Abductor and adductor muscles are muscles that move in directions that people normally don’t think about. When approaching fitness, generally people stick with exercises that go up and down or forward and back such as squats, deadlifts, bench press and pullups. However, the body doesn’t just move in a forward/backward up/down direction. It also moves side to side, and that is where the adductor and abductor muscles come in. Abductors take a limb away from the body and adductors bring it to the body. These muscles contribute to the stability of other lifts, and their strength can help you keep from getting injured. For example, if you do squats and your knees duck in during the motion, then your hip abductors are weak and you aren’t lifting as well as you could be.

The way to strengthen these muscles is by doing things that activate them, obviously. You do that by moving within their ranges of motion. Lateral shuffles, side lunges, fire hydrants and band walks will all work the abductor muscles, and will in turn help to stabilize the joints that they are connected to. These exercises aren’t the glamorous, traditional ones like bench press or squats, but they are arguably just as important.

The key thing to remember is that abductor and adductor muscles aren’t necessarily the most aesthetic muscles, but they are there and they are important. A person will never be able to truly reach their fitness goals if they have deficiencies in the stabilizing muscles, because you will always be able to lift more or run more efficiently if the muscles are properly developed.
