The kick-off meeting of the Appear project-75 was held at the University of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) from the 14 th to the 19 th January 2013. An opening speech was done by the director of the faculty (UFR/SVT) Prof. Joseph Boussim, who welcomes the participants and developed the importance of antimalarial medicinal plants documentation through monographs. Prof. Boussim did thank the Austrian Cooperation and the APPEAR programme for financing the project and expressed the disposability of the faculty to support the project during his running period. All together 48 persons took part to the workshop including university authorities and academic people, personal from the ministry of scientific research and innovation, personal from the national malaria research and training centre, the national coordinator of Appear Susfish project, one invited guest from the Department of Primary Health Care at the University of Oxford, master and PhD students. During the first day of the workshop, a power point presentation untitled “Elements for a Burkina Faso national pharmacopoeia: monographs redaction and quality control of endangered antimalarial medicinal plants” was done by the project coordinator followed by another presentation “Les plantes et la malaria” held by Prof. Jeanne Millogo from university of Ouagadougou. The first coordination meeting was held the afternoon to discuss and improve the survey questionnaire and methodology. The second day public keynote on “Methodology for ethnopharmacology survey” and “reverse pharmacology and lessons from clinical trials” were done by Dr Willcox from Oxford University. Abstract of the Appear project-75 kick-off Workshop 14-19.01.2013 Abstract Kick-off Workshop Five workshop sessions were done the second day afternoon and the third day on the following thematic: “Sampling and Biostatistic using SPSS software” by Prof. Novak from Vienna “Management of Bibliographic references using Endnote software” by Mrs. Kiendrebeogo from Ouagadougou “Multivariate data analysis in plants research” By Dr Nacoulma from Belgium “Extraction and fractionation for antimalaria medicinal plants” and “Methods validation” by Dr. Lamien Meda from Vienna. During the fourth and the fifth days, a field trip was done at Banfora to visit the phytomedicines fabric PHYTOFLA of Dr. Zephirin Dakyo, and to meet also Dr Marc Olivier (Coordinator of the association “Nature and Culture” of Bobo Dioulasso) and the chief of the association of traditional medicine practitioners of the Haut Bassin region. A second field trip guided by Prof. Jeanne Millogo (university of Ouagadougou) was done the last day (Saturday) at the National Park Bangr Weogo of Ouagadougou. Besides introducing the project to the local authorities and the university, the kick- off workshop was a great opportunity for the students to get some biostatistics, ethnopharmacology and laboratory methodology knowledge's.
