Spotlight on...

Abidjan is the former political capital and primary economic center in the country of the Ivory Coast. It is a developing, coastal country in West Africa. As of 2011 it is the largest city in the nation and the third-largest French-speaking city in the world, after Paris and Kinshasa, DRC.

1999 marked the beginning of a decade of political unrest. This culminated in violent clashes during the 2010-11 elections. The country has largely stabilized under the current administration, however tensions are on the rise as the 2015 elections approach. These will be the first elections since 2010.

The Ivory Coast remains largely politically divided and reconciliation is vital to prevent violence from breaking out again in the October 2015 elections.

Population (2012) • City-province 4,476,397 • Density 2,100/km2 (5,500/sq mi) • Urban 7,108,647 • Language French

4. Ask God to bless the youth of Abidjan who are not victims of change but agents of change! Ask for God to show Himself to the youth during mission week. Ask for grace over Michael Cassidy and John Njoroge as they speak with the youth tonight.

5. Pray for the civil servants, lawyers, and medical practitioners of Abidjan as they hear the message of the Gospel at different times throughout the day. Ask God to open their hearts to the truth of the Gospel and that they would go away from the meeting ready to affect change in their environments.

6. Pray for the teachers, academics, police and military personnel who will hear the Gospel today. Ask that God would have a profound impact in their hearts and that the change made in them will have an effect for generations to come.

7. Pray for the closing rally of the Mission in Abidjan. Pray many will come to know the Lord and a new wave of Godly leadership will rise.

8. Pray for all those travelling back to their homes following mission week. Pray for protection & safety. Pray also for rest following a busy time.

9. Pray for God’s favour and blessing on the nation of Ivory Coast and improved living conditions for the people of Abidjan.

10. Pray for all new believers in Abidjan -- that they will be filled with peace and joy that cannot be extinguished by daily hardships.

11. Pray that the leaders of Abidjan have come to experience the depth of God’s love for them. “I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

12. Thank God for His protection of the AE team whilst away carrying out the mission to the city of Abidjan.

13. Give thanks to God for Pastor Aphelly and Pastor Quattara who led the mission steering committee and who spearheaded this initiative on the ground in Abidjan.

14. Pray that the Spirit of God’s love rules in the hearts of Christians across Abidjan and that this brings peace and justice for all in Ivory Coast.
