The choice of fabric will depend on the characteristics of the structure that is being designed. – its function, form and visuality all play an integral roll in its specification.

Whilst there are a number of external fabrics, 3 main types cover the spectrum of structures where external ‘fabric’ is used – each with their own individual characteristics and performance criteria.

Fabric Choice

PVC Coated Polyester (Polyvinylchloride)This is the most cost effective and flexible, in terms of application, membrane material. By its constitution it is both soft and pliable and its performance characteristics change according to the gauge selected.

Its lifespan depends on the individual application however this can be expected to be anything up to 20 years.

PTFE Coated Glass (Polytetrafluroethylene)The market leader for use in large-scale permanent structures, PTFE has a strength and durability that ensures a useful working life in excess of 3 decades.

Silicone Coated GlassWith a high inbuilt tensile strength and versatile flexible characteristics, silicon coated glass fibre is a dimensionally stable alternative where enhanced longevity is required.

Its lifespan depends on the individual application however this can be expected to be anything between 25 and 30 years.

Once you have considered your structure why not add some functional and practical accessories that will extend and enhance your shade sails and tension structures.

Where linear edged structures’ have been butted together, guttering can be affixed in order that rain water can be dispersed effectively, via the edge mounted guttering and a strategically located downpipe.

Structure Guttering

To allow the quick and easy removal of snow (and leaf) build ups, a winch can be added which lowers the sail, enabling the snow or other materials to be safely removed. The sail can be retensioned into its original state. The winch can then be locked for added security.
