' We'sort'of'picked'the'project'up'where'the'previous'groups'had'left'off.''They'

were'seeking'to'find'a'way'to'create'taller'and'more'attractive'recycling'bins'made'

from'recyclable'material.''Their'arguments'were'that'the'current'bins'are'too'far'

and'few'between,'they'are'short'and'therefore'hard'to'see'and'fill'up'quickly.''They'

had'talked'to'Kristina'Bogdanov'about'a'model'for'these'bins'and'about'how'to'

make'a'material,'similar'to'paper'mache,'with'which'to'construct'the'bins.''It'is'a'

very'simple'process'of'taking'shredded'paper'and'water'and'blending'them'

together'and'then'pressing'the'pulp'that'is'produced'into'a'thick'paper/cardboard.''

The'idea'was'to'use'all'recycled'materials'so'that'the'bin'itself'is'environmentally'

friendly,'unlike'the'current'plastic'ones'that'can'be'found'in'the'science'center'now.'''

They'also'chose'to'make'then'in'the'shape'of'a'triangular'prism.''This'way'they'can'

sit'together'and'at'the'same'time,'attract'people’s'attention'more'and'hopefully'

inspiring'them'to'recycle.'''

' We'went'and'talked'to'Kristina'about'the'project.''She'explained'the'process'

to'us,'and'explained'some'of'the'issues/questions'that'had'arisen'along'the'way.'

These'included'where'they'could'be'constructed'and'how'to'attach'the'sides'

together'in'an'environmentally'friendly'manner'while'still'keeping'the'bins'

attractive.''She'said'the'next'step'would'be'to'make'a'small'scale'model'of'a'full'size'

bin'to'test'out'how'the'paper'mache'would'hold'up'with'increased'size'and'what'

could'be'used'for'fastenings'could'be'used.''The'size'would'be'useable,'maybe'desk'

size'but'not'yet'full'scale.''She'said'that'we'could'use'a'piece'of'plaster'that'the'

ceramic'studio'had'already'poured'and'usually'used'to'wedge'clay'on'as'well'as'the'

Ceramic'studio'blender.''All'we'needed'was'a'plywood'frame'and'the'shredded'

paper.''We'went'Jon'Quick'for'help'with'building'the'frame.''We'were'able'to'find'

some'scrape'plywood'in'the'woodshop'and'cut'it'down'and'staple'it'together'so'that'

we'had'a'frame'to'sit'on'top'of'the'plaster'slab.'

' Getting'the'paper'was'not'too'difficult;'there'are'recycling'bins'all'over'

campus.''However,'getting'it'shredded'was'another'story.'We'ended'up'shredding'it'

in'the'Science'Center'Office.''We'walked'around'and'collected'paper'from'different'

bins'and'then'put'it'through'the'shredder'and'kept'what'we'collected'in'the'bag.''

This'took'quite'a'lot'of'time'and'was'rather'tedious.''Luckily,'Lydia'was'able'to'help'

us'out.''She'works'in'the'Registrar'and'asked'them'to'save'the'paper'for'us.''They'

were'happy'to'do'this'and'had'a'huge'bag'for'us.''This'paper'was'also'nicer'because'

it'was'shredded'in'two'directions,'which'made'it'easier'to'turn'into'pulp'in'the'

blender.'''

' 'The'first'time'we'made'a'sheet'of'the'mache,'we'were'a'little'unsure'of'what'

we'were'doing.''We'ended'up'making'it'a'little'too'thin,'the'edges'were'particularly'

weak'and'broke'in'a'few'areas.'''The'second'time'went'much'better;'we'added'a'lot'

more'water'to'the'mixture,'which'made'the'blending'much'easier.''We'also'made'

the'board'thicker'which'made'it'sturdier'but'it'also'took'longer'to'dry.''They'should'

be'about'¼'to'½'an'inch'thick'for'the'boards'to'be'sturdy,'hold'their'shape'and'not'

warp'in'the'drying'process'or'humidity.''The'third'board'was'also'made'the'same'

thickness.'We'wore'out'the'blender'halfway'through'making'this'one'and'had'to'

make'a'quick'trip'to'WalYMart'to'purchase'a'new'one.''We'had'been'warned'that'this'

might'happen'and'that'it'was'likely'that'turning'the'paper'into'pulp'would'burn'

though'blenders.''Other'than'that'the'process'went'smoothly.'We'ended'up'going'

through'3'blenders'total'so'something'to'definitely'think'about'would'be'investing'

in'a'more'heavyYduty'blender.'''

' As'of'right'now'the'project'is'not'very'environmentally'friendly'because'it'

destroys'so'many'blenders'and'just'sends'them'to'the'landfills.''Another'suggestion'

would'be'to'make'the'plaster'thicker'so'that'it'will'suck'the'water'out'of'the'paper'

mache'faster'and'lead'to'quicker'drying.''It'might'also'be'advisable'to'have'multiple'

slabs'so'that'you'can'rotate'between'them'so'that'they'have'time'to'air'out.''When'

we'built'our'bins'we'just'made'square'slabs'and'then'cut'them'apart'for'the'

different'parts'of'the'bins.''They'were'not'very'easy'to'cut'and'broke'or'ripped'when'

we'did'this'at'times'so'it'would'be'easier'if'frames'were'made'for'each'of'the'

sections'so'that'this'cutting'could'be'avoided.'''When'it'came'to'joining'the'sides'we'

had'some'trouble'trying'to'find'a'way'to'join'them'in'a'green%manner.''We'could'not'

get'this'to'work'so'we'ended'up'using'gorilla'glue'and'then'covering'the'seams'with'

more'paper'pulp.''For'the'bottom'we'just'used'the'paper'pulp'without'the'glue'and'

it'seemed'to'hold'up'ok'so'this'might'be'something'to'consider'in'the'future.''

Another'idea'for'joining'them'that'we'did'not'get'a'chance'to'test'was'building'some'

sort'of'frame'that'they'could'fit/slide'into'or'Kristina'suggested'using'a'cooked'

down'rice'paste.''
