How did Motawi Tileworks get started?Motawi was started 22 years ago by Nawal Motawi, an artistic and

perennially restless young lady from a small town in West Michigan

who had strong opinions about how things should be done. After

studying ceramics and figure sculpture in art school, she took a

job making tile at the storied Pewabic Pottery in Detroit, where she

could learn tile-making from the pros and keep a mini-studio in the

basement. She discovered after a year or two that she needed to be

her own employer, so she set up a studio in an Ann Arbor garage. It

was here that she began to develop the tile designs and glazes that

would define Motawi Tileworks’ style.

Where did the name come from?Nawal’s father, Kamal El-Din Hussein Motawi, is from Egypt, where

“Motawi” is a pretty normal surname. He came to the U.S. to earn his

Ph.D. and fell in love with Karen Kitson, a smart and pretty Michigan

farm girl in his calculus class.

What about the staff?Motawi tile and Motawi clay are made in Ann Arbor, Michigan, by

conscientious and humor-loving people. The Motawi crew works every

day to enrich people’s lives with their positive energy and beautiful

tiles.

Display EaselsThe 7" Roebuck and 5" Emerson easels are made in our hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Roebuck holds all of our standard-sized tile and is deep enough to accommodate our wooden display frames; the shorter Emerson is specifically designed for our 4"-tall tiles. Both easels are constructed of steel. (Please note that the Emerson easel has shorter arms and is not meant to hold frames.)

Frank Lloyd Wright Architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) found virtually no distinction between life and architecture. Architecture, art, nature, and life were all one thing to him—to be explored, savored, and appreciated. Given this, it is not surprising that Wright believed in creating total environments, which included designing not only residences, shops, skyscrapers, but also the art glass windows, furniture, fabrics, lamps, carpets, and tiles that filled them. Motawi Tileworks partners with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to create art tile that is adapted from Wright’s portfolio of work.

Polychrome GlazingMotawi’s polychrome tile decorators are affectionately referred to as “the Bee Gees,” short for “bulb glazers,” because they use bulb syringes to pool glaze onto the tiles. In this centuries-old technique—called cuenca, or simply raised-line—color areas are separated by the tiny ridges of clay that are formed in the pressing process. As one can imagine, it takes patience, focus, and steady hands to be a good bulb glazer!

Pine Landscapes. Our Pine Landscape and Woodland tiles are inspired by “The Pines,” a series designed by Addison LeBoutillier and produced by Grueby Faience of Boston at the beginning of the twentieth century. Shown at left, 4820 and 8820 8"-tall Pine Landscapes triptych in Oak Park Frame.
