About Alzheimer’s Disease AssociationAlzheimer’s Disease Association (ADA) was formed in 1990 because of a growing concern for the needs of persons living with dementia and their caregivers.

Through our work, the Association hopes to reduce stigma by increasing awareness and understanding of dementia; enabling and involving persons living with dementia to be integrated and accepted in the community; and leading in the quality of dementia care services for persons living with dementia and their families.

Striving towards a dementia inclusive society through our four strategic service pillars; Centre-Based Care, Caregiver Support, Academy and Community Enabling, the Association aims to advocate and inspire the society to regard and respect persons living with dementia as individuals who can still lead purposeful and meaningful lives.

2018/19 was a significant year for Alzheimer’s Disease Association as we achieved several milestones. We launched Enabling EDIE – Asia’s first virtual reality training workshop that enables participants to see the world through the eyes of a person living with dementia. We also rolled out Singapore’s first nationwide survey on dementia awareness and stigma in collaboration with Singapore Management University.

All this is part of our efforts to reduce stigma, one of our long-term goals to help us to achieve a dementia inclusive society. That is why we are also accelerating our community-enabling programmes like Memories Café to reduce stigma and equip our partners to build an inclusive Dementia Friendly Community.

The number of participants in Memories Café has grown from 800 in 2015 to about 1,800 in 2018 which is a more than two-fold increase. To date, we’ve worked with 24 cafés and restaurants island wide to benefit over 4,600 beneficiaries through this programme. Memories Café remains very popular, and is fully enrolled at almost every session.

On behalf of our clients, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our sponsors, donors and well-wishers, who have stepped forward to champion a Dementia Inclusive Society through this afternoon’s charity luncheon. We humbly appeal for your relentless support as we hope to continue the momentum in 2019/20 by expanding our services to reach wider ground and ensure that the needs of persons with dementia are always covered.

Gurmit SinghSingaporean actor, comedian, host and published author. A former Mediacorp artiste, Gurmit is best known for his role in Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd, for which he won the Asian Television Awards prize for Best Performance by an Actor (Comedy) five times. He is also a much sought-after host and emcee who has repeatedly hosted numerous shows on Singapore television and large-scale events such as the Singapore National Day Parade and New Year Eve countdown celebrations.

Jeremy MonteiroJazz Pianist, composer, producer vocalist & educator. Jeremy has been a professional musician since 1976 with more than 40 solo albums to his name. Crowned the King of Swing in Singapore, he has performed with James Moody, Ernie Watts, Simon & Garfunkel in great venues all over the world. He has also performed at Ronnie Scott’s in London, the Mainstage of the Montreux, EFG London and many other jazz festivals. He was awarded with Singapore’s highest honour in the arts, The Cultural Medallion in 2002.

Dr William TanA world-record-holding Paralympian, stage 4 leukemia survivor and international inspirational speaker. Dr. William Tan contracted polio when he was two and became paralysed from the waist down. Notwithstanding his disability, he turned adversities into opportunities, winning scholarships to Raffles Institution, Harvard and Oxford and became a brain scientist and physician. Dr. Tan is also an accomplished sportsman. An Asian-Pacific Games triple gold medallist, he became the first man to finish marathons in Antarctica and North Pole in extreme conditions in a wheelchair.

Priscilla Tan An only child, a Geriatric nurse and a full-time caregiver and “parent” to her beloved father living with dementia since 2016. Her days off are dedicated to engaging her dad with #myorthodoxdementiatherapy & attending Saturday Memories Cafe sessions. ADA has enabled Priscilla to pursue a fulfilling life as a caregiver and encouraged her to actively share her journey with others.

Head Jennifer Ann Prior to joining ADA in 2018, Jennifer was observed to be reserved and frequently anxious. She also expressed feelings of sadness and loneliness from time to time. A year on, Jennifer is now very vocal and expressive and enjoys interacting with people around her. An avid singer, her favourite song is “Only You” which is the song that brings her happy memories spent together with her late husband.

Angela Saik Angela is a banker with more than 16 years of experience under her belt. She’s also an avid singer, having discovered a passion for singing at the tender age of four, and was once part of an all-women acapella group. She continues to organise and perform for charities, corporate, and private functions while pursuing her career.

Donnie Chan Since winning a local singing contest back in 2001, Donnie has established himself as a versatile veteran of the mandarin and canto-pop music scene in the region. Donnie had the privilege of singing the theme song for Jack Neo’s movie titled “I Not Stupid”. He was also invited to perform at Esplanade’s Tribute to Leslie Cheung and to sing with the Summertimes Big Band at Esplanade Concert Hall for their Beautiful Sunday Mother’s Day series.
