Residency Year Oral History Project Interviewee:  Abdel Kareem Alashigh Interviewer:  Hasan Karayam Date of Interview: May 29, 2013 Place: Alshigh’s House, Sorman, Libya.  Transcriber:  Hasan Karayam Hasan. I have met Mr. Alashigh, the political freedom fighter in the city of Janzour on the 29 th of May 2013 to talk to us about his struggle for freedom in the Libyan  political scene during the 1950’  s and1960’s, especially, concerning the U.S Libyan relations and what went on in the political realm at that time. Mr. Alashigh, Could you please tell us a brief account on the position that you have held and also your date of birth with some personal information? Alasigh. I was born in September 1927 in Sorman; I am Seventy eight years old now. I have finished my studies in Britain when I received a call from Mansur Gadara, who was sent by my father asking me to come back to Libya to work with the just formed temporarily government. They needed those who knew foreign Languages; actually I was selected for the fact that I spoke English and Italian fluently. So I returned to Tripoli upon my father’s request and I was informed that I was being hired as a secretary in the foreign department in the transitional ministry That was on the 15 th of March 1951, when I started working at the ministerial office located in the Red Castle at the Martyr Square Mansur Gadara had informed me that Mahmud Al Muntasir, the then Prime Minister, along with his cabinet would arrive on the 25 th of March, ten days after I started the job. Ha. After 10 days? Al. So I visited the office in the Red Castle and found out that the Italians who were responsible of the archaeological section had left only 7 desks in the last floor and I was told that those desks would be used by us! Of course the country was new to me;
