I n t h e s e c o n d group t h e p a i n o c c u r s a f t e r t h eo n s e t , a n d s o m e t i m e s a f t e r t h e c o m p l e t e s u b -s i d e n c e o f t h e t h r o a t i n f e c t i o n . H e r e t h es e v e r i t y i s much more m a r k e d , a n d t e n d e r n e s s ,t h o u g h r a r e l y r i g i d i t y , i s a f e a t u r e . T h e s ec a s e s , I b e l i e v e , c o u l d v e r y well f i t i n w i t hB r e n n e m a n n ' s e x p l a n a t i o n o f a d e n i t i s .A c h i l d t h r e e y e a r s o l d , h a d h a d t o n s i l l i t i s

a b o u t f o u r d a y s p r i o r t o t h e o n s e t o f s e v e r ea b d o m i n a l p a i n . When seen, t h e c h i l d was i n asevere paroxysm o f p a i n , h o l d i n g t h e a b d o m e n ,a n d d o u b l i n g over. T h e r e was a d e s i r e t o movet h e b o w e l s , b u t w i t h o u t r e s u l t . T h e t e m p e r a t u r ewas n o t e l e v a t e d . T h e t h r o a t was s t i l l r e d , t h ep u l s e 1 2 0 . U r i n e c o n t a i n e d n e i t h e r a l b u m e nn o r pus. T h e a b d o m e n was not d i s t e n d e d , t h e r ewas g e n e r a l t e n d e r n e s s more marked over t h el o w e r h a l f . R e c t a l e x a m i n a t i o n was n e g a t i v e .U n d e r h o t compresses, a n d a l i t t l e p a r e g o r i c , t h ep a i n g r a d u a l l y s u b s i d e d .

I h a v e seen t h r e e cases somewhat s i m i l a r t ot h e o n e j u s t c i t e d . I n t h e s e i t i s q u i t e con-c e i v a b l e t h a t a m e s e n t e r i c a d e n i t i s was respons-i b l e f o r t h e p a i n . I t i s easy t o see ho w i n sucha c a s e , w i t h t h e c o n t i n u a t i o n o f symptoms, onem i g h t b e t e m p t e d t o s u g g e s t l a p a r o t o m y , as d i do c c u r i n some o f t h e c as es r e p o r t e d byB r e n n e m a n n .
