Page 4: About Panmela Castro

Panmela Castro has been an active graffiti artist on the streets of Rio de Janeiro and other cities around the world since 2000. Her artistic research subject is the female body in dialogue with the urban landscape, otherness and perceptions brought about by experiences on the street, in the production of urban art. The artist critically investigates the construction of a female mythology arising from social constraints on women in contemporary society.

ACTIVISM

From years of experience with art classes, Panmela Castro developed a successful methodology for using graffiti as a tool for communication.

In 2010, she founded Rede NAMI, a feminist network that uses the urban arts to promote the rights of women. The network’s front-line project "Graffiti to End Domestic Violence", uses graffiti as a promotional tool for Brazil´s Maria Penha Law (outlawing domestic violence) and its protective services.

In 2014 alone, NAMI has executed more than 34 workshops reaching 1,000 students from public schools in Rio de Janeiro, painting 500 m2 of murals incorporating themes of working to prevent violence against women.

Given the success of the methodology she implemented in the workshops regarding domestic violence, Panmela was recognized by Newsweek in 2012 as one of the most influential women in the world joining the likes of Michelle Brachelet, Angelina Jolie and Cindy Sherman.

Panmela has also been honored with two international awards for human rights. She received the Global Leadership Awards from Vital Voices, an organization founded by Hillary Clinton, and the DVF Award from famed designer Diane von Furstenberg.

Page 19: About Panmela Castro

"Her name is Pamela Castro. And she's great. Through art and graffiti, she helps other women. When you know these people

have faced difficulties and can overcome them, and not only that, but helped others to move on, it's amazing."

Diane von Furstenberg in an interview with Mila Burns for Marie Claire.
