnel lighting levels are approximately 60% lower across all road categories and the use of LED efficient long-life technology was implemented throughout for the first time in Abu Dhabi. Highly efficient lighting fixture optics were utilised to ensure light is focused only where it needs to be avoiding wasted light and reducing light pollution. This further maximizes the overall lighting efficiency of roadway lighting installations



Salam Street’s LED signals draw approximately 80% less power than traditional incandescent signals, last around 8-times longer and the loss of individual LEDs will not lead to a total loss of the indication, maximizing safety at intersections. The combination of the LED road, tunnel and signal lighting systems provides a virtually maintenance free installation for the whole of Salam Street; a solution that is now being applied throughout the city of Abu Dhabi



The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City’s Salam Street project recently won the prestigious Green Initiative Prize at the 2011 Gulf Traffic Awards as well as winning the Project of the Year Category at the 2012 Middle East Electricity Awards.

Sheikh Zayed Bridge Lighting

As part of the Abu Dhabi Gateway project, the new Sheikh Zayed Bridge has been lit with a sustainable long-term roadway and architectural lighting system to both enhance the form of the flowing structure, representing undulating sand dunes, but also is programmed with special scenes for occasions and importance dates within the UAE without ever needing to bring in and connect additional lighting equipment

Nominated for the 2012 Lighting Design Awards Best International Exterior Project



The lighting scenes comprise of dynamic coloured light that smoothly flows across the Maqtaa channel



A system of special targeted energy efficient roadway and architectural fixtures have been designed to avoid light spill, with light applied only where needed. The architectural lighting is able to produce any of 16 million colours with a DMX lighting control system to program and sequence the effects on the bridge and also ensure all effects are tuned off from 1am until dawn for maximizing the efficiency and lamp life of the installation
