Cleantech Demonstration Arena
– solar concentrators for
industrial heat and solar cooling
Concentrated solar energy :
the best choice in high irradiation regions
2
Solar Energy to supply the
majority of the world’s energy
in the future (IEA)
Desertec - €400bn to be
invested, 15% of Europe's
electricity demand
Large regions of the
world has high
direct radiation
• DNI 5,0 – 7,5
kWh/m²/day
• Regional variations
• Local variations
Concentrated solar energy for
medium temperature generation
• A number of European companies
are developing solar concentrators
for rooftop or ground mounting
4
Medium temperature – 16% of the
energy consumption in the industry
5
100°C-200°C a major part of the European energy
consumption, in Austria 10 TWh.
Energy consumption at different temperatures at
industries in Austria (Zahler, Z. 2007)

Medium Temperature Solar Concentrators:
Industrial Process Heat
• Chemical industry
• Food Industry (rice mill)
• Textile industry
• Steam production or
thermal oil

Climate Well Solar Absorption Cooling 1 (3)
• Two chambers – reactor
with salt and evaporator
with water
• Low pressure – the
water start to boil at
room temperature!
• Like a wet towel, when
the water is evaporating,
it requires energy and
drops in temperature.
8
Low pressure
Climate Well Solar Absorption Cooling 2 (3)
• As the water evaporate, the water container is becoming cold.
• The salt absorbing the water vapor is warm and need and the heat needs to be taken away e.g. to a swimming pool or pre-heating tap water.
9
25° C 7° C
Low pressure
Climate Well Solar Absorption Cooling 3 (3)
• When the salt has
absorbed all water, it
need to be
recharged.
• This is done by using
the heat from the
solar collectors
• The water in the salt
is pushed back to the
evaporator and the
system is ready to
start cooling again.

Solar Concentrator CPV/T installation
on a 50 room hotel in Pune
• 100 m2 CPV/T Solar Concentrators
• 5000 liter of 60°C hot water, enough to cover all hot water for showers, laundry, kitchen
• 10 kW of electricity to cover all lightning, TV, ventilation
16
• 2 500 000 rs investment
• 4 years payback time

Installation to provide a 60
room hotel with hot water
for showers and pool.
120 m2 X10 PV/T
12 kWp electricity
50 kWp hot water
Conclusion: Solar Concentrators for
Medium temperatures and PV/T
• Rooftop or ground mounted Solar Concentrators can
generate heat, hot water and electricity
• Many regions with high direct solar radiation is very
suitable for solar concentrators
• Solar concentrators are profitable both for process
heat and for hot water and electricity in buildings
