Questions arising on this again .. is been discussed on this andother News Groups ever since I've been in this industry and Idoubt if it will ever go away because some folks depend on thehype of absorption as a tool for their marketing.

If one goes into the list Archive they will probably nd hundreds of posts on this subect .. a few I have written follow. !ome of themgo beyond absorption but the info still might be of some value ..and I would recommend you read them oldest rst ..

It is very easy to nd a lot of information on this or that subect inthe list Archive .. ust go to the main pagehttp022health.groups.yahoo.com2group2oils3herbs3etc2

&hen click on )essages .. in the left hand column. &hat takes youto a page where .. at the bottom .. you will see !earch .. andbeside it is Advanced .. click on that.

&hen in the Author block type in the name of some person whoposts a good bit on this list .. like %utch 6wen or Bhris Fiegler or)arge Blark or )arcia lston or )artin 8att .. or whoever.

In the !ubect block type in what you are seeking .. in this case ..Absorption .. and in the )essage %ody block use your noggin andsome imagination .. you might have to use that for the !ubectblock too because you might not hit pay dirt with the rst try ..but keep it up and eventually you will nd what you want.

&here is a big e(ception here .. that is .. those folks who writeposts that have !ubect lines like .. I Cave A Question or someother impossible le line .. their posts may never be found. &hat iswhy the Hist )om approved the following post some time back.

continue to send posts with !ubect lines like .. I Cave a Questionor I Need Kour 6pinion or some other subect that could apply toanything at all.

    Now we will see how accurate that unoJcial poll was. :";

I had to break out my Anatomy M @hysiology book and reviewsome of the lectures from this semester for this. Good thing I'mstudying for nalsright now anyway...

@araphrased, the skin's maor function ne(t to being a sensoryorgan; is as a %AI. It is designed to keep things out, not letthings in. It is an environmental, biologic and immunologic barrier.6f course, this applies to whole, healthy skin: damaged or inured

skin has had it's barrier function compromised and cannot keepthings out eOectively.

&he four layers of the skin %utch mentions in one of the posts helinked actually ve layers on palms and soles; make up theepidermis, or outer skin. ?ery little penetrates through all four ofthese layers. &here is N6 blood supply to the epidermis: the bloodsupply is deeper, in the dermis. !o very few things can reach theblood stream through healthy skin. !ome chemicals such as themethyl salicylate in 8intergreen or %irch oil and all those smellymuscle and arthritis rubs; are an e(ception, but most moleculesare either too large or not polar enough to penetrate completelythrough the epidermis. )ost don't even get completely throughthe outermost layer...

Inhalation is a much better route for chemicals to reach the blood.

@articles must be around one micron or smaller to reach thealveoli, the microscopic bubbles where gas e(change o(ygen forcarbonn dio(ide; occurs. )any of the aromatic molecules "carvacrol, linalool, geraniol, etc. found in 6's are much less than

one micron, and small enough enter the blood stream via thelungs. &his is why we don't diOuse 6 around cats9

&his is why A& is A6)A therapy not A%!6%A therapy: it iseOective through inhalation of volatile molecules ANE it alsoaOects the olfactory system via the odor receptor cells in thenose. &hese cells operate much like taste buds: when a certainclass of odor is detected it generates a signal that travels to thebrain. !cent is the only sense where the nerve bers go 7directly7to the brain specically the limbic system; which is believed to

be why smell is strongly linked to memory and emotion, and whypeople react diOerently to diOerent odors.

I don't have time to go deeper right now...e(ams start tomorrowand I need to get back to @harmBalc instead of AM@9

Interesting to have a pharmacy student here9 I work with apharmacist, and he is very knowledgeable. I bounce things oO ofhim from time to time, and I get an honest perspective from himthat I respect. It kind of bridges the gap between natural andmodern day medicine, Integrating it, where I think it should be9Hori

well you are accurate, they are compounding meds to be appliedlike pain meds in patch form, anti nausea in a gel etc.....and I

know I've overdone fo's when my mouth feels funny and mytaster is shot.....so I am careful.

Kou know, back in the 5-'s the chemial salesmen in the oileldhad very dangrerous e(posure to chemicals now banned.....myhusband was one of them.......you can't believe what he's had onhim almost daily and if it was on his clothing, even more......Inever wasehd his clothes with ours.....his was separate and then Iran the washer again with soap and let it go thru the cyclesbefore I ever washed anything else, the ne(t load would be

hi everyone....usually don't have time to do much more than lurk,

but this is a particular area of interest. I've read the posts, proand con for skin absorption, and lots of articles too. Cere is mye(perience.

In the Intensive Bare unit, I completed some small case studiesand pilot proects. 6ne involved the use of essential oils appliedtopically via the )"techniue a form of light touch2massagepioneered by Er. Dane %uckle.; on mechanically ventilatedpatients. In an intubated patient, there is no air ow in the nares.

     &o remove all doubt, with patients who were orally vs nasally;

intubated, I used the nasal clips that are used during pulmonaryfunction tests to block any airow into the nasal cavity. esults ofsymptom relief were achieved with pain relief,an(iety2restlessness and insomnia. &hese studies were done withand without essential oils to rule out the obviouslysoothing2positive eOects of touch and presence. )onitoring ofarterial pressures, central venous pressures, o(imetry and in onecase intracranial pressures were continous monitored andmapped before, during and after the treatment. &o make this

short, results wereconclusive, there was a statistically positive benet from thetopical use of essential oils in patients where the olfactory routewas basically eliminated. Interesting99

Now, in my hospice work, I am seeing more and more medicationsbeing applied topically in a @H6 gel, or mi(ed with mu oil as acarrier. !ome medications are so lipophilic, like fentanyl that Erugcompanies have capitaliPed on the molecular pharmacology andhave formualted transdermal patches. !oon, there will beavailable a fentanyl patch that is controlled by electrical current, similar to patient controlled analgesia I? pumps99 Cowever, thereare medications that theorectically should not be absorbedtopically, but can produce local and sometimes systemicsymptom relief.

not give the systemic eOect that the oral pill did. !o, for me,seeing is believing, even though the baclofen did not havesystemic benet, clearly it penetrated all layers producingpharmacologic eOects.

!o, my mind is much more open to the possibility thataromatherapy is much more than....aroma's99

Kes, medications can pass through the skin barrier, but with the

e(ceptionof the few that are naturally lipophilic like fentanyl, most reuirecompounding into carriers that are specically designed to beable to passthrough the skin's natural barrier. !o far, topicals and patches arelimited to a fairly small group of medication classes, althoughresearchcontinues and the applications are growing. &his is an area ofintense

research and development since it allows the medication tobypass the

barrier. &his is 7why7 such chemicals are banned, and whymodern lawsreuire in"depth to(icology studies. &he skin is not a perfectbarrier, but

it is designed to function as a barrier, not a sponge.

been doing aromatherapy all wrong. I've seen too much of theune(plainable, and there is simply way too much we do not knowabout the human mind, body and spirit.

6nly with e(ploration, continued sharing and studies will wegrow, and I am very e(cited to think about future develpments inknowledge and application.

T &hat being said, Aromatherapy is still ust that " Aroma therapy. It's 7main7 function is through the eOects of smells on the brainodor; and by the inhalation of the volatile molecules releasedfrom 6's, which can cross into the bloodstream in small amounts

and have a biochemical eOect. &hink of absorption as a lessersideline, if you will. 7)ost7 6's don't absorb more than skindeep: so physiological eOects from 6s are more likely to befrom the odor2inhalation pathways.
