Muslim Hands - United for the Needy is an international relief anddevelopment organisation, established in 1993 with the objective

of providing relief from poverty, sickness and the provision of educationon a non-discriminatory basis.

We work both directly and with partners in 35 of the world’s poorestcountries. Although MH is recognised for rapid emergency response, our primary focus is on education and vocational training.

In 2005, we raised over ££88 mmiilllliioonn from individual donors, mosques andcommunity centres in the form of Zakah and Sadaqah donations andare one of the largest British Muslim charities, Al-Hamdu lillah.

Muslim Hands is registered in the UK with British Overseas NGOsDevelopment (BOND), DFID and a signatory to the Code of Conduct forThe International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and NGOs inDisaster Relief.

How It Works: So not a penny of your donation is spent on administration

If you are a UK taxpayer & have completed a GiftAid Declaration, the government allows MH toclaim back the tax you paid on your donation.

This is around £28 per £100 donation!

In 2005 - Gift Aid returns totalled £975,539which not only covers our staff salaries but ALLadministration costs too. That’s why we promisenot to spend a single penny of your donation onsalaries or administration expenses!

In the twelve years Muslim Hands has been working in Palestine, rarelyhave we witnessed ordinary civilians suffering as much as they are now.

With the economy in ruins, 78% of the population of Gaza is now livingunder the poverty line and 10% of all children under the age of five aresuffering from chronic malnutrition.

This dismal picture has worsened dramatically since the start of the war(July 2006), which has seen the crowded streets of Gaza pounded daily byheavy Israeli bombing. Even bridges, power stations, factories and publicbuildings have not been spared, bringing further suffering and misery.

Lebanon Crisis:

Muslim Hands, with its regional partners, has beenworking in South Lebanon since 1997, running orphan

sponsorship and a variety of income generation schemesfor widowed women such as Commercial Honey Production.

Already based in Saida (Sidon), which was the majorgathering point of displaced families, Muslim Hands wasable to begin immediately providing emergency aid to them.

MH WorkerHorrifiedImmediately after the August

ceasefire MH Lebanon begandistributing food and water tosouthern villages.

The willful destruction ofinfrastructure means there isno electricity and therefore norunning water (water pumpswere electric).

Al-Hamdu lillah, MH is usingwater tankers to reach theworst affected villages as anemergency measure, but this isnot viable for the future (80

tankers will be required to pro-vide adequate water supply).

MH has started using two large‘Mobile Power Generators’ toaccess the network of waterreservoirs already available inthe villages. The mobile gener-ators are moving from villageto village a lot quicker than thetankers.

Each Mobile Generatorcosts £32,000. Moreare urgently needed.

Kashmir & Pakistan Earthquake

06 Muslim Hands Feedback 2006

The Asian Earthquake killed, almost in an instant, over80,000 people on that dreadful morning of 8th October,2005 and left upwards of 3 million people homeless.

Muslim Hands offices across Pakistan were mobilisedimmediately – with experienced teams, many of whomhelped with the Bam Earthquake in 2003, rushing to thearea to help the survivors. MH teams already working inMuzaffarabad (since 1993) were on the ground withinhours, restlessly searching for survivors .

By the following morning, over 250 MH staff and volunteerswere active in the Muzaffarabad area. Moved by the sheerscale of the destruction and human suffering, over 200 ofthem stayed on for six months or more to help with clear-ance and reconstruction work.

In addition to this, teams of doctors were flown from the UKto the affected areas to provide medical assistance to thetens of thousands of injured victims.

7 MH Camps setupfor the survivors

MH established 7 largecamps catering for over60,000 homeless people.

But the harsh terrain andimpassable roads meantmany survivors could notreach the camps. With thebitter Kashmir winter fastapproaching, MH raced tosetup numerous smallcamps in the remote hillyareas surrounding Bagh,Balacote and Mansera.

2006: A Year of Crisis after Crisis

08 Muslim Hands Feedback 2006

Looking back at 2006 is heartbreaking. Month after monthit seems Muslim Hands was reacting to one crisis afteranother. From the drought in Niger and Mali to the massiveearthquake that hit Java in May, or the now almost forgot-ten humanitarian crisis in Iraq and Palestine, the scale ofhuman suffering in each crisis is too terrible to imagine.

Al-Hamdu lillah, with your support Muslim Hands WorldwideEmergency Response Teams have been highly active in get-ting relief to the most needy.

In line with UN Millennium Development Goal (MDG) which pledges by2015 to reduce at least half the world’s population with no access to safe

drinking water and sanitation, Muslim Hands has in recent years increasing-ly focused on larger schemes aimed at solving community problems. Fromlarge underground water storage systems in Sudan to sophisticated waterpumping systems in Iraq and Lebanon, each scheme can serve thousandsof people.

Safe water schemes save lives… but only when combined with sanitationand basic health education, do we begin to see dramatic reductions inwater related illnesses and deaths. The MH Combined Water Scheme doesexactly that plus more...it also includes tree plantation, promoting ahealthier enviroment.

Income Generation

15Muslim Hands Feedback 2006

Small Loans SchemesThe Small Loans Schemes gives poor unemployed individuals a start-uploan for a small business, so that they and their families can earn a digni-fied income.

The loans are small so repayment is easy, and of course there is no interestinvolved. MH uses all the repayments to generate further loans.

Various businesses have been started successfully over recent years, includ-ing rickshaw taxis in Bangladesh, milking goats in Nepal and shops inIndonesia. In each case, MH field officers carefully assess the potential ofeach business and provide ongoing advice and support if required.

This year, poor farmers on the Island of Nias, Indonesia weregranted small herds of sheep. On maturity, some of the sheepwere then sold back to MH and some at the market in time for theannual Qurbani project thus generating income.

Helping the needy help themselves through job-skills training and business start-up grants

Forests of Indonesia Aceh and North Sumatra in Indonesia are abundant in naturalresources, but their exploitation is causing irreversible destruction.

MH ran workshops in partnership with Islamic Foundation forEcology & Environmental Sciences (IFEES) and World Wildlife FundIndonesia (WWF) to create awareness amongst people via IslamicScholars of the Islamic need to protect the environment.

Individuals, families, mosques, businesses, and other chari-ties are now seeing the benefits of working with MH to build

and run their own charitable projects.

For charites and community organisations (acting on behalf ofothers), MH-IMP is the most cost effective and securemethod - as it allows the organisation access to MH skills andnetwork and of course we generate quality feedback whichcan be used for further fundraising.

For individuals, it gives them a chance to finally chooseEXACTLY where, how and on whom their donations are spent.

From well-digging in Afghanistan (£550) to building a ‘Schoolof Excellence’ (costing over £80,000) we can find a projectthat is right for you or even entire orphan villages (costing over£450,000).
