About Kangaroo Flat Kangaroo Flat is the gateway to Greater Bendigo from Melbourne. It was the finding of gold in the rich Crusoe Gully west of Kangaroo Flat in 1853 that started a rush to the district. The area was named Kangaroo Flat after the large mobs of Eastern Grey Kangaroos that the miners encountered around their campsites and in the vast bush forests. You will notice the Bendigo Creek in all of its diversity, as you wander along the trail section of Let’s Walk Kangaroo Flat. High Street, Kangaroo Flat, between Station and View Street, offers a variety of retail choices and further along the Calder Highway more shopping opportunities are available at Rocklea Home Maker Centre and Lansell Square. Kangaroo Flat has three sites on the Victorian Heritage Register: the railway station complex (1862), the former common school (1870) and the Coliban water supply system which feeds into the Crusoe Reservoir and was completed in 1873. A feature of Let’s Walk Kangaroo Flat is the new Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre with its 50 metre heated indoor pool and other swimming and water play options. The area also offers a range of other local natural, creative and physical features for people who like to breathe in the fresh air as they walk and talk with others through the trees. About Kangaroo Flat

Kangaroo Flat is the gateway to Greater Bendigo from Melbourne.

It was the finding of gold in the rich Crusoe Gully west of Kangaroo Flat in 1853 that started a rush to the district.

The area was named Kangaroo Flat after the large mobs of Eastern Grey Kangaroos that the miners encountered around their campsites and in the vast bush forests.
