President's MessageMy Dear Rotarians,

Bye till next week…..

Thank You

Last week we had Dr. Poornima.K. Murthy as our Guest Speaker. Her Speech regarding Stress Management was excellent. Her presentation was one of the best in this Rotary year. I thank Rtn. Rakesh Babu for bringing her to the club.

Friends Good News is that we have reached the Goal of 20,000 US$ towards TRF contribution. I immensely thank all the donors for making it happen.

Today let us lend our hands to the Mother Theresa Home for the differently able women.

She suggested few good motivational books to read; one of them being “Anatomy of Illness” by Norman Cousins. She emphasised on periodic Ayurvedic Therapies, laughter therapy and food. She gave a balanced diet program with a list of dos and donts. She said, “Whatever can be eaten raw, donot cook; whatever has to be cooked, donot fry; whatever has to be fried, donot eat.” She also told about steps in self-motivation-“listen to yourself”; “say to yourself: I have gotten through tougher situations”.

During her presentation she was requesting the audience to be interactive, so that the speech could be interesting. After she concluded the presentation, the audience began to ask her some pertinent questions on alcohol consumption etc. Rotarian K.B.Harish wanted to know the feedback from the Doctors of Allopathy present in the audience. Rotarian Dr.Prahlad reacted by saying, “Stress is an attitude. For the same situation one may react with stress and other may react with ease. Only such a person with negative reaction is one who gets stressed and chemical changes take place”. Rotarian

Bhanuchandran, analysed that Dr.Poornima Krishnamurthy must be a good Bharathanatyam artiste too alongwith a vocalist and related himself to the attributes while proposing vote of thanks in a unique manner.

On the whole the evening was well spent; the powerpoint presentation well prepared; Well chosen words when she spoke; Perfect countenance for a speaker; well rehearsed stance, gestures, voice intonation through the mike and without also; so aptly dressed in a Barbie pink Mysore Chiffon with gold squares on it... Her brother, a percussionist and her sister-in-law accompanied her to the venue, shot the whole lecture on a video camera. Her own coping capabilities, she said, “I take deep breaths when stressed”. For such a perfect speaker, wish she had spoken on a more specific topic such as - "Food and Nutrition/Satvik Ahaar in Ayurveda" or "Satvik Lifestyle/Ayurvedic Way of Life" or some other topic specific and more relevant to her area of studies and research... YEH DIL MAANGE MORE!!!

Dear friends, Well, finally Sachin has

done it!!! The milestone which eluded him for more than a year has been conquered. What an amount of stress this “god of cricket” underwent during last 1 year! But what is special is he didn't buckle under pressure. When the century was not coming, not for

once did he lose his focus. To put it in his own words “There is one thing I say with utmost confidence that I will get 100 out of 100 when it comes effort and commitment. Scoring and not scoring run will always be part of the career but what matters at the end of the day is whether I have put in the best effort'. I think

that is the moral of story -give your 100%, come what may, and result will automatically follow.

This event I have been closely following for last few months. But unfortunately when it did happen I was at Sondhe, a remote place in North Karnataka and practically I was cut off from the outer world (no mobile network coverage, no access to TV). Hence I missed the once in life time opportunity to celebrate. Sachin will definitely play few more glorious innings before he retires from the game which he breathes, lives. And I consider myself to be lucky for living in an era when a legend like SACHIN played cricket.

Whereas Sachin celebrates the triumph, another equally talented player Yuvraj battles with cancer with equal determination and focus. Completes his chemotherapy and raring to go.... With Virats, Rainas, Rohiths, blazing their guns can Yuvi find his foot again in Indian team. If he does that it will be no less an incredible tale.. All the best YUVI!!!

History of the Rotary FoundationI n 1917, RI President Arch C.

K lumph proposed that an endowment be set up “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.

Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to “hold,

invest, manage, and administer all of its property . . . as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI.”

Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into the Easter Seals.

The Great Depression and World War II both impeded the Foundation's growth, but the need for lasting world peace generated great postwar interest in its development. After Rotary's founder, Paul P. Harris, died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.

That year, the first Foundation program – the forerunner of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships – was established. In 1965-66, three new programs were launched: Group Study Exchange , Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants .

The Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants program was launched in 1978, and Rotary Volunteers was created as a part of that program in 1980. PolioPlus was announced in 1984-85, and the next year brought Rotary Grants for University Teachers . The first peace forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the Foundation's peace and conflict studies programs .

Throughout this time, support of the Foundation grew tremendously. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, it has received contributions totaling more than $1 billion. More than $70 million was donated in 2003-04 alone. To date, more than one million individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows – people who have given $1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that amount contributed in their name.

Such strong support, along with Rotarian involvement worldwide, ensures a secure future for The Rotary Foundation as it continues its vital work for international understanding and world peace
