Being a Management Trainee in DSV is an opportunity that many would long for in our Industry. Not only do we get a chance to learn from different departments, but the hands on experience make it more effective. I personally was drawn to the process of movement of cargo from door to door and wanted to experience it firsthand. My first opportunity arrived soon when the Sea freight team decided to involve me in the shipment of Flat Track Containers headed for China.According to the process, we always escorted the loaded truck from the plant to the CFS (two different corners of the city) for custom clearance. The best time to do this was at night which meant a good 100 km drive. At the shipper’s factory, I got a chance to look at the over dimensioned cargo- 11.5 ft. wide, 10.8 ft. high and weighed 28 tons.

We started around 11:30 PM with the truck running at 50KMPH (thanks to the cargo). We were soon stranded because of a punctured tire and with a load of 34 ton on board, changing a tire seemed like a herculean task. Even with the support of 2 jacks, the low bed trailer was not ready to move. Time was of essence as we had to move the cargo before daylight to the CFS for clearance.Post two hours of labor and some smart thinking, we managed to lift the jack and change the tire, finally the trailer was on its way. We managed to move into the CFS at the break of dawn.My first experience with a Project cargo was definitely a special one as it involved more than just escorting the cargo. Just highlights the fact how minor things can lead to delays and how timely action can help us override them.
