Fatih Sultan Mehmet (Mehmet the Conqueror)

Leaders are the ones who know how to motivate people. They have to be strong

enough to lead the masses and intelligent enough to rule people. In history, there are

some leaders that will never be forgotten, and Mehmet the Conqueror is one of them.

He will be remembered as the man who started a new era in the history of mankind.

His experience and education contributed to him being considered as a military genius

of his time.

His father was the Sultan Murad and his mother was Valide Huma Hatun. So he

was born and raised in a noble family and he knew that he would the Sultan of the

future. He was aware of this when he was so young and at the age of eleven he was

sent to Amasya to govern there. Once there was a problem in the country and it was

difficult to overcome that problem. So he called his father but his father didn’t want to

deal with the situation. Then he wrote a letter to his father and said: "If you are the

Sultan, come and lead your armies. If I am the Sultan I hereby order you to come and

lead my armies." It was only after receiving this letter that Murad II led the Ottoman

army and fixed the situation.

Since his early childhood his father tried to educate him. He wasn’t an  easy boy

and he wasn’t getting  well with his teachers. Then his father sent Molla Gurani to

educate him. His father gave a stick to Molla Gurani and told him to use that stick if

Mehmed disobeys him. Mehmed didn’t take it seriously and was beaten by his

instructor. This was a turning point for him and he accepted that even a sehzade, the

future Sultan, should listen to his instructor. He was interested in literature and he wrote

some poems with the nickname of Avni. He let the philosophers to discuss in front of

him but he wasn’t brutal to any of them. He was respectful to ones who had different

ideas.

He was military genius. Hi ordered his soldiers to pull the ships over the land and

he wanted to have huge cannons which were never seen before. He took the name

‘conqueror’ after he won the war against Byzantines. He was tolerant against the

countries he connected to his country. He ruled the Ottoman Empire for 30 years and

he was a very brave soldier. He took place in front of his army in the wars and he

encouraged his soldiers.

In conclusion, rarely in the history we see a man with strict rules together with

tolerant behaviors. His military achievement is the results of the education he got and

the experiences he already had before being the sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He is

famous for his ability to negotiate with the other nations and having the qualities of

being a great soldier and a statesman.
