President's MessageLast week I felt as if I was on the top of the Himalaya Mountain after seeing the over

whelming response from the members & their family for the celebration of Awards which Midtown got. I was really moved with the good wishes from fellow Rotarians. It was a real surprise for me when Rtn. PP.M.S.Raghu & his team felicitated all the Board Members on the occasion. On behalf of the Board I sincerely thank PP Rtn.M.S.Raghu, Rtn. Harish, Rtn.Umesh & PDC Chandrika Madam for doing the honours. I immensely thank all the Rotarians & their family for making the day so colourful and special.

On 5th Tuesday we distributed some of the equipments which are required for giving training to students of National Association for Blind, Yadavagiri. I thank Rtn. Narendra of Vinyas for contributing the equipments.

Today it’s my pleasure to Welcome Prof. Dr.K.C.Belliappa, Retired VC of Rajiv Gandhi Central University at Arunachal Pradesh, to our club. He will talk on “Role of Media Today”

MIDTOWN’S HOUR OF GLORYWe are the best club in Dist. 3180 and each of us

Midtowner needs no confirmation of this fact. But the District Assembly ‘Aarohana’ held at Mysore Sports Club on the 26th and 27th of May 2012 only affirmed this fact to the rest of the world.

The Jubiliant Team

And our weekly meeting on the 30th was all about Midtown and the year that was. What was a regular weekly meeting was made into memorable evening by Rtn. Harish and company. Rtn. Raghavendra and Rtn. Venkatesh had called for a family dinner meet and wanted to use this platform to thank all contributors for making this a grand year which brought us so many laurels. But our dear Kulappa had other ideas and offered us a feast. A feast, not only for our stomachs, but also for our hearts and minds.

To start with, the meeting was a well attended one with more than 80% attendance and lots and lots of excitement in the air with many Anns and Annets in attendance. The joy and thrill was there on everyone’s face but was most evident and glowing on the faces of the President and Secretary.

The meeting started with the customary pleasantries. Rtn. A. Ganesh’s birthday was celebrated by cutting a cake. President started his address recollecting his 10 years in Rotary and thanked all those who were instrumental in making it a very memorable journey for him. He then made sure to recognize the efforts of his board members and chairmen of different projects who won accolades at the district by garlanding them individually. He made this event a little extra special with fresh jasmine garlands so that Rotarians could further thank their spouses for their support once they return home (?!). Hope made real good use of the Mallige Hoovu.

After these rituals, it was Harish and his team all the way. Kullappa, the unbeatable master entertainer to Midtown came out with his unique idea of felicitating the board members. It was preplanned as if it was a surprise. ‘From Raghu(MS) to Raaghu… 20 years and back to glory’ was the theme. Individual members in the team were suitable recognized by Harish and felicitated by none other than PP. Rtn. Raghu who took the club to

similar heights 20 yrs ago. Felicitation included a muslin type shawl, unique and made for the occasion trophy with “you have made us proud” engraved on it, garland, and chocolates. It was a group photo at the end which is to be archived in the showcase of Midtown.

It does not end there. President Raghavendra was made to sit on the hot seat and was made to face some difficult questions by the Amithab Bacchan of the day- Harish. And not able to give answer tricky questions he had cough out few bucks to the community service. That was an entertainment and everybody really enjoyed.

So the evening was really memorable for Raaghu and secretary Venky. Few members took the opportunity to express their appreciation to Raaghu, most notable being the one from PP. Nandoo who was full of appreciation to young Raaghu and was

immediately elevated to the position of PDG (Prospectivel District Governor) from Midtown. Ann Ashwini who was a proud lady among the audience was ecstatic of her hubby’s achievements and was sighing relief -finally he will be hers unless Raaghu takes Nandoo’s suggestion seriously. The AG Aacha Ashoka Kumara was really proud of Midtown’s achievements and part ic ipated in the celebrat ion event enthusiastically, released the bulletin specially done for

the occasion and gave away a few PHF Medallions. Finally the crowd dispersed for the sumptuous

dinner – and the gathering at the dinner was seen busy congratulating Raaghu’ s board members for the extraordinary achievement, Kullappa for the impressive entertainment, and the party will go on for days to come and culminate on June 30th when the president’s hosts his official dinner and from then on it will be ‘The Don’ Vishwa’s show.

DO WE REALLY LOVE? A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming

home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. "Mom and Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to ask. I have a friend I’d like to bring home with me." "Sure," they replied, "we’d love to meet him".

"There’s something you should know," the son continued, "he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us." "I’m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live." "No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."

"Son," said the father, "you don’t know what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own."

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief–stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn’t know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good looking or fun to have around, but we don’t like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren’t as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are. Thankfully, there’s someone who won’t treat us that way. Someone who loves us with an unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever family, regardless of how messed up we are.

Tonight, before you tuck yourself in for the night, say a little prayer that God will give you the strength you need to accept people as they are, and to help us all be more understanding of those who are different from us!!!

First place. Shot outside Kisumu, Kenya. Says Benson, “This photograph, of a little child trying to get fresh water for the family, is unpretentious and poignant and tells an important story. You know exactly the situation and are moved by the look of expectation in her eyes, as if she’s asking for help. It is an image you stop and look at, and that is the main criterion for good photography.”Darryl Brown, Rotary Club of Boulder, Colo., USA

2nd Place. Shot in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Says Benson, “Covered with mud, this group posed for their picture without trepidation. They were open and seemed happy. The decision to use black-and-white instead of color makes this photograph more dramatic and gives the viewer insight into these innocent children.” Zahid Hasan Moon, Son of Md. Abdur Rashid Talukder, Rotary Club of Sylhet New City, Bangladesh

3rd Place. Shot in Entebbe, Uganda. Says Benson, “The maze of bright blue umbrellas surrounds the graceful fountain in the center of the photograph. It’s almost as if it were a frame from an old Busby Berkeley film in which the dancers move in unison while the camera shoots them from above.”. Joe Otin, Rotary Club of Nairobi-East, Kenya
