assistants to be confirmed. We hope you all enjoy your short stay with us and have a safe journey back home later on.

Our search for a win in 2015 continues. Last weekend’s match away at Milton United was extraordinary to say the least. We should have been at least three or four goals up at half time after playing our most scintillating football of the season in the first half.

However, we failed to take our chances and they improved second period to score the only goal of the match although it should have been ruled out for offside but that mistake from the officials aside, we should have put the game to bed by that point.

Abingdon had a poor start to the season with only eight points after thirteen matches (the thirteenth match was a 3-1 loss to us) and then appointed the vastly experienced Gary Ackling as manager and things has picked up since then.

It is fifteen points in the last fourteen matches which sees the Yellows on 23 points and although still third bottom, they have clawed up the points on those just above them and are almost out of the relegation zone.

This week they have secured the services of striker Richie Guy and former Shrivenham player-manager Sam Collier so have more Hellenic quality in their ranks.

Our youth team had a fantastic 4-2 victory over Binfield on Wednesday night which sees us three points clear although Farnham Town remain title favourites with their games in hand. There is a statement about us rejecting a move to the Blue Mountain site in this programme - see page 8.

Thank you for your continued support.

The club had its sights on higher things and five years later entered the Hellenic League. Since then it has remained in this league and during this time had success in the lower divisions. In 1965/66 they won the Division One Challenge Cup and the following season were the cup finalists.

No further honours came the clubs way until winning promotion in 1976/77 to the Premier Division. After a struggle at this level, relegation back to Division One came after four seasons.

With a more ambitious approach, the club bounced back into the Premier League where it has remained ever since. It also won the Division One Cup in the same promotion year. Senior status was achieved in 1985 allowing it to be eligible for the F.A. Vase, County Senior Cup and in 1989 entered the F.A. Cup for the first time.

A Members Room, Function Room, Covered Stand and Floodlighting have been completed in recent years to improve the off pitch facilities. 1996/97 has seen the club complete its 50th season and it’s most successful. United won the final of the Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy and also winning the League’s Floodlit Cup. The highest ever league position was attained whenfinishing as Runners Up in the Hellenic Premier Division. The following season again saw success come to Northcourt Road with retaining the County Senior Trophy, Hellenic League Reserve Championship and Allied Counties Youth League winners.

2001 saw the construction of new changing rooms, together with turnstiles, to the Northcourt Road Ground and 2005 saw the construction of a new 150-seater stand and a covered stand.

The club clinched promotion to the Southern League in season 2005/06. In season 2013/14 Abingdon re-joined the Hellenic League after voluntarily resigning from the Southern League.

As most people are aware, Blue Mountain Golf Course is closing this April as the land has been allocated for development in line with Site Allocations Local Plan Policy SA7 which was adopted by Bracknell Forest Council in July 2013.

The development (if planning permission is accepted) will include houses and education provisions but will NOT include Bracknell Town Football Club moving to the site.

BTFC had been in discussion for several months with Luff Group (who own the Blue Mountain site) about selling our Larges Lane site to them and part of the deal would have included land at Blue Mountain for us to develop and build a new stadium.

Unfortunately, the Board of Directors at BTFC have taken the decision to reject the proposed offer for Larges Lane for a number of reasons.

We feel the offer is below what we class as a fair offer for Larges Lane whilst the plot offered to us at Blue Mountain has reduced in size over the last several months and more importantly the usable size has also reduced.

The purpose of moving to Blue Mountain was to enable us to have all of the clubs team’s right from U7’s all the way up to the Over 55’s walking football team including the adult men’s team and adult ladies teams playing at one site.

However, the offer does not allow us to achieve this so we feel it is in the best interests of BTFC to remain at Larges Lane for the foreseeable future.

We will now focus our efforts in repairing or redeveloping Larges Lane moving forward.

If an opportunity arises in the future to move to a larger site offering sufficient size to enable us to progress then we will look into it but for now, all our efforts will be focused on Larges Lane.

Young Robins top the Christmas tree #coyRobinsBracknell Town took a huge step forward in the Allied Counties Youth League South this evening with a terrific 4-2 win at rivals Binfield.

Robins were 3-0 up inside the opening quarter of an hour thanks to goals from Tom Symss, Sean Hanley and a Tiaan Coetzee penalty. Bins hit back before the break but former Mole Connor Thorndike scored a fourth for Bracknell from Elliott Garrington’s free-kick.

The home side did net again but Bracknell held on to take a three point lead at the top of the table.

start as his side defeated hosts Abingdon United 3-1. Victory was also the team’s first in eight matches to break a poor run of form.

With goalkeeper James Hawtree suffering injury in the week, experienced stopper Garry Aulsberry was drafted in and he gave the side a solid foundation to build upon from the back whilst Grant Goodband also returned following his two game suspension.

The first chance came as early as the second minute with Graham Edney racing in but Aulsberry denied him with a fine save.

The visitors had a vociferous penalty appeal waved away on ten minutes as Khalid Senussi was shoved over inside the area but they did not dwell on it as Senussi opened the scoring just over a minute later.

Tom Barratt’s long ball released full-back Michael Watson down the right hand side and his great pinpoint cross was met by Senussi who superbly volleyed in to cap a fine move.

Shane Cooper-Clark then had a couple of chances but saw an effort blocked before he met Jordan Rowland’s cross but could only head at goalkeeper Lee Farrow as the Robins were well and truly on top.

It should have been two goals in the 28th minute as Senussi scuffed a corner which fell kindly to Goodband and his flick on perfectly picked out his central defensive partner Andre Kelly but he fired over from four yards out.

Abingdon responded well though and soon had a foothold in the match putting the visitors under a bit of pressure and Anaclet Odhiambo really should have scored but he narrowly missed the right post from a great position.

Half Time: Abingdon United 0 – 1 Bracknell TownEdney had the ball in the back of the net on 48 minutes but it was rightly ruled out for offside and the Bracknell defence had all stopped anyway following the referee’s whistle.

The second goal came in the 66th minute after Kennie Chamberlain was fouled with Cooper-Clark curling in the resulting 21 yard free-kick into the bottom left hand corner.

Aulsberry was beaten in the 71st minute but it took something special to get past him. Odhiambo squared the ball to substitute Ellis Langford who took one touch

Substitute Harry Brown sealed the victory with his 85th minute header. After Bradshaw was felled, Rowland curled in an excellent free-kick with Brown stooping down low to head beyond Farrow only two minutes after his introduction.

There was still time for another chance with Cooper-Clark getting on the end of Sam Whiting’s corner but the striker’s header struck the left post.

It was a great victory on a top draw playing surface for Bracknell and attention now turns to Tuesday evening when Holyport visit Larges Lane.

Garry Aulsberry - Experienced goalkeeper who joined the club from Binfield in October after injury to James Hawtree and has been in impressive form. Previously played for Wokingham & Emmbrook.

Michael Watson - A quick and attacking right back who came through our youth system. ‘Mikey’ was arguably our most consistent player last season turning in steady performances on a weekly basis.

Harry Brown - Young defender who joined us from Farnborough. Can play at full back but has mostly been used at centre half. ‘H’ has proved to be a classy and quick addition.

Tom Williams - A strong central defender who can also play in midfield. Was previously with Binfield where he played a large part in their reserve team title win. Doesn’t lose many aerial battles.

SponsorNeeded

Andre Kelly - Andre joined us from Finchampstead wanting to try his hand at Hellenic Premier Division football. A very composed and cultured central defender who also chips in with a few goals.

Sponsored by TC

Taylor Elliott-Money - In his second spell at the club having featured regularly under Steve Nebbett and Danny Oliphant. Comfortable at full-back and in midfield.

SponsorNeeded

Dan Money - Another player who followed Ed Carpenter from Binfield. Mostly used in our reserve side last season where he played in the centre of the park. A good tackler who gives his all every week.

SponsorNeeded

Tom Nugent - ‘Nuge’ is as strong as an ox and can play in midfield or defence. Scores a lot of headed goals and is a player we miss through being away at university for large parts of the season. An-other who progressed through our youth system.

Tom Barratt - Tom is a talented youngster who progressed through our youth team. Best in midfield and with a powerful shot, he has a great attitude and can also play at the back although he prefers midfield.

SponsorNeeded

Sam Whiting - New club captain for the coming season and is a very cultured midfielder. Primarily playing a central role, he will be the heartbeat of our team and will look to dictate our tempo.

SponsorNeeded

Kennie Chamberlain - Kennie is yet another who came from Binfield and he too was a regular in our reserve side last campaign. Likes to play an attacking central role, ideally behind the striker or strikers whom he can support.

SponsorNeeded

James King - ‘Simba’ also came through our youth system and joined us midway through last season from Wokingham & Em-mbrook. A good dribbler of the ball who likes to operate in the space between midfield and attack.

SponsorNeeded

Martin Bradshaw - Our most versatile player having played almost every position bar goalkeeper last season. Quiet and unassuming, ‘Bradders’ does a job wherever he is asked to play and without any fuss. Prefers to play as a wide attacker.

SponsorNeeded

Charlie Evanson - Pacy striker who made an impressive debut for the club, and followed up with a brace against Oxford City Nomads in his second game for the club.

SponsorNeeded

Khalid Senussi - Another player who joined from Wokingham & Em-mbrook. Khalid is a skilful player more adept at playing in a wide position who tries to find pockets of space to operate in.

SponsorNeeded

Jake White - Came through the clubs youth system where he excelled as a striker before converting into a right-back. Now back playing as a striker where his blistering pace causes problems for opposition defences.

SponsorNeeded

Shane Cooper-Clark - A good target man who can link play very well and looks set to be a key component of our striking options this season. Previously clubs include Ascot United and Wokingham & Emmbrook.

Sponsored by SteveGabb

Lewis Burns - One of a trio of players who joined us from Wokingham & Emmbrook. Lewis also came through our youth system and had a good goals to games ration last season.

SponsorNeeded

Ebby Opoku-Ware - A regular for our youth team and reserve team last campaign and also played a couple of first team matches. Arguably our most skilful player with plenty of tricks up his sleeve, he should not be underestimated despite his tender years.

“Sam did a fantastic job. He came in during an incredibly tough time for the club and was superb,” Dore said. “We are sorry to see him go, but we understand his reasons. Michael McNally (pictured) will take charge now until the end of the season. There are still plenty of points to play for and we will look at how we take the club forward at the end of the season.”

HELLENIC PREMTables and League news

Shrivenham chairman James Dore will give Michael McNally until the end of the season before making a decision on a permanent replacement for Sam Collier, who has resigned as manager.

A 35 yard effort from Natalie White and a Michelle Melia (pictured) free-kick from the edge of the area were enough to send Bracknell Town Ladies Reserves into the final of the Thames Valley Region Women’s League Plate.

Robins had chance after chance in the first half but were unable to convert until White spotted the goalkeeper off her line and shot from 35 yards out. Visitors Summertown hit back in the second-half and levelled the match before Melia’s superb free-kick nestled in the far corner of the goal.

The reserves travel to Holyport on Sunday, while the first team have a cup semi-final at Milton Keynes Dons

Jen Mulleady #coyRobinsJenny was voted Bracknell Town Ladies player of the month for November and is a hard-working member of the Ladies first team having made 11 appearances this season.

A teammate commented on her award - Jen never let’s the defence down, she solid at the back and will bust a gut to get back to defend.

Place of Birth: Oxford

Position: Defender

Club supported: Chelsea

Best game played in and why? Think I would have to say the game away to Fleetlands Fc. We went with 11 players and Sean was on holiday so had no manager or any help. As a team who had a couple of new players and hadn’t played many games together we all battled for the whole 90 mins and everyone put in 100%. It was a tough match but felt great getting our first win of the season and lifting the team spirit.

Funniest moment in football? Can’t really pinpoint just one. The funniest part of any Sunday for me is the banter all the girls have between each other and our manager Sean.

Ambitions for the season:To work on my confidence and become a stronger and better player and try to score at least one goal

Best ground played at:Would have to say Portsmouth when we played on the 4G pitch

PROFILEDefender Jen Mulleady

As a regular feature, we’ll be catching up with members of the 2014/15 ladies team as they progress in the Southern Region Women’s League, and Thames Valley Region Women’s League.

In 1976 the TV show Superstars was a big deal.

It pitted athletes from a variety of different disciplines against each other in sporting competition. For some reason that seems almost unfathomable now, the public loved watching (for example) an alpine skiier playing ping pong against a basketball international.

And so it came to pass that in 1976 the Superstars Roadshow took Heat Three of their championships to our very own town of Bracknell. The venue to be used was Bracknell Leisure Centre, which was until recently used by our reserve team side for home fixtures, and the event was to be cycling. Belgian football captain Gilbert van Binst and Kevin Keegan were to face off on the running track in a 470m cycling sprint.

As soon as the starting pistol sounded it was clear that Keegan was in trouble. The front wheel of Keegan’s bicycle was visibly wobbling which was in stark contrast to the Belgian’s steady progress, and it was van Binst who sped into the first corner, slightly in the lead. Undaunted, Keegan ploughed on with a look of stern determination on his face.

Then, the inevitable. Keegan’s front tyre clipped the back of van Binst’s rear tyre, sending the England captain across the gravel track in a large plume of dust. In spectacular fashion his ride was over. Keegan lay desolate on the Bracknell gravel.

He was quickly seen to by a member of St. Johns Ambulance and despite his protestations to interviewer Ron Pickering in the aftermath of the fall that he was “fine” it was clear that he had been left with nasty abrasions and cuts on his back and arms. Keegan commented to Pickering: “these people here in the stands have come to see me make a fool of myself and they’ve got a right to it”. He bravely re-rode the course and achieved the second best time of the cycling event. He would go on to win the entire heat earning himself $5000.

It’s slightly sad that we won’t see such an event in Bracknell again. It’s very unlikely Manchester United will allow Wayne Rooney to career around a gravel track on a road bike with only a pair of tight shorts for protection. But maybe that’s for the best.

James Bartaby is a new visitor to Larges Lane having moved to the area recently. He has a blog covering Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Bracknell Town at theopladenway.wordpress.com and runs the excellent undertheleague.com

With the winter break now well underway (this article was scheduled originally for 3rd January programme) in Germany’s top flight, it’s a time when supporters can take stock of their clubs’ hinrunde (first half of the season). For fans of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, its a case of evaluating the first six months under new management. Roger Schmidt took over in the summer after Sami Hyypia was sacked towards the end of last season, and the key word right now for Schmidt’s Leverkusen has to be inconsistency.

Last season at this stage, the werkself were second at Christmas with thirty seven points after twelve wins and a draw. This year sees them a place lower and, more importantly, nine points worse off. However, there are real signs of progress under Schmidt. New players like Wendell, Tin Jedvaj and especially Hakan Calhanoglu have brought some much needed flair to the team, while Bernd Leno has been fantastic in goal behind the equally impressive defensive pairing of Omer Toprak and Emir Spahic.

The main problem has been the amount of draws; seven so far, and most of them have been from winning positions. They have only lost three games, but the inconsistency has come about due to the amount of stalemates, and performances in general at times. The system Schmidt is trying to implement is based on a high intensity pressing game, coupled with quick attacks. That is bound to result in some frustrating games and results, but there are genuine signs now that the players are coming to terms with what is being asked of them. The last seven games saw the team lose just once, and that was only a single goal reverse at runaway champions Bayern Munich.

The biggest concern has to be the form of striker Stefan Kießling. The club legend has netted just three league goals so far, and has often looked out of place in Schmidt’s revolution at the club. Often he seems to slow the play down, and is not finding himself in goalscoring positions as often as he should be. If he can fit himself into the system, and start feeding off the creativity of the likes of Calhanoglu and wingers Heung-Min Son and Karim Bellarabi, then we should see the goals flow.

The second half of the season - the ruckrunde - should be very interesting! Leverkusen’s next fixture is home to Borussia Dortmund on 31st January.

At first glance, it looks an elaborate wind-up. A team called FC Santa Claus, plying their trade in Lapland? Are you eight months late or four months early with that April Fool’s Day jibe? Yet it’s perfectly true, and there’s no time like the present (ho ho!) to take a look at Finnish football’s wonderfully-named side.

FC Santa Claus were formed in 1993 from an amalgamation of two sides: Rovaniemen Reipas and Rovaniemen Lappi. The Finnish city of Rovaniemi is the administrative capital of Lapland, just six miles south of the Arctic Circle – hence the name change. Since their formation, FC Santa Claus have had moderate success, flitting between the Kakkonen and Kolmonen leagues – Finland’s third and fourth divisions respectively.

The club aren’t just named after everyone’s favourite festive figure: they embrace the seasonal silliness. The team play in red and white – of course – and the club crest depicts your traditional red-suited, white-bearded Santa, sat checking his list. Twice, obviously.

However, FC Santa Claus aren’t just for Christmas. For understandable meteorological reasons the Nordic leagues take place in summer, and a year after their formation our heroes won the Midnattsolscupen (Midnight Sun Cup). The tournament – in which games are played in the evening and midnight, as the name suggests – is hosted every July in Sweden, with teams mainly from the host country, but also from Finland, Norway and Russia.

Bombs and promotionFinland’s most festive lower-leaguers play at a multi-purpose stadium called the Keskuskenttä. Built and opened in 1953, Kekuskenttä once hosted a European Cup Winners Cup game (between Rovaniemen Palloseura and Albanian KS Vllaznia Shkodër, in 1989) – but there was nearly a more explosive story here.

While digging up the stadium’s grass pitch in the summer of 2009 – to be replaced by third-generation artificial turf with undersoil heating, both very necessary in these parts – the work crew discovered a German World War II artillery shell. It was 105 millimetres in size and quickly had to be removed and safely detonated by the Lapland Air Defence regiment, no less.

Presumably suffering a less lethal aerial bombardment, FC Santa Claus were relegated back into the Kolmonen back in 2012. But like Saint Nick rallying the workshop elves, the club worked hard together and this

September, forward Jaako Paavilainen’s goal gave them a 1-0 victory over Rotuaarin Pallo, confirming them as Kolmonen champions and sealing their return to the Kakkomen. From their 20 league games FC Santa Claus totted up 50 points and 104 goals: not a bad bunch of season’s beatings.

Although the club and players are understandably involved mainly for the entertainment, promotion means a lot, as club spokesman Jouni Toyras confirms: “We’re happy to show people that we’re in this for fun, but we also take it seriously as you can see from our fine results.”

Despite other strong contenders for strange names in world football – Club Deportivo Morón, the Botswana Meat Commission Football Club and Norwegian side Fart FL – FC Santa Claus has to be up there with the best of them. With the Kakkomen league looming once again, it would take a Scrooge not to wish this wonderful little club the best of luck in the coming seasons. After all, it is Christmas.

The Kakkonen

Kakkonen or II divisioona is the third level in the league system of Finnish football and comprises 40 Finnish football teams. The II divisioona was introduced in 1973 and in the mid-1990s became known as the Kakkonen. (Finnish for ‘Number Two’; Swedish: Tvåan). Sakari Tukiainen finished the season 2014 as the top goal scorer and setting a new league record with 40 goals for the Kakkonen. Source: Wikipedia.

League structure

Every club plays each of the others in the same group three times. Clubs gain three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. The group winners may win promotion to Ykkönen while two bottom clubs of each group and weakest 8th ranked club will be relegated to Kolmonen. Source: Wikipedia.

of all time. WOKING FOOTBALL CLUB.

Woking FC may now be at the top table of non-league football in the Vanarama Conference, but there was a time they crossed paths with Bracknell Town on a regular basis as this programme unearthed by Cards twitter historian Mark Doyle (aka @cardinal_tales) shows.

163 people watched this 0-0 draw in what was a tremendous season for Bracknell according to fchd.info as they finished second in the Vauxhall Opel League (now Ryman League) Division 2 South and won promotion to Division 1, while Woking finished third and just missed out.

Bracknell Town’s team was: Kevin Greenaway (GK), Dave Caffell, Micky Sergison, Colin Sturgess, Tony O’Connor, Paul Maynard, Richard Whitty, Keith Young, Willie Graham, Steve Duncan, Peter Gray, Micky Burgen.

For posterity, the Woking line-up was: Chris Lomas, Adie Cowler, Lloyd Wye, Adie Probert, Colin McDonald, Justin Horner, John Cassidy, Paul Jablonski, Dave Lansley, Maurice Cox, Clive Youlton, Danny McGranighan.

Woking of course went on to bigger things after finishing a place behind Bracknell in the 85/86 season. Woking won Division 2 South in 86/87 and Bracknell were a heartbreaking point from promotion to the Premier Division (which would have been their highest level in history), pipped to the post by Leyton Wingate and Leytonstone Ilford.

Bracknell finished 19th in 87/88 and relegated the season after while Woking picked up consecutive third place finishes before two promotions in three seasons saw them in the Conference.

The Cards never looked back at that point and went on to record a famous 4-2 FA Cup win over First Division (now Premier) West Bromwich Albion in January 1991.

Bracknell of course have history in the Cup, but today it is all about Dover Athletic, Blyth Spartans, Southport, Gateshead (who ironically face West Brom) and Wrexham. From 31st Jan v Ardley Utd we’ll be taking a look back at old Robins programmes
