Motel Deception is an immersive dance experience combining TV, dance and an interactive website. Chrissie Parrott, one of Australia’s foremost choreographers has created a four-minute dance work as its centre-piece.

The ABC, Screenwest and the WA Department of Culture and the Arts, commissioned the dance work, four-minute film, documentary and website as part of the iArts initiative. iArts is a vibrant collaboration between WA producers and artists who create interactive projects screened on ABC TV and online.

The ABC is hosting a website for Motel Deception the centre of which will be a mash-up tool where users can create their own dance piece. They can choose from a gallery of footage to develop their own version of Motel Deception.

This week, Sunday Arts presents a short six-minute documentary which looks at the development of the dance film and the website. The following Sunday, Motel Deception, the dance film will air. In the film, two contemporary dancers portray the journey of two characters in a seedy motel room.

The producer, Nancy Jones, explains a unique component of the initiative. “We’re hoping when people visit the web page, they’ll see the film and then want to take up the opportunity to make their own dance film. The website contains over 350 different clips of the film, shot from various angles, so a person could look at a particular shot or movement from the top, the side and other views. It is interesting to see what works on film, how you film something, how it looks.”

To check out Motel Deception - the website, where the film can also be viewed, visit www.abc.net.au/tv/moteldeception

Sunday Arts will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, November 01 at 7:30pm

Rainforest: The Secret Of Life

Sunday, 1 November 2009

The rainforests - beautiful, mysterious and enigmatic – are time capsules from long ago that carry the genetic inheritance of millions of years of evolution. They are home to half the living species on Earth, yet so much of the rainforests’ elaborate web of life is waiting to be discovered.

In Rainforest: The Secret Of Life a 3-part series narrated by Jack Thompson, we discover the fascinating rainforest right on our doorstep, in Australia, one of the driest climates on earth. It’s on the East coast high up the slopes of the extinct Mt. Warning volcano. This giant old volcano boasts the largest erosion caldera in the southern hemisphere and can actually be seen from space. It is located on the Queensland/New South Wales border, within sight of the coast. This area is also at the junction of the sub tropical and temperate climate zones and is one of the most prolific and diverse wildlife habitats in Australia.

Using this stunning rainforest environment as an example of rainforests worldwide the series explores their ancient origins, travelling back millions of years to the time of the giant supercontinent Gondwana. Featuring a fascinating body of very rare and unusual Australian wildlife behaviour such as the mating display of the Alberts Lyrebird and the Regent Bowerbirds’ display and mating in the bower and the brush turkey repelling a carpet python from its egg. All these remarkable sequences combine to illustrate the complex nature of the web of life that has evolved in this particular rainforest and that is typical of rainforests globally.

Wuthering Heights

Sunday, 1 November 2009 Final

The day after Cathy (Charlotte Riley) and Edgar’s (Andrew Lincoln) wedding, Heathcliff (Tom Hardy) surprises Nelly (Sarah Lancashire) by arriving at Thrushcross Grange unannounced.

Cathy and Heathcliff’s love for one another is insurmountable. Alone on the moors together, Heathcliff can see that there is guilt in her eyes. He knows that she has slept with Edgar and his outrage fills Cathy with an overwhelming sense of betrayal.

Heathcliff’s appetite for revenge grows and Hindley (Burn Gorman) is coerced into selling more land. Heathcliff’s courtship of Isabella leads to a furious argument with Cathy. Edgar’s attempt to force Heathcliff to leave is met by Cathy’s hostility and Heathcliff’s vicious retaliation. Edgar tells Cathy that if she wishes to remain friends with Heathcliff she must also leave but Cathy reveals that she is pregnant with Edgar’s child.

Isabella informs Heathcliff of Cathy’s pregnancy and they leave Gimmerton together to marry. Heathcliff knows that he can never be free from his love for Cathy. When they return to Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff learns that Cathy has become gravely ill. Cathy and Heathcliff are reunited one night at Penistone Crags amidst a raging storm.

Heathcliff comes violently close to killing Hindley and Isabella leaves him. Heathcliff persuades Nelly to let him see Cathy and holds her dying body in his arms until Edgar arrives. As Cathy breathes her last breath, Heathcliff waits in the garden. Cathy’s baby daughter, Catherine, lives.

Eighteen years pass and Edgar is dying. Heathcliff has forced Catherine (Rebecca Night) to marry his son, Linton (Tom Payne), and upon Edgar’s death, Heathcliff takes over the Grange. Linton has been sick for months and dies only weeks after his marriage. Catherine lives at Wuthering Heights with Nelly and Hareton (Andrew Hawley), the late Hindley’s son. Catherine grows fond of Hareton and when Heathcliff’s life comes to a sudden end, is there some hope of happiness for Catherine and Hareton’s future together?

Ashes To Ashes

Monday, 2 November 2009

When a violent burglary occurs at Alex’s (Keeley Hawes) in-laws’ house, she comes face-to-face with their son Peter: the 14-year-old future father of Molly!

Alex is desperate to help Molly’s grandparents all she can, but Gene (Philip Glenister) – wanting a big collar to bury the press stories of police corruption – dismisses the case as trivial.

When the fingerprints from the crime scene reveal the burglar was George Staines (a notorious gangster, now supposedly dead), Gene realises this could be the catch he is after. Alex remembers hearing stories about the burglary in her old life, and is convinced that she would remember if the culprit was as infamous as Staines.

Gene is determined to uncover the truth and get the headline he deserves, but will Alex’s loyalty to her in-laws and pent-up resentment of her ex-husband lead her down the wrong path? Alex finally gets to meet the mysterious man who has been circling her – and he arrives with a proposition: is her desire to get back to Molly strong enough to become a corrupt copper?

A Thousand Encores: The Ballets Russes In Australia

Tuesday, 3 November 2009

One hundred years ago Diaghilev founded the Ballets Russes in Paris. Seventy years ago this company was to change Australia forever.

A Thousand Encores is the story of how the greatest ballet company of the 20th century – the celebrated Ballets Russes - came to Australia and awoke a nation, transforming the cultural landscape of the conservative 1930s, leaving a rich legacy that lasts to this day.

In 1936, the celebrated Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo stepped off a boat into the bright Australian sunlight. With exotic sets and costumes designed by cutting edge artists and avant-garde music by great composers like Stravinsky, the Ballets Russes inspired Australians and they clamoured for more.

Over five years from 1936 to 1940 the company came to Australia three times, winning the hearts and minds of Australian audiences and inspiring a generation of our greatest artists - Grace Cossington Smith, Jeffrey Smart and Sidney Nolan.

At the end of the Australian tours in 1940, a number of Ballets Russes dancers chose not to return to war-torn Europe. They established ballet schools and companies in their new country, inspiring further generations of Australians with a passion for dance. These pioneers set the stage for professional ballet in Australia today.

QI

Tuesday, 3 November 2009

QI, hosted by Stephen Fry is the world’s most impossible quiz.

On the face of it, QI (short for Quite Interesting) is a TV comedy panel game like any other. It has a chairman and four contestants who are asked questions and get points for their answers. But there the resemblance ends.

The questions on QI are so difficult that the panellists almost never get one right. So the chairman only gives points for interesting answers, regardless of whether they are correct, or even relevant.

This episode features Alan Davies, Jo Brand, Hugh Dennis and Phill Jupitus.

River Cottage Autumn

Wednesday, 4 November 2009

The champion of local seasonal food, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, continues to cook and taste abundant produce from root vegetables and game to fruits from the orchard.

This week Hugh is trying to match keen gardeners who don’t have access to land with landowners, and get the nation growing their own veg. He meets Sue who has been sharing her friend Stephanie’s garden in Totnes since spring. Now, practically all her fruit and vegetables are provided by this small plot and the whole enterprise has cost her little more than $54.

Hugh also plans a big dinner with a twist for the River Cottage team: all the key ingredients will be foraged as two teams compete in a dawn to dusk challenge gathering mushrooms, nuts and fruit from the surrounding lands and the occasional motorway. With a batch of nettle beer and squirrel ragout on the menu it’s bound to be a success.

The Bristol smallholding families expand their livestock and take delivery of three milking goats. Armed with the goat farmer’s best instructions, they get to grips with the milking and vow to give Hugh his first consignment of goat cheese.

Spicks And Specks: 80's Special

Wednesday, 4 November 2009

The 80s are back… on Spicks And Specks

Get out your legwarmers, shoulder pads, fluoro tee-shirts and Cyndi Lauper CDs as host ‘Ant’ Hills and team captains Alan Brough and Myf Warhurst take a trip down memory lane to celebrate the music, dance and fashion of the decadent 80s.

The suitably 80s-attired guests are the uncanny Brian Mannix, Chantoozie Ally Fowler, Captain Cocoa’s Dave O’Neil and comedienne George McEncroe.

Myf gets into the spirit by reliving a classic 80s moment, Dave scores a piece of long-lost memorabilia, Brian gives his lowdown on some 80s bands, and Ally shares a Chantoozie anecdote that makes Brian blush.

As an extra incentive to win tonight’s game, the teams vie to take home a classic 80s collectable: a Prince Charles and Lady Diana commemorative engagement plate.

John Safran's Race Relations

Wednesday, 4 November 2009

John’s been reading books on Jewish marriage versus intermarriage. The Jews want him to get together with a Jewess, saying that if he marries out, anti-Semitism will inevitably creep into his cross-cultural union. It’s true – some people are racist, but does that really mean John has to stop hitting on Eurasians?

A concerned John hurries off to the United States where he meets with Walid Shoebat, former Muslim terrorist. John discovers that Shoebat’s racism and desire to kill Jews were quashed when he watched Fiddler on the Roof. To test whether the Jewish musical can reverse the effects of racism, John hightails it to Palestine, dressed as the story’s main character, Tevye. He visits the Hamas and Fatah organisations, and Palestinian TV, testing out musical performance in the face of militant anti-Semitism.

Satisfied by his efforts to de-brainwash Islamic terrorists, John comes to the realisation that he too, has been brainwashed by Jewish guilt. Furious at being played like a two-dollar chump-machine by the Jewish community, John finds a non-Jewess and runs off with her to the Netherlands and gets outrageous in Anne Frank’s attic.

John concludes that his indoctrination can’t be easily shaken, as it began just after birth, when he was circumcised by a rabbi. Enraged, John hastens again to America, where he gives himself over to Wayne Griffiths of NORM (the National Organization for Restoring Men) for a hands-on circumcision reversal.

Grand Designs Revisited: Islington

Thursday, 5 November 2009

In this episode Kevin McCloud follows two very unconventional architects, Jeremy Till and Sarah Wigglesworth, as they build their dream home in the trendy London borough of Islington.

Sarah and Jeremy are determined that the house should be experimental and evolve as it is constructed. That means no schedule and little idea how much it is going to cost. All the materials arrive late or need to be altered in some way, including the straw bale walls.

To show how a completed straw bale house can look, Kevin builds his own on a much smaller scale on a plot in Somerset.

On Kevin’s final visit to the site, only the shell of the house is complete.

Kevin revisits the house five years after his last visit and finds a house that reflects the passions and the interests and the foibles of its owners.

Francesco's Mediterranean Voyage: Goodbye Venice

Thursday, 5 November 2009 New Series

It is a few days before Francesco da Mosto sets out on the biggest adventure of his life – sailing from Venice to Istanbul – retracing the trade routes of his ancestors in a sailing clipper from the 19th century.

But before he leaves his home in Venice there is research to do for the voyage, new skills to acquire - not least gaining the respect of the crew of The White Swan with whom he will spend the next few months in cramped quarters and sometimes dangerous situations as he visits the greatest treasures of the Mediterranean.

Before he leaves, Francesco visits the Doge’s Palace for reminders of the greatest age of Venice when the city’s empire stretched across the Mediterranean and – the day before departure – he marks the Festival of the Redentore, a fantastic night of Venetian celebrations and fireworks. Next day, the reality hits - of a marathon trip ahead, saying goodbye to his family – and most important for a good Italian son, obeying the demands of his mother - the blessing of the boat for a safe voyage.

Addicted To Money

Thursday, 5 November 2009 New Series

Addicted To Money is THE program for anyone who wants to know how the financial crisis came about, what it means for us now, and what we can do to create a sustainable economy. Biting and punchy, this three-part series is a survival guide for the ‘New Economy’, presented with wit, charm and incisive appeal by David McWilliams, a young economist who talks just as candidly to the most influential and powerful players in the global economy as he does to ordinary people.

In the first episode of this polemical series, David McWilliams establishes that we have not just been living through a global recession, but what amounts to a coordinated economic crime. The banks were not only in control, but also out of control. The financial industry established what was effectively a drug syndicate, pushing the most dangerous addiction of all, easy credit. “When even the suburban bank manager has become a drug pusher, things are seriously unhinged,” says McWilliams.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:An Electric Pictures production, produced in association with ABC TV, RTE Ireland, S4C UK with the assistance of Screen Australia, Screen West and Lotterywest. Director: Simon Nasht; Writers: Simon Nasht and David McWilliams; Producers: Andrew Ogilvie and Andrea Quesnelle; Executive Producer: Andrew Ogilvie; ABC TV Commissioning Editor: Dasha Ross.

Midsomer Murders: The Electric Vendetta

Friday, 6 November 2009

John Nettles as DCI Tom Barnaby and Daniel Casey as Sergeant Gavin Troy star in the fourth series of Midsomer Murders. In episode three, The Electric Vendetta, a long-held grudge of forty years triggers a series of deaths disguised as alien abductions.

When a series of bodies are found in mysterious crop circles in the cornfields of Sir Harry Chatwyn, squire of the village of Midsomer Parva, it looks like a case of extra terrestrial kidnapping. Two bodies, bearing the classic hallmarks of alien abduction – burnt fingers, a puncture wound to the lower back and a chunk cut out of the hair - seem to provide evidence that UFOs do exist.

But when Inspector Barnaby and Sargeant Troy dig deeper, it seems there could be a far more simple explanation for these deaths – cold blooded murder motivated by greed, love and jealousy. It’s another tangled web to be unravelled in one of the Midsomer villages by Barnaby and his faithful sidekick.

Saturday, 7 November 2009

A young child is found alone on a busy street, and says that his name is Thomas, and that someone called Clara is dead.

A search of local nursery schools establishes his identity, and his mother Rebecca Sands (Ruth Gemmell) arrives to explain that Clara Nowak (Noeleen Comiskey) is his nanny, and would never have left him unattended.

As DI Neil Manson (Andrew Lancel) and DC Grace Dasari (Amita Dhiri) try to piece together the pair’s movements that morning, Rebecca reveals that Clara uses her car to drive Thomas to nursery, and says that sometimes they pass by a construction site because he likes to see the cranes.

That clue helps locate the car, where police find Clara lying unconscious.

Meanwhile, CCTV footage reveals that a man seen running away from the boy is Jared Miles (Brett Goldstein), a petty-thief with a history of mental illness.

As neighbours at Rebecca’s apartment block are questioned, one, Julia Bickham (Emily Hamilton) says her boyfriend was suspicious of a dark car parked nearby on a few occasions. Also, officers observe that Julia’s car is very similar to the one Clara was driving.

Back at the station, the mention of Julia Bickham’s name has DI Manson on full alert. Could she be the psychiatrist he tried to save not so long ago when one of her patients was threatening her life?

Compass: Small Town Salvation

Just over a year ago the people of Cumnock (pop. 300), a tiny town four hours drive west of Sydney, were presented with a radical idea. Cumnock resident Christine Weston suggested that they offer their empty farmhouses to people from the city. The families would pay only a dollar a week but they would have to do some basic repairs on their houses.

The town has embraced this ‘real-life’ experiment that could resonate across Australia. The scheme was launched to save the local primary school, but many families have come to escape the ‘rat-race’ and find out if life is indeed ‘happier’ in the country. How will this experiment play out? Goodwill abounds on both sides but can it last? Eighteen families, mostly from the city, have moved into empty farmhouses (‘renovators’ delights’) for a peppercorn rent. Differing values and moral codes are on the line. What role do traditional institutions like the church and local council play? By following families and key players, including the local Anglican priest, Compass examines Cumnock’s unfolding story.

Talking Heads

This week on Talking Heads, on the eve of the Melbourne Cup, Peter Thompson’s guest is a member of Australia’s racing royalty – David Hayes.

Hayes was just 26 years old when he took over the running of Lindsay Park, Australia’s most successful racing stable.

His first runner was a winner and there was better to come. Hayes trained the first and only Australian horse to win the prestigious Japan Cup; he set a world record of training six group winners in one day at the one race meeting (Derby Day at Flemington); and he won the 1994 Melbourne Cup with Jeune.

As the son of Colin Hayes, racing was in his blood. But as a teenager his dream had been to become the best footballer, runner or triple jumper the world had ever seen.

Find out why David Hayes swapped athletics for the ‘Sport of Kings’.

8:00pm

The New InventorsHosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors showcases the best new Australian inventions, from the innovative to the inspirational, the weird and the wonderful. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: engineer James Bradfield Moody, designer Alison Page and futurist and author Mark Pesce. Inventions featured on the program:

JAMBOT – by inventor Toby Gifford from QLD

These days technology plays an ever-increasing role in live music. Musicians will often use backing tracks or looping pedals to augment their sound, but these technologies are not responsive to what's happening on stage. This means that important aspects of performance such as human timing variations are often lost, and musicians are forced to be slaves to their machines, following drum machines rather than people on stage. Toby Gifford is a musician, mathematician and computer scientist, about to finish a PhD in music technology. His unique collection of knowledge and skills got him thinking about how to improve and enhance technology's role in live music. The Jambot is a musical robot that listens to what is being played and jams along. The computer software can play along with a band or improvise beats to a record being played by a DJ. The invention uses new state-of-the-art music perception algorithms to 'listen' to the musicians and respond to the way the music changes. The technology can jam along to any audio signal, listens and responds to real musicians live on stage, and improvises depending on the music that is being played.

CARRY MASTER – by inventor Allan Barber from VIC and Victor Taranto from QLD

Supermarket shopping trolleys are usually heavy and unwieldy and can be unmanageable in small areas and sloping surfaces such as car parks and footpaths. The heavy metal trolleys often cause damage to property such as parked cars when people lose control of them. In addition to this problem, Australians still use around 6.9 billion plastic bags per year, and 50-80 million end up in our environment and waterways. The Carry Master is a collapsible, highly manoeuvrable, multi-terrain trolley with the ability to carry multiple re-useable bags attached via a saddle. It can handle up to 32kgs of goods and can move easily over any terrain.

ROCHE WRAPPER – by inventor Glenn Roche from VIC

Shrink-wrapping is a packaging technique used in industry to secure items to a pallet. The problem is that most people can’t afford a big specialised machine to do this, so they have to do it by hand. It’s not easy to do properly and it’s a back breaking task. The Roche Wrapper is a safe, ergonomic way of wrapping pallet loads with plastic film for transportation. It is simply wheeled up to the job and then regulates the tension of the film as it is wrapped around the pallet. It even safely cuts it off when you’re finished.

The New Inventors will be repeated on ABC2 – Friday, November 06 at 4:30pm
