I hope all students and staff had a restful third term break and are enjoying being back into the routine of school. School Funding – Election Commitments Great news last week to have both the Labor and Liberal party commit to funding and the building the new school at Armstrong Creek for the beginning of the 2021 school year. On Tuesday 9 th October, Deputy Premier and Minister for Education James Merlino visited the school to announce that a re-elected Labor Government would allocate a further $34.5 million for the construction of the new Oberon High School at Armstrong Creek. This commitment of money was on top of the previously committed $6.4 million from previous state budgets. The announcement included a commitment that the money would be allocated in next years budget with the school to be relocated for the start of 2021 school year. On Thursday 11 th October, Liberal Leader Matthew Guy also visited the school to announce that an elected Liberal government would be matching the Labor commitment that had been made to the school. The announcements from the two political parties is great news for the school community and ensures that no matter which political party wins the upcoming State Election in November, the students attending Oberon and the staff members employed at the school will have access to the modern learning facilities that should be available to all. This includes a committed timeline, with the schools relocation from our current site at Belmont to the Armstrong Creek Education precinct in Warralily confirmed for the start of the 2021 school year. Thank you to all members of the school community who spoke to Politicians, wrote letters and posted on facebook feeds to ensure that the concerns of the Oberon community were heard. I will continue to provide the school community with any further updates as I hear about these. If you have any queries regarding this announcement and associated funding, feel free to call me at school to discuss. Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences It was great to see so many parents taking up the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss their childrens academic progress. The opportunity to celebrate the successes and discuss opportunities for further improvement are invaluable. If you were unable to attend or unable to see a particular teacher, I encourage you to make contact with the school to arrange this. Staff Changes We have a number of changes to our staffing for Term 4: Ms Elise Schultz joins Oberon replacing Mrs Sharon Jimmink-Scott who retired at the end of Term 3. Elise recently moved back to Geelong with her young family after previously spending many years teaching at Buckley Park Secondary College in Moonee Ponds. Recently I had the pleasure of taking four of our students (Mark Tresize, Teemu Brasier, Lockie Bath, and Ethan Zerafa) to see Minister Merlino open the new Tech School in Geelong just a couple of hours before he made the announcement that we have all been waiting for at Oberon. It was so good to see our students hold pride of place at this opening, as we were given our own room to showcase our innovative learning projects. These students all spoke very eloquently when speaking with the Minister and they all spoke with confident authority about the technology involved in their projects. There were many Principals and Teachers present at this event, and all were highly impressed with how our students communicated their projects and their level of knowledge that they had acquired. Year 12 student Mark Trezise was the main ‘student guide’, going about his role with absolute confidence and authority telling Minister Merlino to ‘hurry up’ when he was spending too much time in one area and where he was to go to next. Those who have taught or worked with Mark over his time at Oberon would have been very proud of the position that he held at this event. Watching him being recognised for his efforts on this day and having this honour of escorting the Ministers around the Tech School was the highlight of my career so far and payment for all of the hard work that we have put in over the years to ensure a successful outcome for him. I know that he and his parents are eternally grateful for all of the work our staff have done for him. Congratulations to all who have helped to secure a successful outcome for Mark. Another proud moment for Oberon.

Congratulations to one of our Writers’ Group members, Imogen Broadfoot from 8A, whose story, ‘The Secret’, won the Victorian Mental Health Month Writing Competition. The award ceremony was held at the Melbourne Town Hall and the award was presented by the Minister for Mental Health, Martin Foley and City of Melbourne Councillor and Mental Health Advocate, Beverly Pinder. The award aims to spread awareness of mental health in the Victorian community. We look forward to reading more of Imogen’s creative writing in the future!

We welcome Stefanie Franz, Max Weigl, Clara Goldbach, Hannah Seibel, Domino Appel, Lara Weidemueller, Anne Arndt, Max Beltz, Justin Foit, Emilie Schmidt and Viktoria Görge to our school. Oberon has also welcomed teachers Herr Lambmann and Herr Wagner to Oberon. Looking at the photos we can see that the German students have blended in well and are helping our students in German classes to improve their speaking skills and intercultural knowledge.

The Oberon group is part of the 35 students along with 3 teachers who arrived on Grand Final Day. The group has spent a week with their host families, have been on a 3-day tour of the Great Ocean Road and will visit Narana this week. Next Thursday it will be time to say goodbye and our students, planning to travel back to Germany next year will be looking forward to a reunion. Many thanks to the 12 host families who have opened up their homes for the students. Your care and assistance is greatly appreciated.

Sixteen students travelled to Aberfeldie Park to represent Oberon at the Western Metropolitan Track and Field Championships on the last Thursday of Term 3. Whilst most days that the schools athletics events have been conducted in recent years have been done so in wet or windy weather, not so this day. It was a perfect day for athletics. This year’s medal haul wasn’t quite as impressive as in previous years, as several regular medal winners were unable to compete due to illness, injury or being on the Indonesian trip. Despite this, nine students returned to Oberon with a medal in hand. Megan Dickson was the most successful Oberon athlete on the day, convincingly winning the Gold Medal in the Girls 14 Years 800m, and also won gold in a much tighter contest in the 1500m event. Amelie Parfitt was successful in winning medals in each of the three events in which she contested. She threw a personal best throw to win the 13 Years Girls Javelin and also won silver medals in the Shot Put and Discus events. We had great success with two competitors in the girls 12-15 Years 1500m Walk. The very aptly named Charli Walker won the Silver Medal and the younger Neeve Bakker-Graham managed to win the Bronze Medal.

WESTERN METROPOLITAN TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

In other events, Malaika Yenkeni won a Silver Medal in the 14 Years Girls Shot Put to go one better than her bronze in the same event last year. Our sole 4 x 100m relay representative team was in the 13 Years Boys’ race, where Riley Scoble, Liam Morrissy, Noah Sneskov and Lachlan Brown performed very well to win the Bronze Medal. Congratulations to Mackenzie Gorham (5th in the 18-20 Years Discus), Matt McGuane (4th in the 18-20 Years Javelin), Malaika Yenkeni (7th in the 14 Years Discus), Danny Houliston (10th in the 13 Years 1500m), Jorja Hilsdon (8th in the 15 Years Javelin), Bridget Brown (5th in the 14 Years 1500m) and Luke Brown (4th in the 17 Years 1500m). Unfortunately, Zoe McKinnon (15 Years Girls) injured herself whilst running the 800m. She managed to finish this event, however was unable to run in her more favoured 1500m event later in the day. We have three athletes who have qualified for the State Championships to be conducted at the State Athletics Centre at Albert Park on Monday October 22nd. Good luck to Amelie Parfitt (Javelin), Charli Walker (1500m Walk) and Megan Dickson (800m and 1500m). Thank-you to Ms Gill for her organisational assistance and for very capably driving the bus.
