May, 2009 is About Conyers Magazine’s Tenth Anniversary Issue. I had great plans for this issue. I had planned to do some special features, have some interviews with advertisers who have been with us from the beginning, a special crossword puzzle using things in the magazine as answers, etc.
Unfortunately, life got in the way. In the last 30 days I have had a roller coaster of events and emotions. My Dad passed away, our daughter was married, and I received two high honors: the Small Business Person of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce and American Business Women Association’s Woman of the Year.
Needless to say, the things I had planned for my business had to be set aside for my family.
I want to thank the Chamber and ABWA for the honors I received. I want to thank this commu-nity for the overwhelming outpouring of condolences and congratulations. It has reminded me of what a great place this is to live and work. We all want to belong and be appreciated. This community is a place that has caring people who support one another in a variety of ways.
Every community experiences change and change is always a little uncomfortable. Our chal-lenge is to embrace the changes in our community while maintaining the supportive and caring environment Conyers has always had. Working together we can insure Conyers continues to be a great place raise families and to do business. It is also important that we support our local businesses. They are the backbone of our economy and are owned by our neighbors and friends.
I want to thank all of our advertisers from over the years and all those people who continue to use About Conyers Magazine as a resource for local events and services. We will do our best to continue to bring you a quality publication that is useful to those who receive it.

SMART FINANCIAL MOVES FOR “EMPTy NESTERS” It’s graduation time at colleges across the country. If you have children graduating from college, you’re probably excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for them. But once your last child leaves home, and you become an “empty nester,” you also may find some good oppor-tunities for yourself — opportunities to improve your financial situation.In fact, your empty nester status may help you make progress toward what are likely some key financial goals at this stage of your life: Getting rid of debt and acceler-ating your savings for retirement.What steps should you consider? For starters, you could downsize your home by moving into a smaller, less expensive one. If you make a profit on the sale of your home, you could use it to invest for retirement and clear up debts. Of course, you may be emotionally attached to your home and neighborhood, but downsizing may be a good financial option to consider at some point.Here are a few other suggestions for taking advantage of your empty nest:* “Max out” on your retirement plans. If you now have money no longer needed for your children’s college education, use these funds to help save for retirement. Try to fully fund your traditional or Roth IRA, and put as much as you can possibly afford into your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you still have money available after “maxing out” on these accounts, look for other retirement savings vehicles.* Increase your investments for other goals. Up until now, part of your investment strategy — perhaps a large
part — was aimed at building enough resources to help your children pay for college. Since that need has now been met, you may be free to boost your investment toward other goals, such as travel, a vacation home, charitable giving, funding for a small business you hope to operate after you retire — the list could go on and on. And since you are probably entering your peak earn-ing years, you may be able to add substantially to the investments designed to help you achieve these various objectives.* Reduce your credit card debt. If you have more dispos-able income available now, try to pay off your high-rate credit cards. By freeing up this money, you can save and invest more.* Evaluate your insurance needs. When you purchased your life insurance, you may have factored in enough coverage to pay off your mortgage, send your kids to college and provide some retirement funds for your spouse. But if your kids are through school, your mort-gage is nearly paid off and your spouse has accumu-lated some money in an employer-sponsored retirement plan, you may not need the same amount of life and disability coverage. Any money you can save on insur-ance can be used to help fund your IRA, 401(k) or other investments.As an empty nester, you will miss your children, but you’ll also find that you have greater freedom to pursue your hobbies or other interests. And by taking the steps described above, you can help yourself move closer to reaching your financial objectives as well.

Nagoya Japanese Steak, Seafood, Sushi Bar located is located at 1375 Iris Drive in Conyers. Nagoya opened in 1994 and has enjoyed serving the residents of Rockdale County for 15 years. It is a family owned and operated restaurant and they now have 4 locations: Conyers, Alpharetta, Snell-ville and Greenwood, South Carolina.
When it opened Conyers Nagoya was the first of its kind in the area. Nagoya has authentic Japanese farmhouse interior and food is prepared right at the table “teppan-yaki” style (teppan meaning “steel grill” and yaki meaning “broiled”) with dazzling effects by highly trained chefs. The showmanship of the chefs is extremely important and entertaining as they pre-pare exotic Japanese dishes blended with a dazzling chef performance.
Beef, chicken and shrimp are the stars of the menu, all prepared “hibachi-style”. Guests at the communal tables place their orders with the chef and watch in amazement as these items were sliced and diced, and flipped into the air. The timing in cooking is critical. These different ingredients have to be ready to serve onto the guests’ plates simultaneously.
Nagoya also features a scrumptious sushi bar menu, with delicious fresh items including specialty rolls, which can be enjoyed as a meal or an appetizer. More than just a food, sushi has become an art form enjoyed for its taste as well as presentation.

Ways to Keep your Garden In Color All SeasonBy Marie Iannotti, About.com
Trying to manipulate a sequence of bloom in the garden is part art, part science and a good part luck. Weather, grazing animals, and flowers that don’t follow the calender can create lulls where no plants seem to be in peak performance. Here are a few tricks to keeping pockets of color going throughout the summer.
1. DeadheadingDeadheading, or removing spent blossoms, is the easiest way to keep plants blooming. Annuals especially will benefit from a periodic deadheading. Simply snip the entire spent flower stalk off the plant, as close to the base as possible
2. ShearingPlants that produce multiple flower buds on their flower stalks can be a nightmare to deadhead. Rather than trying to deadhead every flower, wait until the bulk of the buds have faded and shear the plants by about 1/3. This serves to rejuvenate the plant.
3. Step PruningA clever way to prolong the perennial blooms is to prune the plants in steps. Visually divide a clump of 1 type of plant into 3 sections: front, center and back. Once the plants get about 6-8” tall, prune the front and center sections of plants by 1/3 to 1/2. Let the whole clump grow another 6-8 inches and then prune just the front section by 1/3 to 1/2. This type of pruning will result in your clump of plants turning into 3 levels or steps that will bloom in succession.
4. FeedingPlants expend a lot of energy flowering. The more they flower, the more food they need. Even if you added a controlled release fertilizer at the beginning of the season, your flow-ering plants will need a boost every 3-5 weeks. A balanced all-purpose fertilizer will suf-fice, but if you really want to kick things into gear, try a dose of super or triple phosphate. 5. Cheat a Bit and Mix in Colorful FoliageFlowers come and go, but foliage just keeps getting bigger. It just keeps getting easier and easier to have a riot of color in the garden without a flower in sight. Shrubs like ‘Black Beauty’ Sambucus, chartreuse and bronze sweet potato vines, screaming orange cannas and the pale pinks and cream of Weigela ‘My Monet’ can either complement, augment or even replace the flowers in your garden. And we haven’t even mentioned the rainbow available in coleus. Sprinkle your garden beds with a few hardy shrubs and sprinting annu-als and you’ll never be without a spot of color.

Rockdale Offers Free Prescription Drug Discount Program
Rockdale officials are reminding all residents of the County’s free prescription drug discount program. Resi-dents already utilizing the program have been saving as an average of 25 percent on prescribed medications.
Rockdale County launched the program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs. The county
is making the free prescription drug discount cards available under a program spon-sored by the National Association of Counties (NACo).
“I am pleased that we are able to offer a program that can save our citizens money on the medicines they need,” said County Commissioner Chairman & CEO Richard Oden. “Best of all, there is no cost to county taxpayers for NACo and Rockdale County to make these money saving cards available to our residents.”
The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage, and are accepted at nearly all pharmacies within Rockdale County. A national network of more than 59,000 participating retail pharmacies also honors the Rockdale County Prescription Discount Card.

To use the NACo prescription discount card, simply present it at a participating pharmacy. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. The prescription discount card offers significant savings for the uninsured and underinsured residents of Rockdale. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance, and residents who do have prescription coverage can use the card to save money on drugs that are not covered by their health plan. Residents do not have to be Medicare beneficiaries to be eligible for this program.
