Teens have designs onnew skatepark

Over 20 Thetford BMX riders and Skaters of mixed agesand experience spent time helping to design their idealBMX/Skate Park.

After a constructive question and answer session withyouth worker Paul Stancliffe and project manager SteveJames, the original Gravity design was shared with thegroup and they added their own design elements to it.

Gravity Engineering have been designing andengineering innovative skate parks for communitiesacross the UK for the last decade. But they’re alsopassionate skaters and riders with professionals on theteam who know what makes a cutting edge skate park.

The design team have already looked at the suggestionsfrom the teens and are hopeful that they can get closeto what they have suggested.

What is most impressive is the attitude of all whoattended. The skaters and BMXers are passionate aboutthis and are committed to ensuring it is a safe, enjoyable, well managed facility.

Steve James said; “We all want this to be a BMX/skatepark destination for Thetford people to come and enjoy,”

“That was our goal,” Paul Stancliffe said. “We wantedthe Thetford skate community to be a part of it. We don’twant to build a park, and they go there and say, ‘This isrubbish.’ We want them to go there and say, ‘Hey, welike this because we helped to design it.”

It is hoped that work will start on the skatepark nextmonth and it will open Summer 2012. You can follow theprogress of the skatepark build and leave your commentsand ideas at facebook.com/thetfordskatepark.

Deben was the venue for the second round of theSuffolk Summer League at the end of May.

Thetford Dolphins arrived as the fourth place team with43 events of either 50 or 100m distance in the day'stimetable. There are many congratulations to give for theefforts given on the day. Dan Collins continued his recordbreaking with new club records in the 13 and under agegroup: 100m Backstroke with a time of 1.14.11 and100m free in 1.05.18.

Almost half the Personal Best times on the day were fromthe 10 and under age group and for some it may havebeen their first time competing.

Breckland Cats ProtectionTel: 01842 810018

Kitten season is in full swing now. We are beinginundated with calls from people finding 1, 2, 3,or even 7 kittens in their gardens. We have 27kittens in care and 15 adults.

It puts a tremendous pressure on us and all becauseirresponsible people have moved and left theirunneutered cats behind or others who have just notbothered to get their cats neutered. We know people areselling kittens or even giving them away but pleaseremember that our kittens are blood tested, vaccinated, wormed, flead and micro chipped and we also providevouchers towards the cost of neutering.

The kittens from unknown sources could be incubatingall sorts of diseases and are invariably not vaccinated oreven wormed and could cost you a lot of money in vet’sbills or sadly die quite young.

Please remember we are all volunteers fostering in ourown homes and gardens and if we are full we cannotalways help straight away. If you know someone whosepoor cat is having one, two or three litters a year pleaseencourage them to contact us for help with neutering. Itreally isn’t fair to the mother cat to be used as a breedingmachine.

Little Jessie is only just over one year old and is veryplayful and fussful. She is looking for a home for lifewhere she can settle in and be loved and cared for.Jessie is neutered, micro chipped, blood tested, wormedand flead. Can you offer her that forever home?

Page 16: About Thetford

About SingingThetford Voices, the singing wing of Thetford MusicProject, has been flying this month: not only busy, but taking its wares around and about.

We enjoyed contributing to the ceremony on 16th Juneat which Thetford Garden Centre unveiled its extension, our programme of appropriate songs bringing roses, cherry trees, a cuckoo and even a hungry caterpillar (notThe Hungry Caterpillar) under the new roof. All these, andmore, were in evidence again the following Sunday whenthe group entertained informally al fresco in Bridge Streetduring the Thetford Open Gardens event.

The focus then switched from horticulture to sport whenJohn Weeks and Polina Sosnina embarked on a four-venue Olympic Workshop tour. Already enjoyed by pupilsof three Thetford Junior Schools in March, the Workshopvisited St Martin at Shouldham CE VA Primary, Diss CornHall, and Great Hockham and Norwich Road Schools.

Built around three original compositions, the Workshopgave participants the chance to celebrate the Torch Relay, the English back story to the modern Olympic games, andthe Olympic spirit, in songs variously performed and actedout. Incidentally, our closing number ‘The Spirit of theGames’ was arranged by established composer and

conductor James Weeks, whose professional vocalensemble EXAUDI is one of the contributors to thenational Olympic project ‘New Music 20x12’. And thesong itself has gone (very) mildly viral with scheduledperformances from Taplow Boys Choir, Willington Schoolin Wimbledon and our own Admirals Junior School.

Finally, a reminder that we are now taking bookings forour Thetford Festival Meeting Up (Thursday 30 August)and The Ups and the Downs, our two day summersinging workshop on 14th & 15th August.

While Meeting Up includes sessions for parents andtoddlers and budding Ukulele players, the general focusis on 6-16 year olds with songs specially chosen forchildren and young people. Our two-day event has oversix years proved attractive for families on staycation inand around Thetford while the timings of sessions (9.30- 3.45 on day one, and 1.30 - 7.45 with a closing concerton day two) could also work well for visiting grandchildrenwith days to fill in Breckland. Pick up a leaflet at theLibrary or Leaping Hare. Join us for a good holiday sing.

What’s a KAKI?Several times a week I am asked thequestion what’s a kaki? It’s actually a CACI(pronounced kay-see) and it stands forComputer Aided Cosmetology Instrument.

This piece of equipment was designed by a doctorand first used in the 1980’s to treat facial palsy. Ituses tiny micro current electrical impulses to theeffected muscles and was discovered to be sosuccessful at toning the muscles that the skincareindustry wanted to use it and so the doctor teamedup with what we know today as CACI international.

As we grow older our facial muscles naturally startto lose tone and elasticity. Genetics, lifestyle, weightfluctuation and environmental factors can allinfluence the rate and degree to which our muscleswill lose their tone as we all know first impressionscount and a sagging face can make you look tired, miserable and older than your years. Following over20 years of research and development CACIInternational can now offer a non-surgical solutionto combat loss of muscle tone using CACI microcurrent facial toning therapy.

Today this proven technology is known as a painlesscosmetic treatment and is commonly referred to as“facial toning” or “the non-surgical face lift”.

During each 1 hour treatment session all 32 facialmuscles are gently manipulated and re-educatedby a trained therapist using a series of precisemovements. Soft cotton tipped wands are used onthe face to transmit the micro-current energy to thefacial muscles to restore tone and elasticity.

Results are visible after the very first treatment buta course of twelve treatments is generallyrecommended.

After a course of CACI facial toning treatmentsfacial contours will look lifted and toned.

A monthly top up treatment is recommended tomaintain results.

With millions of people marking the Queen’s DiamondJubilee over the long June bank holiday, it was only rightthat we gathered as a town and community to enjoy thecelebrations together. Thetford Town Council organiseda free event with a fun-packed schedule in order to markHer Royal Majesty’s 60 years of reign.

The day began with a Civic Parade in the morning, leading to a special service at St Cuthberts Church, attended by visitors from Thetford’s twin towns inHolland, Germany, France and Poland. Mid-morning theMarket Place hosted a street party with pre-bookedtables. A 50s DJ set the scene and stilt walkers dancedwith everyone, whilst Ellie from Fantasy Faces paintedfaces till her arms ached! Magician Mark Jeffries addedto the entertainment and the great atmosphere. We werealso very lucky to be treated to a little music from NorfolkBrass, courtesy of Thetford Festival & ConcertCommittee, who then led everyone to Melford Commonfor an all-day concert.

Crowds flocked to the Common for a day of live music, afun-fair and refreshments. The stage showcasedperformances from local talent including Madison, G IJoe, Spring, .1 Normal, Franko Fraize, DJ Haward Feeland Straight From The Horse’s Mouth. The concert was

hosted by Adrian Askew Entertainments and the superbheadline act was Gary Mullen & The Works with OneNight of Queen.

Corinne Fulford, one of four main organisers of the event, said, “Today was organised by Thetford Town Council forthe Diamond Jubilee in order to bring the town residentstogether for the day. It couldn’t have happened withoutthe support and endless work of many volunteers, TownCouncil staff and local companies and agencies that havehelped to make it such a success”.Flags were wavingand ice-creams were being handed out to the familiesand residents. It was delightful to see everyone beingpatriotic and proud of their Queen. Of course, thesunshine added to the buzzing atmosphere. “I’m sorelieved about the weather, having been so behindbecause of yesterday’s rain”, said Corinne. “It could havereally affected the attendance but the sun is shining andeveryone is happy”.

When the concert came to a close at 9:45pm, everyonegathered on Castle Park to see the lighting of the officialDiamond Jubilee Beacon on top of Castle Hill and amarvellous firework display. One might even say theday’s events were “fit for a Queen”!

Two Jubilees at one time! Spijkenisse, a town with about75,000 inhabitants is the twinning town of Thetford (GB)and Hürth (Germany).

A long time ago we got the invitation to visit Thetfordbetween 1st and 5th June 2012 because of bothcelebrations.

With a delegation of 11 persons (include our Mayor Mrs.Salet) we were the guests of your town. Also there wereguests from Hurth (Germany), Les Ulis (France) andSkawina (Poland).

It was a wonderful time. Although the weather wasn’t sogood (only on the Monday the sun was shining), it wasvery nice to be there. We slept in houses of our hostsand they brought us everywhere. Invitations from theTown Council, Church and Twinning were there. Wevisited concerts and the firework display, we had a lot todo !

Also we spent the evenings together in King’s House,Riversdale and The United Reformed Church. It wasgreat to be at the party on the market place on Monday;there was music, people danced in the street and therewas a very great lunch together.

On Tuesday we went home full of impressions and goodfeelings.

I would like to thank the people of Thetford for theirhospitality, especially the Mayor, the Town Councils andlast but not least the members of the twinning.

Thank you we were there.Peter van Aken, Spijkenisse The Netherlands

Queensway Infants and Nursery School and QueenswayCommunity Junior School celebrated the DiamondJubilee together with a special morning of activities anda picnic party.

Children at Queensway Community Junior School haddesigned four gardens during a fantastic grounds weekbeginning the 18th June, including a wildlife area. Somechildren were hosted by Thetford Garden Centre in theirkind donation of plants to the school.

Queensway Community Junior School now has a greatre-developed amphitheatre, a dedicated bird hide andareas of different habitats within the wildlife area torepresent such things as a conifer forest and a hazelcoppice. The children helped build a willow shelter withlocal artist Maggie Campbell, a greatly improved resourceto benefit all of our children.

The climax of a morning’s celebration activities being theopening of the Jubilee Wildlife area by two long-servingand esteemed governors, Elsie Coleman, Chair ofgovernors and Pat Balaam, a premises governor.

Children had made union jack kites and costumes fromrecycled materials as the Junior school children havebeen focusing on ecological issues during the term.

So there we have it! A right royal ecological celebration– fit for a queen who has served our beloved country for60 years!

Flying high with 1109 ATC’s Youth Day SuccessOn Sunday 3rd June the 1109 Thetford Squadron of theAir Cadets held their third annual family fun day atKilverstone Park, and once again the event was buzzingwith excitement. Various local charities and organisationswere there to support the fundraising, with stalls from theEast Anglian Air Ambulance, the Model Flying Club andWretham Plant Centre.

The day began with an opening parade followed bynumerous shows in the main arena, such as the veryenergetic Zumba session by Zumba Lou Lou. Meanwhile, the Bands stage hosted back-to-back performances toshowcase local talent, including Charley, Sancho Blanco, and Straight From The Horse’s Mouth.

Norwich Road School Samba Band played during the day,Thetford Rugby Club provided the tug of war, and as withprevious years Zoo-Tastic, the mobile petting zoo thatallows visitors to hold various animals, was a very popularattraction. Pizza, sweets and other refreshments wereavailable alongside the fun activities.

Unfortunately the rain didn’t hold back, causing somechanges to the acts in the main arena and, sadly, the fun-fair and bouncy castle also had to pack up early, but thebad weather didn’t dampen the spirit of the visitors andthe fun and games continued throughout the afternoon.

In previous years 1109 have raised around £2,000 fromthe event, with over 1,500 visitors, and are hoping to putthis year’s money towards electronic equipment includingmuch-needed laptops for the Cadets.

Michaela Sears, who helped organise the event said, “I’mreally happy with the whole day, including the turnout, considering the weather conditions and the other eventstaking place this Jubilee weekend. I hope to see everyoneagain next year on the 26th May, when we’ll be makingthe day even bigger and better”.

Hi Gardeners! We are now in July, but everything hasbeen so slow this year and our produce is taking its timeto ripen. The ground did not warm up until late in the year, which delayed everything.

We should look out for pests now, as Asparagus beetlesare having a field day at the moment, as well as the lilybeetle, and you should check for black fly on the broadbeans, and green fly on the roses. Net your cabbages frompigeons, and check for white butterfly eggs on the backof cabbage leaves, that alone will keep you busy.

July is the height of the summer, days are long andtemperatures should be high, but we can only pray.

This month we should be able to harvest onions, shallots, peas a little at a time, broccoli and beetroot a root at atime, plus the first of the new potatoes and French beans.Carrots and pointed cabbages, tomatoes and cucumbersand peppers should be ready to eat.

Keep planting lettuce, radish, turnips and of course keepweeding, weather permitting as they will continue to growmuch faster than the produce.

Some fruits will be ripening about now too, including blackand red currants, gooseberries, strawberries, andblackberries.

Did you know there are some flowers we can eat too, forexample Calendula, or pot marigold, borage, chives, nasturtium, courgette flowers, and lavender. These are buta few that you could perhaps put in your salad, or evenmake your drink look pretty too.

A few tips for you to do this month. Pinch out the tops outof runner beans, as they have no idea when to stop, sowhen they get to the top of your canes, pinch out the top.

On your tomato plants, keep taking out the side shoots,

so that they do not go too bushy. You will then get moreflowers which produce the tomatoes. Feed the plants witheither Tomorite or, as I do, liquid seaweed.

If like me, you are being plagued with slugs and snails, think about using slug pellets. I do not like to use pellets, but am having to this year as they are eating everything Ihave planted.

Now, I hope you all have been purchasing water butts tobeat this hose pipe ban? I have installed 2 extra butts inmy garden for that very purpose. They are not veryglamourous, but serve a purpose, and with ourchangeable weather they have not been empty yet.

Don't forget allotmenteers, that this is Judging month, sokeep those plots up to scratch and anyone who locksthem up, remember if you want them to be judged thenmake sure they are unlocked on the day.

Well that is all for this month, so happy gardening!

That's all for now, but if you need any advice, pleasecontact me on: 07867974544, or email [email protected] Bye for now Yvonne.

Gardening with Old Grandad

Hello Boys and Girls, July is usually a very hot monthand you will all be thinking about your summerholidays, but when you go away don't forget about yourplants. If you have a family friend who are at homewhile you are away ask them to keep watering yourplants, a good thing the hose pipe ban is now over soit makes it easier for them to keep your plants watered.

This month the sun will come out at last, and hopefullythe soil will at last warm up and all the flowers thatshould be bursting into bloom giving us all somethingto smile about. I now want to go back to June, the timeof our Summer show, Roses and Sweetpeas, it was afun day and four of our young exhibitors won prizes fortheir scarecrow heads, Leonard Harper and VinnieSquires came joint first, and Maddy Harper and PoppyHarper came joint second.

In this picture you cansee Leonard and Vinniecollecting their prizes.Leonard then went on towin our numbers boardthe prize donated byThetford Garden Centre. He walked away with£25 worth of vouchers Ihope he spends themwisely.

At the other end of the scale a lovely man who growssweetpeas, and has been doing so for many years wenthome with two cups, as he has done for as long as Ican remember. Jim Calver is 97 next birthday, I hope

I am still going to shows if I reach that age, it showsthat gardening and being outside in the fresh air isgood for you no matter what the weather.

Some good news has reached me, my son and his wifehave gave the good news that they will be having ababy boy in October, wonderful news can't wait to gethis hands in the earth. I had to laugh when I was toldabout my granddaughter Kirra, apparently she walkedindoors and handed her big sister a big slimy slug thescreams were heard across Thetford, Kirra is going tobe a gardener. Well that's all for now, stay safe andwell, next month I will tell you about my attempts atgrowing vegetables for the show bench. Old grandad.

A new touring exhibition for Norfolk will feature the work of 90 Thetford school children. At thebeginning of the year schools were invited to join in a project to explore the county’s links withNorth America. Over 150 children from 10 Norfolk schools joined children from the local USAFschools to create this unique exhibition. The exhibition covers a diverse range of subjects fromPochahontas, Abraham Lincoln to Jimmy Stewart.

The children aged between six and eleven worked with staff from the Norfolk Museum and Archaeology Service,Norfolk Record Office and Norfolk Library Service, lead by Learning Officer Melissa Hawker based at the AncientHouse Museum of Thetford Life. “This was a challenging project requiring the children to have excellent group workand historical enquiry skills as well as an ability to write concise informative text. Even the youngest child exceededmy expectations and rose to the challenge. The project shows just how much children are capable of when they areengaged in their local history.”

The children worked with a professional graphic designer to display their research and ideas on the ‘pop up’ panels.Accompanying the panels, books of the children’s research and activities will be on display.

Children from Norwich Road School concentrated on local hero and writer Thomas Paine, working in partnershipwith Feltwell Elementary School. They looked into his life and the legacy that he left behind.

Speaking about the experience on their school website, children from Feltwell Elementary said “Melissa and ourteachers were very keen to mix the two schools together,so we played a game to mix us up. However, we werequite cunning and, to their bewilderment, after the gamewe were nearly all together with our own school. Wedidn't foil the adults for long as they soon put us intogroups which contained a mixture of pupils from bothschools. We were then given some things to discuss inour groups about rights and privileges.” “We were shownhow people in the C18th would have made quills to writewith. Of course, this is how Thomas Paine would have

Thetford Grammar School joined in with QueenswayJunior School and Liberty Intermediate School fromRAF Lakenheath. They looked at WW2 and the friendlyInvasion – GIs.

Page 35: About Thetford

£5,000 to Grow the Game Local people in Thetford will be putting on their bootsfollowing a £5,000 Grow The Game Grant, from theFootball Foundation, the country's largest sports charity.

The grant will allow Thetford Bulldogs Fc to achieve theirnext level of the charter mark, and become adevelopment football club; we will be taking children fromthe age of 4-7 in our training school and create our U8'seach season.

We are also hoping to start a girls U16's team, all ourcoaches at Bulldogs are FA Level1 and CRB checked. Allour volunteer coaches give up a lot of time. And we willalso be sending 2 of our coaches on their Fa Level2.

The core objective of the football foundation's grow thegame's programme is to increase participation andenable more people to play our national game throughsupporting the development of grassroots clubs. Theprogramme is delivered in partnership with all of the 46county FA's and funded by the FA and government.

So far grow the game has awarded 894 separate grantsworth £4,354,926 to grassroots football clubs. Analysisof the monitoring and evaluation so far predicts that thiswill result in the creation of 3,716 brand new footballteams competing in FA-affiliated leagues, 70,489 newplayers participating each week and 14,111 newqualifications or courses being completed.

The key strength of Grow the Game is that itsparticipation increases are sustainable rather thattransient. It's grants create a solid infrastructure of teamsand newly-trained coaches in which new people can startplaying sport, rather than simply providing temporaryactivity sessions, which are then vulnerable to drops inparticipation once the programme ends.

The Football Foundation is the country's largest sportscharity, launched in 2000 and funded by the premierleague, the FA, and the government (via Sport England).Since then it has awarded around 8,000 grants worthmore than £420m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership fundingof over £520m.

Kirsty Turner Club Secretary said that all at ThetfordBulldog's will be so pleased that we have achieved this

funding, as we all have worked so hard to get this extrafunding, this will help grow our club and achieve whatwe are aiming for, this will also help us to get to our nextlevel of the charter mark. A massive Thank you to all atFootball Foundation and Grass Roots for giving us thisfunding.

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the FootballFoundation, said."I congratulate Thetford Bulldogs FC forreceiving this grow the game grant, which will increasesport participation and support football development inthe region. I would like to take this opportunity to thankthe Norfolk County FA for their help in making thishappen. The new teams and players generated by Growthe Game scheme, since its launch three years ago willgo a long way towards helping the FA to achieve itsgrowth target of 150,000 new participants by 2013. It isalso helping government Sport England get more peopleengaging in regular sport.

"The Football Foundation is committed-with fundingprovided by the premier league, the FA and government-to improve grassroots community sporting provision andmake this legacy vision to reality."

Thetford Community AlcoholAction Group

Police in Thetford are working closely with partnersto launch a project that aims to raise alcoholawareness.

The project will initially focus on street drinkers in thetown and providing work place alcohol awarenesssessions.

The Thetford Community Alcohol Action Group, part ofThetford Healthy Town, launched the scheme last month.

The scheme draws together Norfolk Constabulary, NHSNorfolk, Norcas, Mathews Project & KeystoneDevelopment Trust/Meta.

Police Officers, specialist alcohol workers andtranslator/advisors from Keystone will engage withpeople drinking in the streets, advising them of thepotential impact on others as well as providing healthinformation.

Chief Inspector Paul Durham said: "Team work is alwaysthe best approach. Norfolk Constabulary recognise thatalone we cannot tackle all the issues. I am delighted thatwe can actively support this project.

"Local officers work hard to engage positively withindividuals street drinking, giving words of advice andtaking further action if necessary. This partnershipapproach will help us to develop more long-term,sustainable solutions to the issue.”

Neil Stott, Chief Executive of Keystone Development Trustsaid: “This is an important project and a fantasticdemonstration of local agencies working quickly andeffectively to tackle an issue which concerns localpeople. We aim to build a relationship with peopledrinking in the streets, understand their situation andprovide appropriate support services if required. We willalso ensure they understand that sometimes having agood time in public does impact on others.”

Local employers will be invited to join with a projectaimed at increasing alcohol awareness in the workplace.Free sessions will be delivered by Norcas in associationwith NHS Norfolk Health Trainers.

The next public meeting of the Safer Thetford ActionGroup will be on Thursday 12th July at the Guildhall,Marketplace, from 7pm. At this meeting, residents willhave the chance to help influence local policing prioritiesas well as chat to officers and partner agencies face-to-face and hear what’s being done to keep your communitysafe. Anyone unable to attend the meeting can contacttheir SNT on 101.

Thetford Foodbank was launched in December 2011 asa Thetford Christians Together Community Project. Thepeople of Thetford have been amazing in their supportand have donated a total of nearly 4 tonnes of non-perishable, tinned and longlife food.

Thetford Foodbank is one of over 200 Trussell TrustFoodbanks in the country, supplying emergency food tothose in need. Ali James, Thetford Foodbank Managersaid that delayed benefits, job losses and low income aresome of the reasons people need this service. A coupleof large bills in a month, or an illness affecting work cancause major problems for a family”.

“Since opening at Liberty Christian Family Centre atKelvin Place, we have received referrals for, and supplied3 days worth of emergency food to 221 people (155adults/72 children) in crisis. That’s a total of 2.9 tonnesof food from the community, for the community. Anemergency food supply for 3 days for a small familyweighs approximately 28kg.

Working along side our local Salvation Army, we can alsohelp with food aid to the homeless and rough sleepersvia John Room House”.

People are referred by third party agencies (socialservices, sure start, CAB, housing support, Job CentrePlus, Age concern, SNAP and many others).

All the food is donated, but we must keep our store wellstocked so we can respond quickly to help those in need.
