OVERVIEW

SchoolsUniversidad de los Andes has nine schools: Business Administration, Architecture and Design, Arts and Humanities, Science, Social Sciences, Law, Economics, Engineering, and

Medicine. It also has two centers that offer postgraduate programs: the Center for Research and Development in Education (CIFE) and an Interdisciplinary Center for Studies on Development (CIDER). Likewise, Universidad de los Andes has the first private school for public affairs, The Alberto Lleras Camargo School of Government, a tribute to a former president of Colombia, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS),

and also a former president of our university.

Doctoral ProgramsApart from the 18 doctoral programs, of which five are in areas of Engineering, Universidad de los Andes has 38 Master’s programs and 31 undergraduate programs. It also offers 39 post-graduate specialization programs. 22 of the 31 undergraduate programs (71%) have already been accredited by Colombia’s National Accreditation Council (CNA), and four programs are up for re-accreditation. Five of Uniandes’ most recent programs are either seeking CNA accreditation for the first time or they still don’t have an alumni cohort, which is a requirement to apply for accreditation.

“I Want to Study” (Quiero Estudiar) Scholarships875 students have benefited from these scholarships that reward students with excellent academic achievement, who cannot afford quality higher education. The fund seeks to become a patrimonial fund that will benefit up to 1.200 students on a permanent basis.

THE HISTORY BUILDING A NEW NATION

Universidad de los Andes was founded on November 16th, 1948

by a group of young men under the leadership of Mario Laserna Pinzón. It was the first private higher education institution in Colombia that was non-denominational and independent from traditional political parties, as well as from social or economic power groups. It was precisely due to these characteristics, that Universidad de los Andes was able to propitiate a visionary and avant-garde educational program, at a historical moment in Colombia, in which other private universities were

bound by political strife.Within this historical context, according to Francisco Pizano de Brigard, one of the founders and former president of the university, “Universidad de los Andes’ birth did not just spring from the desire to found another university, or from a purely educational interest, but from the intention of building a new country with the purpose of shaping and educating the new generations for a new nation.”This is the reason why Universidad de los Andes’ purpose continues to be that of providing a high quality education that will help to close the knowledge gap between Colombia and the latest and most advanced scientific knowledge available in the world. From its onset, Universidad de los Andes established agreements with the universities of Illinois, Pittsburgh, and Texas so that its students could study abroad. This was a very innovative program at that time. With this vision – that would later be adopted by other Colombian universities as well – Universidad de los Andes began its work in 1949 with seven programs, 79 students, and 16 professors.

Page 5: About Uniandes

Universidad de los Andes is an autonomous, independent, and innovative institution that fosters pluralism, tolerance,

and respect for ideas. It aims for academic excellence while providing rigorous critical and ethical character development, in order to enhance in all students an awareness of their social and citizenship responsibilities, as well as a firm commitment to the society. The university’s student body, in an environment of interdisciplinary and flexible integral character development, becomes the chief agent of the educational process. A highly skilled, knowledgeable, and prestigious faculty facilitates the development of an outstanding academic and professional life project that supports research, contributes to the development of the country, and transcends its geographical boundaries.
