Despite recent numbersthat show southwest AllenCounty home sales weredown slightly in 2011, theAboite-Lafayette townshipareas saw the highestmedian sales price overall.

Based on numbersreleased by the UpstateAlliance of Realtors,Allen County accountedfor 68 percent of totalhome sales in the region. In 2011, the number ofclosed home sales inAllen County totaled3,986 out of a total 5,889for the entire region, which includes Adams,Allen, DeKalb, Hunt-ington, Noble, Wells andWhitley counties.

The Aboite andLafayette townships saw625 home sales close in2011, down 1.4 percentfrom the previous yearand behind Wayne andPleasant townships(1,017) and St. Joe Town-ship (886). However,

December home sales inthe Aboite-Lafayette areas

were up 47.6 percent fromthe same month in 2010,with 62 closed homesales.

Alan Moore, principalbroker and owner of River

City Realty in FortWayne, attributes thelarge number of homesales in Wayne Township

to population and afford-able pricing, and predicts

the area will again see thehighest number of sales in2012.

    Based on a pure

number of transactions,Wayne Township will lead

again, but I think this willbe a year of solid upswingfor the whole county,Moore said. The inven-tory is ticking down a bitwith sales slightly up, sowe are starting to seemore quality listingsthroughout the county. You always have greathomes in town, especiallyWest Central and South-wood Park, but thesouthwest and northwestareas never seem to stalland will account for alarge percentage of sales.

Overall, new homeprices have remainedstable: the average valueof new homes permittedin Allen County in 2011was $185,746, comparedwith $184,801 in 2010and $178,745 in 2009.Last year, the Aboite-Lafayette area maintainedthe highest median salesprice, $170,000, ahead ofEel River, Lake and Perrytownships in northwestAllen County, Mooresaid.

A calculated investmentLocal venture group saw potential in acquiring 60-year-old Bowmar

With new ownership and arenewed mission, FortWayne-based BowmarLLC is on its wayback to the future.

The 60-year-oldFort Wayne electronicscompany, famouslyknown for inventingthe handheld calcu-lator in 1971 and thenlosing the market forthe consumer deviceto rival Texas Instruments, is returning tothe strategies and strengths that made it asuccessful aerospace and defensecontractor.

It also took back the core name founderEdward White, a former employee ofFarnsworth Radio and Television Corp.,gave the company when he and his wife,Joan, started Bowmar Instrument Corp. intheir Fort Wayne garage in 1951.

The Fort Wayne business waspurchased from Phoenix-based WhiteElectronic Designs Corp. in March 2010by about two dozen investors in the MainStreet Venture Fund, which was createdby consulting firm Ruffolo Benson LLC.

The mission of RuffoloBenson is to retain andregain ownership oflocal businesses. Thisfit in our wheelhouseperfectly, said Bix

Benson, now Bowmarschairman of the board.Ruffolo Benson had learned

the Fort Wayne business was forsale through a White board

member who hadserved on yet anotherboard with the lateJoe Ruffolo. MainStreet made a

proposal, negotiations went back andforth and eventually a deal was struck toacquire the local operation.

There was a lot of interest inBowmar, said Karen Goldner, the MainStreet Venture Fund president who movedover to become Bowmars president inlate November. It was profitable and itseemed to have an upside potential Itwasnt a blue-sky startup.

Bowmar has had its share of ups anddowns. After introducing its calculator, the Bowmar Brain, the company wasoutmaneuvered by Texas Instruments andeventually ended up in bankruptcy. It

The trouble with carbsRemember the fat-free

craze of the late 90s? Agood meal consisted of aplateful of pasta with

marinara sauce, crustybread and fat-free icecream for dessert. And wecould eat all we wantedbecause it was fat-free,right? Well a paradoxoccurred during this era inwhich our society actuallygot larger and sickereating fat-free foods. Howcould this be? Weincreased ourcarbohydrate and sugarintake.

During that time andstill today, we arebombarded with an enor-mous amount of

carbohydrates and sugarin our diet and this is

where the problem begins.Throughout history, anthropologists havediscovered that our hunter

and gatherer ancestorswho lived on lean meats, seafood, seasonal vegeta-bles, fruits, nuts, and eggshad less malnutrition andchronic illness than theirfellow farmers whoconsumed a significantamount of grains andsugar.

Carbohydrates provideglucose or fructose, whichour bodies use as anenergy source. When youconsume glucose, it isstored in the liver andmuscles as glycogen. When the liver and muscle

glycogen capacity is full, excess carbohydrates are

then converted and storedas fat in our bellies andhips and also converted tocholesterol. Excess carbo-

hydrates can also affectour brains, decreasing our

awareness of being full.So we remain hungrydespite excess glucoselevels and we continue to

eat and crave these foods. As a result of this

excess glucose, weproduce more and moreinsulin and during thisprocess, our bodies start to

become insulin resistant. These high insulin levelscause systemic inflamma-tion and put us at risk forchronic issues such asType 2 diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, osteoporosis, autoimmuneissues, infertility, and ulti-mately cancer.

This is serious stuff tounderstand not only forourselves but also for ourchildren. This is the firstgeneration that will notoutlive their parents. Onein three children will bediabetic. Just take a

moment to consider theamount of sugar and carbs

the average childconsumes in a day. Itsalarming.

So what do we do? Weneed to reconsider ourcarbohydrate and sugarintake. Instead of acarb-laden bowl of cereal, consider an egg cookedwith spinach, topped with

    avocado and salsa. If

Medicare cuts impact skilled nursing facilitiesHow you can help, without jeopardizing care of residents

Over the past several years, skilled nursingfacilities have absorbed billions in Medicareand Medicaid cuts. As of October 2011, therewas an 11.1 percent cut to Medicare benefits

for all skilled nursing facilities across thecountry. Other proposed cuts are coming down

the road to Medicare, as well as Medicaid.Continuous cuts threaten access to quality carefor Americas growing population of seniors.

Nationwide, more than 70 percent of allpatients in nursing homes rely on Medicare andMedicaid funds, according to the Alliance forQuality Nursing Home Care, and further cuts

to Medicare could negatively impact residentsand prove disastrous to facilities, localeconomies, and caregiver jobs. Unfortunately,

the biggest expense area in skilled nursingfacilities is staffing. Estimates are that tens ofthousands of care staff could lose their jobs inorder to balance this deep cut. These staffingcuts can potentially be detrimental to thequality of care that every resident and futureresident deserves.

be a favorable year forbuyers, there is somepositive news for sellers,Moore said.

The market is defi-nitely still on the buyersside, but sellers areholding their ground.Based on statistics fromUpstar, the percentage oforiginal list price for

homes sold in 2011 was94 percent - pretty staticfrom 94.2 percent in2010, he said.

Still, many who wouldlike to sell an existinghome this year could keepwith a nationwide trendof holding off and listinghomes for rent rather thanfight the current market.

Quite a few home-owners who boughtbefore the marketretracted either cannot ordo not want to sell theirhome in the current

market, Moore said.Renting that propertycan be a viable option formany. River City Realtyhas had an increase inrequests for propertymanagement services andinquiries, and we expectthat to continue this year.

Home building activityin and around AllenCounty continued atabout the same pace in2011 as in both 2009 and2010. An analysis by theHome Builders Associa-tion of Fort Wayne foundits members accounted

for a total of 872 newhome permits last year,

compared with 916 in2010 and 894 in 2009.The year just endedincluded 680 permits inAllen County.

As has been the norm,Perry and Aboite town-ships were the busiest inAllen County for newhome builders in 2011.The numbers were down

from 2010, and Perry isseeing a shortage of lotsavailable as Huntertownworks through plans toexpand its sewer capacityby building its own treat-ment plant.

St. Joe and Washingtontownships also accountedfor a big chunk of permitactivity in both years.

According to TonyReincke of Granite RidgeBuilders by TonyReincke, developers haveheld back on creating newsubdivisions in Allen

County in the past fewyears, and new shortagesmay develop as those lotsare taken.

Move-up buyers havebecome more realisticabout the prices they canget for their existinghomes, Reincke added. Inparticular, he is seeingincreased interest frombaby boomers who wantto move into one-levelranch homes and villasthat will be easier tohandle as they age, andalso from young peopleready to buy a home as

    they start or expand theirfamilies.

Based simply on thenumbers, there is a fairchance this year thosebaby boomers and youngpeople will purchase froma selection of existingrather than new homes.

Existing home salesgreatly outnumber newhome sales. There is sucha great inventory of

existing homes and withthe current economictimes, there are fewerbuilders and developers,Moore said. He addedthat according to theUpstar multiple listingservice, in 2011 therewere 4,025 existing homesales, compared to just224 new home sales.Granted, many of thenew homes sold dontmake it to the MLS,Moore said.

But the countycontinues to offer a varied

market fit for anyone,Moore said, from Victo-rian homes built at theturn of the century tosprawling, contemporarysuburban ranches.

It is truly a diversearea. That will alwaysmake this an attractiveplace to live. State andcounty home sales wereboth slightly up over2010 and that is prom-ising. Overall, we seegood things coming for2012.

my body if I changed itwith food? she said.

She also knew that ifshe was going to carry outthis task as an art experi-ment, she would followDr. Joel Furhmans plan. She found out aboutFuhrman 10 yearsprevious, when her sonwas 11 years old and he

    was diagnosed with Type1 diabetes.

I googled reversediabetes and an articleabout him came out.Thats how I started tolearn, Boller said.

In the spring of 2008,she had high blood pres-sure and she was headedfor heart disease. Bollerwas prescribed statindrugs, but didnt takethem.

I knew I was sitting onthe brink, she said. Itwasnt if, it was when I

was going to have a heartattack or a stroke. After the night in the

studio, she decided shewould write Fuhrman andsee if he would endorseher art exhibit. Fuhrman isone of the countrysleading nutritional andnatural method experts. He travels all over theworld and his book, EatTo Live, is currentlyranked No. 5 on The NewYork Times best-sellerlist.

Bollers transformativejourney started in July of

2008 and she documentedthe changes through herpersonal website.

I documented it withmy pictures, she said.Within 10 months to ayear, I lost 100 pounds.

Fuhrman ended upreading the letter she sentand looked at her website. He invited her to startwriting for his healthblog.

    She vividly remembersher first assignment.

He wanted me to write300 words about my

favorite vegetable, Bollersaid. After the first post, she began writing oneevery week. Now sheemcees at events andhealth getaways. She alsoshares her own story as amotivational speaker.

While she said she canbe found on the road, traveling, returning to thecity provides a change of

    pace.I have my little quiet

world in Aboite Township, where nobody knowswhat I do, she said.

The book she read tolose weight, Eat ToLive, emphasizes a high-nutrient, plant-based wayof living, Boller said.

Lots of greens, vegeta-bles and beans. Juststaying away fromprocessed foods and lotsof animal products, she

said. She said she learned alot about her body afterreading Eat to Live.

I was very, verymalnourished, she said, even though I was obese.Within four days, just thecravings went away. I wasgetting nourished again.

Boller said she learnedto select foods that havethe highest nutrient value. But she also admitted thatthe changes she had tomake were permanent.

Its a permanent wayof losing weight. The

focus is on. When we takethe best care that we canof our bodies, the weightcomes off, she said.

She also said there wasa struggle in the begin-ning, but that she was ableto fight through it.

The first two or threeweeks, there was astruggle. I was cravingcottage cheese, and itscalled toxic hunger.

Toxic hunger is whenpeople get headaches, shakiness and withdrawalsymptoms from not eatingthe high-fat, sugary foodsthey may be accustomedto having.

But Bollers hope moti-vated her through thedifficult weeks and heradvice serves as an inspi-ration for others.

If we make it throughthe withdrawal time, ourtaste buds change and wedont want to go back to

eating a lot of high salt, processed foods.

She said if chickennuggets, steak or pizzawere placed in front ofher, she wouldnt eat it,simply because afterdetoxing from thosefoods, the desire for themis gone.

Thats what make itspermanent, she said.

It has now been threeyears that Boller hasmanaged to keep off the

weight she initially lost. When she interviewsothers who have doneFuhrmans plan, shenotices the change in themind-set of people whohave read the book.

Talking about peoplewho have reversed heartdisease and reduced theirmedications, Boller said, this is for life. This isnt

just for eating to diet.Fuhrman has a popular

show on PBS and wentto med school with Dr.Oz, Boller said. Fuhrmanwill visit Fort Wayne in

    March.The artist and writer

withdrew from theconsumer market andwent on to produce preci-sion mechanical devices, including some used inthe Apollo Lunar Excur-sion Module and F-4Phantom fighter planes.

Through a series ofacquisitions and mergersit ultimately became part

    of White ElectronicDesigns, and control

shifted to a corporateheadquarters in Phoenix. In 2010, within a weekafter it sold i ts Fort Wayneoperations, that companywas acquired byMicrosemi Corp., notedBowmar sales managerTim Anderson.

If Main Street hadntpurchased the business, it

would have closed, putting more than 40 local

workers out of their jobs.Anderson began

working for Bowmar the first time in 1973and was brought backafter Main Street investorspurchased the company. He remembers a timewhen its front-line busi-ness was what is knownas design-to-spec. The

entire second floor ofBowmars Bluffton Roadplant was filled with engi-

neers who designeddevices to meet specificcustomer needs.

Over the years, the busi-ness devolved more tobuild-to-print, in whicha customer provides thedesign and the companycreates the deviceaccording to those plans.

    We lost our engi-

    neering capacity,Andersen said.

    Worse yet, the Fort

Wayne plants ownershad developed a milkingstrategy. They did notinvest in the business. They just took cash out,Benson said.

Because Bowmar hadbeen milked no one wasgoing out and findingcustomers, or looking atwho are our competitors

    and suppliers, Bensonadded.

Still, the build-to-printbusiness kept the opera-tion going. In fact, a lotof what we produce arethings that Bowmardesigned 10, 20 years ago.Its legacy business,Andersen said.

The build-to-printbusiness is a great base, but its not got the growthpotential, noted Goldner. We dont start off theyear at zero.

    The first thing Ruffolo

Benson and Main Streetdid was put in a new

board of directors, all ofwhom with the excep-tion of Goldner wereinvestors.

The key is to have alocal board to work on thedirection of the company,Benson said.

The decision to bringback the Bowmar namecame when Goldner,

Ruffolo and others werehaving lunch anddiscussing what to call thenewly acquired business.

It was sort of like a bigduh of course! Wehave customers who stillknow us as that, Goldnersaid.

Although Goldner wasworking with thecompany in her role asMain Streets president, itwasnt until after she losther bid for re-election tothe Fort Wayne CityCouncil that she was

brought on board full timeas president.

It worked out well forthe company that Karenwas available because ofthe election, Benson said.I think Karen can have asgreat an impact on thecommunity doing this asbeing on the CityCouncil.

Goldner only expects tobe in the job for a year orso as the companydevelops its new strategy.

When it is time, herreplacement likely will besomeone with a moretechnical orientation.

    Karens skills areorganization-building

skills, which is what weneed right now, Bensonsaid.

My reason for beinghere is to continue movingthe company ahead onsome organizational andinfrastructure things,Goldner added. Im notan engineer. It amazes mewhat our folks here can

    do.In fact, the company

already manufacturesparts to far higher toler-ances a fewthousandths of an inch than its equipment wasdesigned to handle; andworkers hand assemblecomponents from tiny

slivers of metal and wire.We have some really

very talented people,Goldner said. Theassembly work involved isall bench assembly. Itsvery fine.

    Its almost craftsmanlevel, Andersen agreed.

    Bowmars two mainproduct areas are

keyboards/control panelsand gearheads and gear-related components.

At the time Main Streetacquired the business, nobody knew what theupside was for thoseproduct lines, Andersensaid.

    But we found that

there is a market for gear-heads in aerospace anddefense, and there will befor some time.

Aerospace and defenseproduction Bowmarmakes components usedin Virginia classsubmarines, for example requires higher stan-dards of performance as

    well.The kind of imperfec-

tions we live with in a

Droid phone, maybepunching the keypadseveral times, is not sogood in an airplane,Goldner noted wryly.

Partly for that reason,Bowmars work forcetends to be older.

It can take years to getup to speed, Goldneradded.

    A REALLY BAD DAY

    Frozen Pipes

    February oten brings the lowest

    temperatures o the year. Protect

your homes water pipes rom the

bitter cold with these simple steps:

    Eliminate Drafts. Tightly close

    crawl spaces, vents and doors.

    Repair broken or cracked basement

    windows. Insulate gaps, cracks and

    anywhere cold air penetrates.

Insulate Pipes. Install heat tape or

pipe insulation in crawl spaces and

unheated parts o your home, garage

    and outbuildings.

    Remove Outdoor Hoses.

Exterior aucets and hoses are frst

to reeze. Remove or the season

between October 15 and November 1.

Keep a Trickle Running. When its 10

degrees or less, a thin stream o water

running at the tap arthest rom the

    water meter helps prevent reezing.

    So does opening cabinet doors,

allowing warm air to reach pipes below

    sinks. Always remove cleaners and

    chemicals dangerous to small children.

    Protect Your Water Meter.

Water meters are oten located in the

    garage. Leaving your garage door

open just a ew inches (or pets or by

accident) can reeze your water meter

and block water ow to the entire home.

I this happens to you, call Aqua Indiana

customer service. I other pipes reeze

and you can locate the blockage, thaw

with a handheld hair dryer. I this ails, call your plumber immediately.

Weve been lucky with an unusually

mild winter so ar. But, February can be

    2012 Polar Plunge

    bigger, betterin fifth year

    Funds to benefit Special Olympics

    Indiana and Allen County

On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Parkview Field concoursewill be taken over by some brave souls, each personfreezin for a reason at the 2012 Fort Wayne PolarPlunge.

The event raises money to provide year-round sports

training and athletic competitions for children and adultswith intellectual disabilities through Special OlympicsIndiana and Allen County. The organizations rely oncorporate, civic and individual donations to keep theprogram alive and receive no federal- or state-appropri-ated funds.

Were celebrating this year with something bigger andbetter than ever to bring in more of a draw, said plungeco-chair Julia Fiechter. The Mike Thomas and AssociatesRealtor has been a Special Olympics volunteer andfundraiser for years.

In a new twist on an already popular event, a new, unused dumpster filled with ice-cold water, donated byRepublic Services, Inc., will be setup on the ParkviewField concourse, 1301 Ewing St. Daredevils will take theplunge at noon, and participants who raised the mostmoney will enjoy a luxurious hot-tub soak sponsored byMaster Spas. Its a pretty good incentive to raise the most

money, considering the average February high in FortWayne is just 34 degrees.

I know, it sounds crazy and it is and its cold,Fiechter said.

To participate, each individual must raise at least $75 inpledges to benefit Special Olympics. Prior to the event,

Rifkin venture puts money behind movieRobot & Frank was shown at Sundance

Danny Rifkin never thought aboutgetting into the filmmaking business. The music business, perhaps. He leftcollege for a time in an unsuccessful

search for fame and fortune as arock musician. But that was it as far as my

vision of entertainment went, saidRifkin, former CEO and co-owner ofOmniSource Corp. And then myfocus quickly changed to a scrap(metal) operation after that.

Its odd then and even headmits this that an independentmovie financed in large part by awholly owned subsidiary of RifkinsNorth River Capital LLC debutedJan. 20 at the prestigious SundanceFilm Festival in Utah.

Robot & Frank, starring FrankLangella and Susan Sarandon, isabout a curmudgeonly old loner and

his caretaker robot. Frank and therobot first become friends, accordingto a synopsis provided by NorthRiver Capital, and then partners inunexpected adventures that give themovie universal appeal.

    North River Capitals White Hat

Entertainment is the majorityinvestor in the film, and it is NorthRiver Capitals first foray into theentertainment industry. The FortWayne-based privately held equitycapital firm, Rifkin said, is moreaccustomed to focusing on acquiringindustrial manufacturing companieswith significant growth potential.

This is certainly a differentthing, he said.

North River was formed in 2008by Rifkin, his brothers, Rick andMarty, and three other former execu-tives of OmniSource, which waspurchased by Steel Dynamics Inc. in2007.

We started North River at a timewhen the economy was in prettyrough shape, and we were able tofind a number of good companies toacquire, Rifkin said. And then itseemed like the quality of the oppor-tunities diminished for a time, and sowe started to seek out other kinds of

niche things, whether it had to dowith oil drilling and exploration ormovies.

Rifkin, managing partner of NorthRiver, was eventually introduced tothe founders of New York-basedPark Pictures Productions Jackie

Kelman Bisbee in particular andthat led to White Hat Entertain-ments involvement with Robot &Frank.

Park Pictures Productions isamong the minority investors in thefilm.

Rifkin said its conceivable NorthRiver and White Hat will invest inother film projects, including thoseorchestrated by Park Pictures.

Were open to it, Rifkin said.(Park Pictures) vision is to buildup a film library and have ParkPictures Features continue toproduce and direct and distributeindependent films.

In the meantime, Rifkin isenjoying all that goes along with thecurrent movie. He said he found anearly screening of Robot & Frankentertaining and he attended themovies Sundance premier.

Its exciting, he said. Itcertainly is exceeding what our

expectations were when we gotinvolved with the Park Picturesfolks.

The whole structure of the enter-tainment business has been veryinteresting to learn about and werecontinuing to learn.

A love lost and found againA love story 30 years in the making wins the Greatest Love Story of all Times contest

It was New Years Eve, Dec. 31, 1998. Deanna Linn

and Mike Hathaway stood inside the Denver InternationalAirport looking at each other face-to-face for the firsttime in 30 years she with a heart full of hope and hewith an apology he hoped she would accept. So verymuch had happened during their years apart.

Their story begins where they both grew up: Celina,Ohio. Then, she was Deanna Linn, an athletic girl wholived at the lake with a tight-knit family that included abrother and sister. Mike lived with his parents and twoyounger brothers and was a year ahead of Deanna inschool.

After graduation, both Mike and Deanna started jobs intheir hometown. He was a gas station attendant and shebegan her 30-year career in insurance at Celina InsuranceGroup.

Shed pull into that gas station with her girlfriends andshe was a cute little thing, Mike said. She looked pretty

attractive to me. When I was told by other friends thatshed like to go out on a date, boy I jumped at that.

The two dated steadily for a year. They ran aroundtown with their close friends, Bruce and Janet, a couple

who would become an important part of their love story. They remembered it as a wonderful, exciting time in theirlives.

Then, like so many others were during that time, Bruceand Mike were drafted into the Army and sent to trainingcamp in Fort Gordon, Ga.

Eventually, Mike was shipped overseas to Camp Evans,a large base camp in North Vietnam. Mike was part of the1st Signal Brigade of the 63rd Signal Battalion, whichprovided signal and communications for the 101stAirborne in and around the base camp area. It was anexperience that would change Mike forever.

Meanwhile, Deanna and Janet carried on with theirlives in Celina.
