NJASK QUESTION

In the United States, you do not have to be born into a wealthy, famous, or powerful family in order to become president. Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution lists only three requirements. The candidate must be at least 35 years old, must have been born in the United States, and must have lived in the country for at least fourteen years.

Past presidents have had varied backgrounds. Abraham Lincoln split fence posts and worked in a store before he became a lawyer and held elected office. Harry Truman was a farmer and a store owner. Woodrow Wilson was a college professor, and Ronald Reagan was an actor.

Is it still necessary for a president to be a natural born citizen?
