Women Business oWners

need retirement Plans

If you’re a woman who owns a business, you’ve got plenty of company. Women own more than 10 mil-lion U.S. companies, and women-owned businesses account for about 40% of all privately held firms in the U.S., according to the Center for Women’s Business Research. Clearly, the good news is that women like you are entering the small-business arena at a rapid pace. The not-so-good news is that you may be facing a retirement savings gap in comparison to male business owners. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy, 19.4% of male business owners have 401(k) or similar plans, compared with just 15.5% of women owners. The percentage of female business owners with Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) is about the same as that of male business owners — but the men have more money in their accounts. The aver-age woman’s IRA balance is about $51,000, com-pared with $91,000 for men, according to a recent report by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Although these figures change constantly with the ebbs and flow of the market, the difference between the genders remains significant. One way to help close this savings gap, of course, is to set up a retirement plan for your business. But for many women business owners (and male owners, too), the perceived cost of setting up and running a retirement plan has been an obstacle. However, the retirement plan market has opened up considerably for small business owners over the past several years, so you might be surprised at the ease and inexpensiveness of administering a quality plan that can help you build resources for your own retirement — and help you attract and retain good employees.

With the help of a financial professional, you can consider some of the myriad of plans that may be available to you: Owner-only 401(k) — This plan, which is also known as an individual 401(k), is available to self-employed individuals and business owners with no full-time employees other than themselves or a spouse. You may even be able to choose a Roth option for your 401(k), which allows you to make after-tax contributions that can grow tax-free.SEP IRA — If you have just a few employees or are self-employed with no employees, you may want to consider a SEP IRA. You’ll fund the plan with tax-deductible contributions, and you must cover all eligible employees.Solo defined benefit plan — Pension plans, also known as defined benefit plans, are still around — and you can set one up for yourself if you are self-employed or own your own business. This plan has high contribution limits, which are determined by an actuarial calculation, and as is the case with other retirement plans, your contributions are typically tax-deductible.SIMPLE IRA — A SIMPLE IRA, as its name sug-gests, is easy to set up and maintain, and it can be a good plan if your business has fewer than 10 employees. Still, while a SIMPLE IRA may be advan-tageous for your employees, it’s less generous to you, as far as allowable contributions, than an own-er-only 401(k), a SEP IRA or a defined benefit plan.As a business owner, you spend a lot of time thinking about what needs to be done today, but you don’t want to forget about tomorrow — so consider putting a retirement plan to work for you soon.

Harrison Announces Candidacy for Board of Commissionerslong-time Resident Values Community, Common Sense and Civility

Announcing his candidacy for the Post I seat on the Rockdale County Board of Com-missioners, Tom Harrison said he will tackle the tough issues facing our community with a practical, common sense approach that values civility and cooperation. The long-time resident and community volunteer believes that approach can go a long way in addressing issues ranging from economic development, to planning and zoning, and public safety.“I think our County needs leaders who can put politics aside and make sensible deci-sions on behalf of all of our citizens,” said Harrison, a businessman and entrepreneur “You have got to be able to work with people of differing opinions in a thoughtful and respectful manner in order to forge partnerships that will serve the common good.”Harrison said he has a passion for the Conyers-Rockdale community, which he moved to more than 30 years ago to property owned by his family since the 1950s. He decided to run for the Board of Commissioners because the community is at a crossroads, and effective leadership is needed now more than ever.“I have seen our sense of community decline; I have watched people operating in isolation when collaborations should be sought; and I have witnessed civility in our government erode,” said Harrison. “These are recent trends I’d like to help reverse.“The manner in which we conduct ourselves as public servants greatly impacts how successful we are at addressing the community’s needs,” he added. “We need leaders who are responsive and courteous to all. Behaving otherwise demeans the position and the public trust, and it diminishes our sense of unity and our sense of community.“What I offer voters is a candidate who honors civility over hostility; community over partisan agendas, and common sense ideas over grandiose platitudes.”If elected, Harrison’s priorities would include working with the City of Conyers to ensure that city and county ordinances are consistent and that they are equally con-ducive to economic development. Additionally, Harrison favors reducing the salary of the Commissioner Chairman and exploring the feasibility of changing the govern-ment structure so that a professional handles the day-to-day operations to prevent politics from interfering with effective governance. And, while he places great value on regional cooperation, Harrison will work hard to ensure that Rockdale retains its unique identity and reflects the standards set by the citizens of this community, not neighboring jurisdictions. As principal with Tom Harrison & Associates, Inc. he has worked in the water, sew-erage and irrigation industry since 1990. Prior to that, he worked as national sales manager in manufacturing and distribution in the same industry. He also worked as an assistant personnel director after graduating from then West Georgia College now University of West Georgia. He holds a BA in Psychology from West Georgia with a minor in Environmental Studies and Anthropology. He and his wife, Lorraine, publish the About Conyers Magazine, a division of Tom Harrison & Associates. Between them they have four children and four grand children
