Pastor Keith

For 2018, I will be preaching a “through the Bible” series. Jesus said, "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. (John 12:32 NIV)". That will be the goal of the series. Each week we will look for Jesus. It may be an actual presence, a foreshadowing, lineage or mystery of faith that tells us of Jesus, but we will seek to lift up Jesus each week. Along with the sermon that will follow the week’s readings, there will be a devotional thought in a blog, Monday - Friday. The blog can be found at KeithChanley.blogspot.com I invite you to read along through the Bible and join in discussion through the blogs. Each month the newsletter will contain the next month's reading plan. January's reading plan is in this newsletter. It is a five day plan each week with five chapters to be read each day. The plan begins January 1. Let us lift up Jesus.

I would like to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, gifts and well wishes during Pastor Appreciation month. It means a lot to me.

The first Sundays of February, March, May, June, August, September, November & December are Zoar’s months to conduct the worship service at The Waters of Huntingburg. Suzie & Steve Hemmer lead the worship and would love to have several from the congregation join them. The time spent singing and greeting the residents that come means a lot. The service starts at 2:30 and lasts about 30 minutes. Our next opportunity for ministry is December 3. Come and be part of it.

With your help,

Our 1st Sunday mission offering in December will go to shipping charges for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. With the rise in cost per box to ship the shoeboxes this year, the mission fund paid out over $1000. Although we are so happy to have been able to send out 120 shoeboxes, your help is needed to put some of that money back into the mission fund for the various other projects we support. Thank you again for showing the love of Christ to 120 children around the world!

Looking Back

Things that happened at Holland United Methodist Church...

1985

Feb. 24—We had a combined Lenten service at Otwell Methodist Church. All Methodist churches from Pike & Dubois counties participated. Our choir sang. Pete took his school bus and others from thechurch went along. We had 33 on the bus. Gloria brought popcorn & Mary Louise Fenneman brought divinity candy. The choir sang “On Golgotha’s Hill”.

March 1—Had World Day of Prayer at St. Paul UCC. All 5 churches participated. The Young at Heart Sunday School class purchased 10 new Samsonite tables. Our UMW purchased a new double door refrigerator.

March 17—Mary Reller sang the solo in the choir anthem “Ashamed of Me” because Roger Reller (who was scheduled to sing it) was too hoarse from the Southridge Raiders semi-state game.

March 31—The following were confirmed by Rev. Silas Stiles: Wayne Kemper, Trina Powell, Dawn Feidler, Pala Peach, Tina Fuhrman, Kristina Bacon, Dana Sickbert, & Tracey Hunefeld. Our attendance today was 240.

April—The UMW purchased a used microwave from Lavonne Powell to be used in the church’s kitchen.

May 12—Mother’s Day. Dennis Haynes was in charge and read a poem and each mother received either a white or red carnation. Paul Lindsey explained to the congregation that the church board had approved the purchase of 5 stained glass windows for the church. The committee to select the windows and other remodeling of the church are: Paul & Gloria Lindsey, Joe & Bev Schmutzler, Dean & Mary Beth Henke, and Don & Linda Kemper. Each window is to cost approximately $1200. After church, quite a few people expressed the desire to put stained glass windows in front of church, in the nursery and in the chapel which would amount to 10 windows.

Senior Balance Exercise Class

Thursday afternoon

Senior Balance

exercise group will

meet on December 7

and then will take

a recess until January.

The group will

reconvene on Thursdays

at 2 PM starting

January 4.

Blue? Yes, blue as in the blues. As in "I am feeling blue."

There are many moments in our lives when we need

comfort. There are tough times when we yearn for consolation. The suffering people who looked for the

long-awaited Messiah were given a hope-filled image of God in the writings of Isaiah. It expresses the belief that no matter what happens to us, God will be

there to comfort and support us. For many of us, Christmas can be a time when we are in need of that reassurance and comfort. Perhaps we are grieving over the loss of a loved one, struggling

with illness, divorce or separation, or have experienced the loss of a job.

We wonder how we will get through the holidays.

A Service of Reflection, Remembrance, and Healing with the theme of “Blue Christmas” will be held Tuesday, December 19 at 7 p.m. at Zoar UMC.

Those looking for comfort, hope, wholeness, and renewal are invited to come for a time of quiet

reflection and meaningful words and music.

For a variety of delicious homemade cookies and baked

goods, come to the Augustana Cookie

Walk held in the basement of

Augustana UCC on Saturday, December 9

from 9:00 am to noon.

The Advent Candlelight service “One

Silent Night” will be held Sunday,

December 3 at 6:30 at St. James

Lutheran Church. The Senior, Youth,

and Cherub Choirs encourage you to

come witness the efforts of the peace

officers in Bethlehem to keep peace in

the midst of a census and the arrival of

rowdy shepherds and mysterious magi.

Experience the wonder of the star and

the peace of the season.

An offering will be

accepted for Dustin

Braun and Mason

Hartke.

Refreshments

following the service.
