Welcome to the extraordinary world of pest control.

Four thousand rats are born in London every hour and sightings of mice in people’s homes have doubled in a year. Sales of DIY kits to tackle all things creepy and crawly have soared. It’s fair to say that pests are starting to become, well....a pest.

Two people who aren’t bothered by them however, are brothers Ricky and Jimmy Clark. Whether it’s tackling wasps in a loft or laying down glue traps for mice, these born and bred Londoners stop at nothing to get rid of pests.

Alongside Ricky and Jimmy is the other team member, Charlie, Jimmy’s nine-year-old Jack Russell terrier. He’s the best rat dog in town.

Charlie specialises in catching live rats in people’s homes. Most companies use a concoction of poisons to kill rats, but Charlie flushes out the rodent and breaks its neck with one shake of his head in about two seconds.

From scruffy old bedsits to tree-lined mansions, this documentary series follows the Rat Pack as they tear across London dealing with all creatures great and small.

Episode one follows a day’s work for the Clark brothers and Charlie. Their clients have problems ranging from a dead rat behind a fridge, a pigeon caught by two house cats, a maggot-riddled rat in a cellar, a serious bed bug infestation, a mysterious dead cat and a rat that Charlie manages to sniff out and pursue.

In the middle of all this, Charlie gets a good health check from his vet to make sure he is not infected by the vermin he comes in contact with during his duties.

The daughter of Hollywood royalty – actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher – Carrie Fisher became famous as Princess Leia in Star Wars.

But at 24, after drink and drugs problems, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Carrie talks to Dr Pamela Connolly about what it was like to have her father leave home for Elizabeth Taylor when she was one and a half; about marriage to Paul Simon; her relationships with gay men; and her 35-year battle with mental illness.

As a child, she saw her father more often on TV than in reality. And her mother once suggested Carrie have a baby with one of her husbands.

However, Carrie tells Pamela how she always tries to see the comedy in her life. “You can live on one side of a magnifying glass or the other,” she says. “I like to live on the side which makes big things small. You meet a better class of person there.”

Cold Feet

Things are not going well for Adam and Rachel. “Life is elsewhere I don’t have the address,” he opines. Rachel’s perspective, however, is that Adam is driving her mad with his childlike antics and obsession with watching TV. Adam is also letting his mind wander from Rachel as he takes a keen interest in their glamorous young neighbour.

Pete and Jenny are going through a similarly difficult patch as they find that they are tied to their home because of baby Adam, and have no social life.

Rachel offers to babysit for them so that she can get away from Adam for a night, but sitting opposite each other in a restaurant Pete and Jenny find that if they disallow conversations about the baby they have nothing to talk to each other about any more.

David and Karen are seeing a marriage guidance counsellor after their aborted attempts at adultery in the last episode. Or rather Karen is seeing a marriage guidance counsellor as David initially refuses to go along with her. After their session, however, things seem to be on the mend and they are told that they should try and ignite the passion in their relationship by going on a date together.

Movie: Three Came Home

Following the 8:30pm repeat screening of John Wayne Season: Flying Leathernecks, comes a powerful feature starring Claudette Colber. Three Came Home tells the story of authoress Agnes Newton Keith, who spent three harrowing years in a Japanese prison camp.

At the outbreak of World War II, the Japanese descended on the islands of Borneo and rounded up civilians putting them in POW camps. Newton, her husband and child were among them. Life in the prison camp was extremely hard, and the prisoners were made to suffer humiliations, hunger, beatings and forced to slave in the rice fields.

Colonel Suga (Sessue Hayakawa), a man educated in the US, and an admirer of Newton's writing, ran the camp. He was a man torn up inside by a struggle between his conscience and his duty to his government.

It is a film where no side appears to be the better - the Japanese are brutal, but some have a sense of morality. Among the captives there are selfish and weak people, as well as those who show fortitude and a strong spirit in times of great stress.
