About NRA training: The Boy Scouts of America has partnered with the NRA to create the standards for firearm instruction and

supervision. The NRA’s training program is world-class and structured to help shooters of all skill levels to

learn how to safely shoot firearms while improving marksmanship.

The certifications that candidates will receive are not unique to the Boy Scouts of America, many private and

public ranges are under the supervision of NRA Range Safety Officers and NRA Certified Instructors.

Why do we need more NRA Certified Instructors?

Boy Scouts of America Supervision Requirements:

We want our shooting facilities at Phillips Scout Reservation and Camp Brunswick to be

used regularly, year-round. To meet this goal, we need to have as many interested

people as possible certified to supervise our shooting ranges.

Outside of a summer camp setting, at least one Certified Instructor (rifle, shotgun, or

pistol, respective to which shooting activity is taking place) AND one Range Safety

Officer must be present on the range. Sometimes more may be required.

Prerequisites and Requirements: You must be at least 21 years of age to become a Certified Instructor or

Range Safety Officer. You do not have to be an expert, but NRA Certified

Instructors must have experience with firearms.

If you are interested in becoming an instructor and feel you do not have

enough experience, we want to hear from you. We will work with you to get

you ready to be an instructor! If you’re under the age of 21, you may still be

eligible to attend instructor training; contact Eric Muench.

Basic Instructor Training: NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT) covers a broad range of topics necessary for all NRA Certified Instructors

including: building a training team, financing training, public speaking, NRA training methods and more.

● All NRA Certified Instructor candidates must complete

BIT before attending their first NRA Certified Instructor

training.

● NRA Range Safety Officer rating is not an instructor

rating and BIT is not required.

● A BIT course will be held in conjunction with each

Instructor Course.

● If you have not attended a BIT session in over 2 years,

please notify Eric Muench, you may need to retake BIT.

● Length: At least 5 Hours

● Cost: $16.00(Includes Materials & Instruction)

Credential Fees Credential fees are fees assessed by the NRA. The fee helps cover paperwork costs and continuous

improvement of the NRA Training and Education Department. The NRA Training and Education Department

offers assistance to the BSA and other youth organizations by offering instructional materials to youth at low or

no cost. The NRA does not charge any fees for the Chippewa Valley Council to host the training; the costs of

the non-profit NRA Training and Education department is funded by each individual instructor candidate. You

do not have to be an NRA member to be an NRA Certified Instructor, or Range Safety Officer, but it may

save you money in the long run. Ask Eric Muench any further questions.

● Instructors that are not NRA members: $50 for your first,

$20 for each additional instructor rating. Your instructor

certifications are valid two years. All ratings will expire at the

same time. Renewals are a flat fee of $50 (every two years),

regardless of how many instructor ratings you hold.

● Instructors that are NRA members: $30 for your first, $10

for each additional instructor rating. Your instructor certifications

are valid two years. All ratings will expire at the same time.

Renewals are a flat fee of $30 (every two years), regardless of

how many instructor ratings you hold.
