DARRYL CUNNINGHAM THE CRASH

140 141

The Age of Selfi shnessAyn Rand, Morality, and the Financial CrisisDarryl CunninghamIntroduction by Michael Goodwin

Tracing the emergence of Ayn Rand’s philosophy of objectivism in the 1940s to her present-day in uence, Darryl Cunningham’s latest work leads readers to the heart of the global nancial crisis of 2008. Cunningham, author of How to Fake a Moon Landing, uses Rand’s biography to illuminate the policies that led to the economic crash, and how her philosophy continues to a ect today’s politics and policy. Tackling the complexities of economics by distilling them down to a series of concepts accessible to all age groups, Cunningham ultimately delivers a devastating analysis of our current economic world.

Just So Happens Fumio ObataYumiko was born in Japan but has made a life in London, losing herself in its cosmopolitan bustle. She has a gallery show of her art, a good job, and a good guy she plans to marry. The culture she grew up in seems very far away—until her brother phones with the news that their father has died. Yumiko returns to Tokyo and nds herself immersed in the rituals of death while also plunged into the rituals of life— sh bars, bullet trains, pagodas—as she confronts the question of where her future really lies. Just So Happens deals both gently and powerfully with grief, identity, and the pressure not to disappoint one’s parents, even a er they’re gone, in a look at the relationships that build the foundation of our lives.

Out of LineThe Art of Jules Feiffer Martha FayIntroduction by Leonard S. Marcus Foreword by Mike Nichols

Over Jules Fei er’s proli c 70-year career, his nimble and singular imagination has given us biting satires on politics, love and marriage, and the ids and raw terrors of American culture. That same sensibility has given us children’s stories of equal delight and insight, imbued with the author’s playful anarchism and illustrated with an exuberant line and explosive color. Fei er’s varied output includes children’s books, such as the beloved Phantom Tollbooth, plays, movies, and comics, most notably his Pulitzer Prize–winning Village Voice strip. Out of Line is the long-overdue illustrated retrospective of Fei er’s celebrated career, providing a revealing glimpse into his creative process by uncovering rare and never-before-published gems from his personal archive. 300 color and black & white illustrations 272 pages

Ghett o KlownJohn LeguizamoIllustrated by Christa Cassano and Shamus Beyale

In Ghe o Klown, celebrated performer John Leguizamo lays bare his early years in blue-collar Queens, his salvation through acting and writing, and his colorful career trajectory. He brings us onto the sets of his lms opposite stars such as Al Pacino and Patrick Swayze and with directors such as Baz Luhrmann and Brian De Palma, while also opening up about his o stage life in love and marriage. In this candid graphic novel memoir, Leguizamo o ers a strong message of moving beyond self-doubt—and beyond the doubters—to claim some happiness. Now, teaming up with artists Christa Cassano and Shamus Beyale, Leguizamo shares his life story in this vibrant, funny, and moving adaptation. two-color illustrations • 192 pages

Features rare and unpublished original art and development work by Charles M. Schulz—the only Peanuts book of its kind

Only What’s NecessaryCharles M. Schulz and the Art of Peanuts

Text, art direction, and design by Chip KiddPhotograhy by Geoff SpearIntroduction by Jeff KinneyAdditional text by Jean Schulz, Karen Johnson, and Paige Braddock

Charles M. Schulz (1922–2000) believed that the key to cartooning was to take out the extraneous details and leave in only what’s necessary. For y years, from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000, Schulz wrote and illustrated Peanuts, the single most popular and in uential comic strip in the world. In all, 17,897 strips were published, making it “arguably the longest story ever told by one human being,” according to Robert Thompson, professor of popular culture at Syracuse University. For Only What’s Necessary, renowned designer Chip Kidd was granted unprecedented access to the extraordinary archives of the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California. Reproduced here are the best of the Peanuts newspaper strip, all shot from the original art by award-winning photographer Geo Spear.450 color illustrations • 304 pages

Will EisnerChampion of the Graphic Novel Paul LevitzIntroduction by Brad Meltzer

Will Eisner (1917–2005) is universally considered the master of comics storytelling, best known for The Spirit, his iconic newspaper comic strip, and A Contract with God, the rst signi cant graphic novel. This seminal work ushered in a new era of personal stories in comics form that touched on adult topics from mortality to religion and sexuality, forever changing the way creators approached comics storytelling. Eisner went on to write and illustrate over twenty graphic novels, each pushing the boundaries of what comics could achieve. In this new monograph, noted historian and former president and publisher of DC Comics Paul Levitz celebrates Eisner by showcasing his most famous work alongside unpublished and rare materials from the family archives. Also included are original interviews with creators Jules Fei er, Art Spiegelman, Sco McCloud, Je Smith, Neil Gaiman, and more. 200 color illustrations • 224 pages
