The Extraordinary Tale Of William Buckley

Sunday, 11 April 2010

Presented by historian Michael Cathcart, The Extraordinary Tale Of William Buckley is a dramatised documentary that tells one of Australia’s great untold stories. On a stifling hot Christmas night in 1803, 23-year-old William Buckley, a young English convict, escapes from the doomed first settlement of Port Phillip Bay in South Eastern Australia, choosing instead to risk the unknown of the hostile Australian wilderness rather than surrender his freedom.

Thirty two years later, in 1835, a wild looking white man emerges from the Australian bush with long hair, a beard, dressed in skins and carrying spears. It’s William Buckley, long presumed dead. His account, of living for thirty-two years with an Aboriginal tribe before white colonisation, is a tale of love, violence, mortality and loyalty. It’s one of the greatest survival stories ever told.

A former soldier, William Buckley was transported to Australia for receiving a bolt of stolen cloth. But rather than face a life in shackles, he escaped from the first settlement of Port Phillip Bay. Months later and on the point of starvation, Buckley fatefully takes a spear from a recently dug grave to use as a crutch. When a group of Wathaurong Aborigines discover him they believe he is the warrior Murrangurk, the owner of the spear, returned from the dead. He is taken in by the family of Murrangurk. Marrangurk’s brother Torrenauk becomes his ‘brother’.

Over the years, Buckley becomes a Wathaurong tribesman, learning to hunt and fish and speak their language. He witnesses many battles, cannibalism and various tribal customs. He endures hardship - tragically losing his family in a clan killing, and finds great happiness - falling in love with a young woman who stays with him for many years. He grows into middle age, part of a world utterly different to the one into which he was born. But in 1835, Buckley’s world is turned upside down when John Batman’s advance party for settling Melbourne arrives. Unbeknownst to them, the local Wathaurong tribe is planning to attack and kill the intruders and steal their provisions. Imagine the new arrivals’ surprise when a six and a half foot giant of a wild white man emerges from the bush and it turns out, he can speak English! Buckley now stands between two worlds that are about to collide. Can he prevent bloodshed? Whose side is he on, white or black?

Near the end of his days, Buckley sat down to tell his story to John Morgan, a journalist with an eye for a good yarn. Buckley’s rich and detailed account offers a fascinating and often surprising portrait of life in an ancient culture before white colonisation. It is one of the most extraordinary survival stories ever told.

Tess Of The D'Urbervilles

Sunday, 11 April 2010 New Series

This passionate, sensual and very modern version of Thomas Hardy’s world-renowned novel is brought to life by some of Britain’s best young, upcoming acting talent together with many recognisable and much-loved faces.

Filmed in Spring 2008 at a variety of locations in the English West Country counties of Wiltshire, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Dorset, Tess Of The D’Urbervilles is a thrilling story of seduction, murder, cruelty and betrayal. Whilst unstintingly gorgeous and romantic, this new adaptation is an intense, moving and provocative depiction of the hauntingly tragic story.

Gemma Arterton (James Bond: Quantum Of Solace, St Trinian’s, Lost in Austen) stars as Tess, the spirited heroine; Hans Matheson (The Virgin Queen, Dr Zhivago) plays her nemesis, the arrogant Alec d’Urberville who seduces her; and Eddie Redmayne (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Savage Grace) is Angel Clare, with whom she falls in love.

As this drama opens, the beautiful and innocent Tess Durbeyfield, dressed in white, dances in the May Day celebrations in her village. She catches a glimpse of a handsome stranger, but he ignores her.

Later Tess is driven by family poverty to claim kinship with the wealthy D’Urbervilles and seek a portion of their family fortune. Here she meets a very different man – the manipulative and fraudulent Alec. Will her innocence prove to be her downfall?

Britain From Above: Man Made Britain

Tuesday, 13 April 2010

Andrew Marr looks at how some of the greenest, most natural-looking landscapes of Britain’s islands have in fact been shaped and moulded by human hands over the centuries.

From the scars of ancient settlements to suburban splatter and sprawl, from medieval farming to farming by satellite, Andrew is taken back in time to the ancient ‘wild wood’. With the help of revolutionary new aerial technology he discovers Iron Age forts lurking in the forests.

Man Made Britain shows how towns grow organically rather than in an orderly fashion and how planners try to control that growth with greenbelts. Extraordinary lengths are taken to preserve national parks as artificial but beautiful playgrounds and the most rugged landscape is used as the ultimate flight simulator for testing Britain’s most ferocious military hardware; the Eurofighter.

QI

Tuesday, 13 April 2010

Hosted by Stephen Fry, QI is the world’s most impossible quiz. On the face of it, QI (short for Quite Interesting) is a TV comedy panel game like any other. But there the resemblance ends.

The questions on QI are so difficult that the panellists almost never get one right. So the chairman only gives points for interesting answers, regardless of whether they are correct, or even relevant.

In this episode Stephen Fry and his guests are gallivanting round the globe with G for Geography.

Tonight’s panellists are: King of the Jungle, Jimmy Carr; The Queen of the Desert, Jo Brand; The Prince of Port Talbot, Rob Brydon; and the Man in the Moon, Alan Davies.

Artscape: Ben Quilty And The Maggots

Tuesday, 13 April 2010

Since winning the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship in 2002, Ben Quilty’s rise as one of Australia’s leading young contemporary artists, is nothing short of phenomenal. Today, at only 36, he has a retrospective survey of his work touring.

Quilty’s signature is paintings so thickly laden with luscious applications of paint that they literally ooze. Despite his success, it seems Quilty has never quite exorcised the hoon in him. His abstract interpretations of the booze-fuelled world of Australia’s suburban bloke’s culture have won him many fans.

“As a young man growing up in Western Sydney in the late 80s I’ve always felt that I grew up during a time where men felt uneasy and unsure about their place in society,” explains Quilty. “Recently, I read Germaine Greer’s essay On Rage. I was struck by the relevance her arguments had for, not just indigenous men, but male society generally. Young men’s zealous risk-taking behaviour—21sts, bucks parties and alcohol fuelled head-wettings are absurd and dangerous modern day initiation rites. But where society has failed to find a way to create meaningful initiation processes for young men, we’ve had to come up with our own.”

Offering some compelling insights on manhood in the program is Germaine Greer. “The sculpting of the male into the masculine creature—it’s an unusual thing for a ‘bogan’ to do— to become an artist,” offers Greer wryly. “Ben’s clearly not a ‘bogan’—he’s got a pretty strong feminist side that has somehow survived all of his own attempts to burn it out.”

Quilty won the Moran Prize for portraiture in 2009 with a ‘wasted’ depiction of rock legend Jimmy Barnes entitled There but for the Grace of God Go I, No 1. Barnes says, “He’s seen what I’m like so he knows that I’m as bad as any of his mates... As much as Ben is a wild bloke himself he’s also extremely sensitive...”

Grand Designs Revisited: Islington

Thursday, 15 April 2010

This week Kevin McCloud visits the improbable build of two architects who built their central London house out of straw bales, springs, nappy cladding and sandbags.

Jeremy Till and Sarah Wigglesworth bought a former industrial site in the fashionable and highly sought after area of Islington. Both Jeremy and Sarah are architects and this project is the first time they’ve designed and built their own home from scratch.

Their approach of ‘making it up as they go along’ causes on-going problems. There are many delays and budget blow-outs. The over-complicated design proves expensive and stressful. Eventually Jeremy and Sarah bring in an associate to take over the day to day responsibilities of the build.

Meanwhile, inspired by Jeremy and Sarah’s use of straw bales, Kevin decides to build his own straw bale studio at his property in Somerset.

Five years after they started their ‘research’ project, Jeremy and Sarah finally finish their house and office. The property has a life of its own and reflects the idiosyncrasies of its owners.

Secrets Of Shangri-La: Quest For Sacred Caves

Thursday, 15 April 2010

For years, adventurers and the devout have searched for evidence of the Eastern ideal of Shangri-La - a hidden paradise humans construct in their minds to escape earthly strife. But does it exist? Some intrepid explorers believe it does – somewhere in the remote, hidden landscapes of Nepal - and that it can be traced back to the beginnings of Buddhism, and even earlier.

Recently, a team of internationally renowned climbers and explorers joined forces with an archaeologist, anthropologist and an art historian to climb into history and uncover new secrets about Tibetan Buddhism and find the remnants of what may be Shangri-la deep in a remote, restricted region - a Himalayan jewel known as Mustang.

The team climbed into over a dozen cave systems that humans had not entered for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. What they found inside will rock the Himalayan world and re-write the history of this remote and mystical region. Ancient human remains were uncovered, confirming the team’s hypothesis that the extensive human-carved cave systems of Upper Mustang were carved up to around 3000 years ago.

Until the early 1990s, Upper Mustang was strictly forbidden to outsiders. Since the borders were opened, Dr. Mark Aldenderfer from the University of Arizona and members of this team have been trying to obtain the coveted permission from Nepal’s Department of Archaeology to climb into the caves for the first time, see what’s inside, and solve the mystery of why they’re there. What the team didn’t expect, was to find relics that were as valuable as uncovering an unknown Rembrandt, adorning the walls of these crumbling caves.

Travels With A Tangerine: Wanderlust

Thursday, 15 April 2010 New Series

The very British Tim Mackintosh-Smith, an Oxford University classicist who has called the Middle East his home for 25 years, takes us on a unique 75,000 mile journey through 40 countries in the 700-year-old footsteps of medieval explorer Ibn Battutah.

This is the story of one of the greatest journeys of all time. In 1325, shortly after the end of the Crusades, a young Moroccan Muslim called Ibn Battutah set out on a pilgrimage to Mecca. It was to become an odyssey from one end of the known world to the other. In all, he travelled 75,000 miles - more than three times the distance Marco Polo covered.

Along the way, he was to meet magicians, dervishes, holy men, fire-eaters and other travellers from across three continents. He was by turns scholar, businessman, mystic, warrior; he was imprisoned by mad sultans, was married ten times and had countless concubines. When he got home after 29 years on the road, he wrote it all down.

Today, the world is a very different place, and Tim explores the lives of 21st century Muslims around the world, and how their world intersects with the medieval legacy from Battutah’s time.

Battutah initially set-off from Tangiers, in modern-day Morocco to take the Hajj to Mecca. Little did he realise that this would kick start a 30-year journey across the world, taking in shipwrecks, black death, slavery, coups, pirates…

Tim Mackintosh-Smith has a personal connection with Ibn Battutah, editing a modern edition of his travels, and writing his own book, Travels With a Tangerine.

And in case you were wondering, the Tangerine is Battutah himself. Battutah was born in Tangiers, and residents of Tangiers are known as Tangerines. Battutah is the inspiration and guide for all of Tim’s travels. But where will the Tangerine take us?

Waking The Dead: Wren Boys

Friday, 16 April 2010 New Series

Carrey Mulligan (2010 Oscar nominee) guest stars in this story of the mysterious death of an unidentified teenage boy who drowned 16 years ago in a concrete pit. Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve) and his cold case team – including their new forensic scientist Dr Eve Lockhart (Tara Fitzgerald) - are taken deep into the culture and traditions of Irish travellers.

A lump of human ear found in the boy’s stomach matches the DNA of that of a comatose man brought to hospital after a fist fight, and Eve discovers they were brothers in an Irish traveller family, the McDonaghs. Meanwhile, DC Stella Goodman (Félicité Du Jeu) is attacked by a ferocious dog at a woodland shrine near the scene of the crime, where a mysterious nun who appears to have stigmata, warns her to leave.

Meanwhile, Boyd interviews Sean Killigan (Daragh O’Malley), who owned the construction site where Davy McDonagh was found, and Eve discovers traces of woad and the hallucinogen fly agaric in Davy’s skin. He also has a classic boxer’s injury meaning he also was blind when he went into the pit. Nearby they uncover a dumpsite and shrine land where pagan fighting took place.

The injured man, Joe McDonagh (Edward MacLiam), awakes to the shocking news that after all these years, his brother Davy is dead. He tells Boyd he makes a living bare-knuckle boxing, and thinks his opponent was paid to kill him. Meanwhile, DI Spencer (Wil Jordan) and DC Goodman find a former construction site security guard injured, and suspect he’s being targeted by the killer.

The mystery deepens when Dr. Grace Foley (Sue Johnston) discovers that Killigan’s young wife Esther (Olivia Caffrey) was Davy’s girlfriend when he was killed, and was pregnant at the time...

Art Nation

This week on Art Nation, Fenella Kernebone heads to Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art to look at a spectacular exhibition of hats from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, curated by legendary milliner Stephen Jones. Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones is wonderful, whimsical, wicked and downright wacky. The exhibition presents more than 250 hats and iconic headpieces from the V & A’s extensive collection and Jones’s own archive.

Singer and arts aficionado Robin Archer presents a special feature for Art Nation on the story of Wan Smolbag, a theatre company based in Vanuatu which has been in existence for the last 21 years. In the early days the company’s props fitted into just one small bag – hence the name ‘Wan Smolbag’. Well-known and highly respected in the Pacific, the it now produces plays, radio dramas and a TV soap opera covering contemporary social issues ranging from poverty to domestic violence and sexually transmitted diseases. The company is funded by the Australian Government’s overseas aid agency, AusAID, the New Zealand Government and other international donors.

Have you ever sat at your desk day dreaming about playing an instrument or perhaps becoming a painter or a dancer? This is the question posed in a new series of segments on Art Nation called My Secret Art Life which tap into people’s secret passions. The first segment deals with the story of Peter Chau, an eye surgeon, who with the encouragement of his daughter took up ballet four years ago – a life-changing decision.

To close the show American singer/songwriter and blues/folk guitarist Chris Smither performs in the Art Nation studio.

Did husband and wife team Ern (Nicholas Bell) and Jean (Tracey Harvey) sign up for something more sinister than just the art class? Ern does have a temper and is capable of flying off the handle, could he also be capable of murder?

Perhaps fellow classmate Duncan (Nick Farnell) with his healthy appetite for the ladies, also has an unhealthy appetite for murder? Or maybe the art teacher Bea (Heidi Arena) an ex-nun, was harbouring some not so holy intentions.

Please note: Due to earlier scheduling changes, episodes 6, 7 and 8 of Sleuth 101 will premiere on ABC2 at 6pm and then screen the following week on ABC1 at 6.30pm.

Talking Heads: Keith Payne

This week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson explores what drives extraordinary acts of bravery with his guest, Keith Payne.

Payne is a former army officer who belongs to an elite group. He is one of only two living Australians to have been awarded the Victoria Cross, Australia’s highest decoration for gallantry ‘in the face of the enemy’.

Vietnam, 1969, Payne’s Company was under attack. His men were isolated, surrounded on three sides. Payne himself was wounded in the hands and arms. But after organising his troops into a defensive perimeter, he went back alone, under enemy fire, and spent three hours searching for trapped and wounded soldiers.

He found 40 wounded men, brought some in himself, and organised the rescue of others.

Poh's Kitchen

Growing up, Poh ate whole fish with her family two or three times a week and loved it. Recently, she got to wondering why she didn’t cook them herself and decided to try, and discovered that it’s actually quite easy to cook a whole fish.

Most people know that the issue of how to manage our planet’s dwindling tuna stocks is really controversial. To find out more Poh heads off to Port Lincoln in South Australia, a small town which is having a big impact worldwide with its aquaculture innovations. Poh checks out a sea cage teeming with kingfish and is really looking forward to seeing some farmed tuna – until disaster strikes! Poh finds out she is not ‘at one with the sea’ as she comes down with a case of seasickness and misses a lot of the action. She is nevertheless thrilled to see firsthand some exciting developments which may help to protect fish stocks for future generations.

Ever curious, Poh wants to refine her fish cooking technique, so this week she’s invited one of Australia’s finest fish cooks, Neil Perry, into her kitchen. Neil was one of the chefs who helped to carve out the culinary style now known as ‘Modern Australian’ and there isn’t much he can’t tell you about how to catch, handle, and cook delicious fish.

In the kitchen Poh and Neil demonstrate that fish is an incredibly versatile ingredient as they prepare snapper in four different ways. Poh does a classic Chinese steamed fish and reveals a great trick for getting that ‘restaurant flavour,’ while Neil steams his snapper with chermoula, a delicious Moroccan marinade. Poh then dazzles Neil with an old family favourite, whole deep fried Szechuan fish with wood fungus, and Neil shares a simple delicious recipe for whole fried snapper with preserved lemon salsa.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, April 15 at 6:00pm

The New InventorsHosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors highlights the latest contemporary creations from the new generation of inventors, innovators and designers. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: designer and inventor Sally Dominguez, woodworker and teacher Richard Vaughan, and materials engineer Veena Sahajwalla. Inventions featured on the program:

SLINGSHOT – by inventor Brett White from NSW

We'd all like an alternative to fuel-guzzling cars, but electric cars can cost over $120,000, and most people aren't keen to ride a bike over long distances every day, rain or shine. So what if there was a way to combine the speed, power and comfort of a car, with the affordability and environmental sustainability of a bicycle? Brett White, from the Hunter Valley, has been building electric bicycles since 1991, constantly striving to transform electric bikes into a personal commuter vehicle. He originally began building a manual three-wheeled recumbent bike, but over the years his inventiveness took charge.

The Slingshot is a reliable, all-weather, lightweight electric vehicle, constructed from inexpensive electronic bike components. The design utilises unique construction techniques to produce a complex and original aerodynamic shape. The Slingshot is fully enclosed, so it can be used comfortably even if it's raining. With an energy usage of approximately 25wh/km, the vehicle is extremely efficient, achieving 5 times better economy than the Toyota Prius in electric mode, which uses approximately 125wh/km. And for all those wondering if an electric bicycle can ever challenge the speed of a traditional motor car, the Slingshot can achieve speeds of 85km per hour, and as James’s run-in with the studio set demonstrates, there’s more than enough power behind this invention.

GRANEX – by inventors Behdad Moghtaderi and Elham Doroodchi from NSW

Geothermal energy is often cited as a future source of electricity generation, yet there are barriers preventing this potential technology from becoming a reality. Within Australia, if we harness even 1% of our geothermal resources, we could supply the country with electricity for 26,000 years. Husband and wife inventing team, Professor Behdad Moghtaderi and Dr Elham Doroodchi, have developed technology that could be the key to unleashing the vast reserves of renewable energy that geothermal promises. Granex can deliver a 40% improvement in both thermal efficiency and power generation, increasing the amount of electricity that can be generated from low-grade heat sources such as geothermal.

EZY-LIFTER – by inventor Marc Pafumi from QLD

Lifting floorboards is backbreaking work and takes a long time. Most workers use a crowbar to lever each board off every floor joist. The job often requires several other tools too, including chisels, flat bars, hammers, roofing shovels, scrapers, nail pullers, shingle removers, staple pullers and wrecking bars. The Ezy-Lifter is a tool for the easy removal of floor boards. Its unique crocodile-mouth design creates leverage, allowing the worker to lift three boards in one pull, drastically reducing the amount of time required to finish the job.

Catalyst

School of Hard Knoncks

Former professional footballer and wrestler Chris Nowinski had to give up making a living from sport due to persistent headaches. In 2007 he set up the Sports Legacy Institute in association with Boston Medical School, and sent out a call for sportsmen to pledge their brains. Since then, the high incidence of pathology found amongst young ex-footballers has shocked the experts. One relatively young brain shows lesions similar to that of a brain more than 50 years older with Alzheimer’s!

Footballers of all codes indulge in a culture of heroism and take pride in their ability to take a few knocks on the chin, but when Jonica Newby visits Boston University in the U.S. she looks at research that is changing attitudes and the rules of contact sports.

Fab Fibre

It’s long been thought that our Western lifestyle has contributed to the rapid rise in the incidence of inflammatory diseases. But could this trend be turned around by boosting our consumption of just one food group? Researchers at the Garvan institute in Sydney have recently shown a link between dietary fibre and our immune system.

Dr. Maryanne Demasi finds out if more roughage in our diet could help control common diseases like asthma, allergies and arthritis.

Alex Veldman – Science in Profile

Dr Alex Veldman, a neonatologist at Monash Newborn in Melbourne, works tirelessly treating sick babies. Occasionally he comes across a rare case such as Baby Z. Acting with courage and determination, Dr Veldman overcame significant obstacles to save the infant girl from a fatal disease - previously thought to be untreatable. This remarkable story underpins Dr Veldman’s stellar career.

Animal Action - Chameleon Grasshopper

High in the alpine country of Kosciuszko in NSW lives the Chameleon Grasshopper. This diminutive creature turns blue when the temperature rises and in breeding season its behaviour really hots up. A PhD student recorded the male’s demonstrative ‘roaring’ antics – after beating off competitors the triumphant male flails his arms, opens his mouth wide and rears up while astride the female.

Available On iView From Midnight

Doctor Who – Episode 1: The Eleventh Hour

In a first for ABC TV, the new series of Doctor Who will launch on ABC iView – the ABC’s internet broadcasting service – two days prior to its broadcast on ABC1.

Less than two weeks after the first episode airs on the BBC in the UK, Australian viewers will be able to stream it on iView from midnight on Friday 16 April at abc.net.au/iview. The episode will then be shown on ABC1 on Sunday 18 April at 7.30pm.

The new series stars Matt Smith (Party Animals) as the 11th Doctor –introduced to viewers at the end of the recent two-part special ‘The End Of Time’ – and Karen Gillan as his companion Amy Pond. Bafta-winning writer Steven Moffat (Coupling, Jekyll) is replacing Russell T Davies as lead writer and executive producer.

The first three episodes have been confirmed as ‘The Eleventh Hour’ and ‘The Beast Below’ by Steven Moffat, and ‘Victory of the Daleks’ by Mark Gatiss.

Director of Television, Kim Dalton, said: “iView is a fantastic offering, an additional way for Australian audiences to watch ABC TV’s content – generally after, but in this special case before, its television broadcast.

“We hope the lure of Doctor Who – and what a fun and exciting lure it is – will provide incentive for more viewers to discover iView, and experience how convenient and easy-to-use it is.”

Doctor Who was ABC TV’s highest rating program on iView in April to December last year – with 378,000 views during that period. The next highest program was Four Corners, with 260,600 views. In February 2010, ABC iView recorded 411,000 visitors, its highest number of visitors to date.

INTERVIEWS WITH MATT SMITH, KAREN GILLAN AND STEVEN MOFFATT ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE UK.
